High Stakes ESPN Golf Match

$9million golf match between some of poker's superstars and Vince Van Patten. Each golfer is putting up a mill, with some interesting twists in the formats.

From DN's blog (ignore the dog/period stuff at the end)
http://fullcontactpoker.com/poker-journa...&ucat=&

I think it's also in Hellmuth's blog.

Saw this today, and the teams look pretty intriguing.

From DN's blog:

[ QUOTE ]
3 man scramble:
Daniel Negreanu, Josh Arieh, Erick Lindgren
Dewey Tomko, Doyle Brunson, ?
Phil Hellmuth, Russ Hamilton, Billy Walters

2 man best ball:
Daniel Negreanu, Erick Lindgren
Doyle Brunson, Dewy Tomko
Phil Hellmuth, Russ Hamilton
Vince Van Patten, Janet Jones
Phil Ivey, David Oppenhiem
David Grey, Huck Seed
John Hanson, Mickey Appleman
(I forget the last two pairings)

[/ QUOTE ]

The upfront money is $1M each for the scramble, and $100k each for the best ball. Given that and the players involved, the side action should be monumentally degenerate. GOGOGO!

So much for DN being cash busto.
As well as Arieh.

Is he any good at Poker?

Mickey Appleman was interviewed/profiled in Al Alvarez's masterpiece about the 1981 WSOP, "The Biggest Game in Town". He has four bracelets (first in 1980, most recent in 2003) and according to his Wikipedia page has won over $1.5M in tournament play alone.

Mickey Appleman's Wikipedia entry.

Mickey Appleman's Hendon Mob profile

So yeah, he's OK.

The third in that I'm guessing might be Hilbert 'Hillstreet' Shirey.

Super nice guy, super good poker player and golfer.

I don't even think he has to be good at poker, b/c he's one of the most successful sports bettors of all time. Search Cardplayer's archives for a good interview with him within the last year.

I've got a VIP pass for the event and will be blogging about it. If nothing else, I'll be posting at the end of each day.

Sweeeeeet.

If the ESPN producers are smart (who knows?), they'll follow the side action heavily. Let's hope so.

$1.5 million in 30 years is $50,000/year and thats before taxes AND before buy-ins. Live winnings never take into consideration the cost of buyins. He could very easily be a loser in tournaments.

I give this group a big edge. If you've read Rick Reilly's book "Who's Your Caddy" you'll know a match like this is right up Dewey's alley.

DN will be worried about trying to hit a 7 iron 142 yards and keep it fairly straight.

Dewey will be putting vaseline on the face of his 56 inch driver and knocking them dead straight each time.

This will make for some good viewing.

Re: High Stakes ESPN Golf Match

According to this :

http://www.pokernews.com/news/2007/8...f-venetian.htm

Dewey and Doyle's third player is Vince "laying the twigs over the trap" Van Patten, and yes Janet Jones is the same Janet Jones Gretzky who played the WSOP and, according to reports, made an awesomely bad river call with Jack high.

No Ram Vaswani and Marc Goodwin ... and I'm not joking because the scuttlebutt I heard during the WSOP was that they would be involved.

I once read that Raymond Floyd, who in his hayday was one of, if not THE best gambling golfers on tour, said that if he had to pick someone to put for any amt. of money (other than himself) he'd pick Dewey Tomko

Paging Blair Rodman. I can't remember his exact 2+2 name, but someone needs to PM him and have him come give some commentary on the pairings. I'm pretty sure he plays/has played golf with almost all of these guys.

Erick Lindgren and Daniel Negreanu—two-thirds of the "sucker" team—were getting their last practice drives in. There was a noticeable tension, not only in the air but also clearly written on their faces. I asked them how serious they were about their claims at being the “suckers.”

“Totally,” Daniel stated flatly. “I mean we’re playing with the most dishonest people in the world here.”
