experienced STAKERS i need your advice

wahts good, all...

i'm providing a $2000 stake to someone. I am also paying for (i think) their purchase of pokertracker and PAhud.

hoewver, i've never done a stake before, and am not sure what terms to offer about splitting his profit (which, btw, i'm sure will be a lot lol)

in general, do stakes last a certain amount of TIME, or is there a ceiling to how much he makes after which he goes off on his own? Is a basic guideline for him to be left with as much as I initially staked him - i.e. he makes $4000, i take 1/2 that + my initial stake.. so i come out ahead 2000 and he comes out ahead 2000?

Or should I say when he's +2000 he gives me 3000 and he's left with 1000? Or should I say when he's +10,000 he gives me 7000 and is left with 5? What if over the next 3 months he makes like 1k? should i be able to retract my stake and leave him with 500$?

ANy advice on appropriate staking guidelines would be great.

also, is a stake always 50/50? he probably won't ask for 60/40 or something... but is a 50/50 split standard?

The best advice I can give you is don't stake. ever. not even friends. You'd be surprised how much money you make doing this.

obviously what you do is, stake him the 2k, when he gets to 6k you take 3k, leave him 2k, and ship me the rest of the monies. DUH

k i guess right now ill do this, w/out shipping u the rest lol.

but wow, what a [censored] deal for someone being staked.. esp. since though im giving the guy 2k im starting him out playing 75% of his hands at 50NL and 25% at 100NL... it's gonna take him so much time & effort to make 4k, and then be left with 2k lol. sucks to be staked! there's a lesson for bankroll degens

this is bad advice. if you're smart about staking you can use it to make a good additional income with little effort. the problem is the majority of players don't really understand the deals they're involved in and get screwed that way. or they make deals with people they don't know well enough.

learn to understand the math involved with winrate/standard deviation/risk of ruin calculations. make sure you're getting a +EV deal. if they don't have a long track record, make conservative estimates. don't choose to make deals with "standard" terms because what should be "standard" varies so much from person to person and deal to deal.

I am currently staking 12 players (nearly 30 in the last two years) in online cash games with very good success. If you have any specific questions, send me an email. I'd rather not go into long discussion here, but I'd be happy to assist.

Re: experienced STAKERS i need your advice

I have staked nearly 30 players [in online cash games], losing with only two players for approximately $2,500. One cheated me and the other quit early. The winning players generated in excess of 100K in stakes btw. .50/1.00 and 2/4 NL (net, rake, bonuses). The backer should always act in his/her best interest, as the player is fortunate enough to have such an opportunity. Also, it is essential the backer play an integral role in the clients' play. I act as each client's poker coach. The hard work has certainly paid off. If only I could remember how to play myself.

i agree. staking smart people in low limit cash games is very low risk and depending on the deal you work out can be very profitable. its when people make staking deals for 50/100 NL not planning on losing 50k or agree to back someone for 10k tournaments without realizing people go 10 tournaments without cashing all the time that they get in trouble.
