Best Place to Live and Play

Everyone says Vegas is a bad place to live...so that has caused me to reconsider moving there. In everyones opinon, where is the best place to live and play:

Tunica, Biloxi, Vegas, AC, Foxwoods Area, LA, Phx, KC, Florida, Shreveport...any others...lets hear it.

Re: Best Place to Live and Play

being from ct i can only comment about foxwoods area. nothing to do at all, insane taxes in ct, expensive everything in ct. the games here are good though but i dont think its the best place to live, age dependent obv.

Vancouver. Many casinos in close driving distance. [censored] beutiful city, mountains, ocean you name it.

Re: Best Place to Live and Play

Depends on games and limits. I will say that the quality of life in MN is better than just about anywhere in the US (assuming of course that you can tolerate a bit of cold). The games at CP are about the best LIMIT games anywhere, but are capped at 30/60.

Need NL? Go somewhere else.
Need high limits? Go somewhere else.
Want a great quality of life and phenomenal LIMIT games to 30/60? Consider Minnesota. Better yet, stay the [censored] away, it's too damn cold here (and I have no need for a winning player to join in my very fishy game).

EDIT: If you are 30+ and have a family, don't even consider going anywhere else. If you are in your 20s and single, this may not be the best place to live.

Re: Best Place to Live and Play

I live 20 minutes outside of AC in an amazing neighborhood. It's very rural, neighbors are great. Shockingly, property taxes aren't as high in this neighborhood as others in NJ.

When I first moved to the area (I didn't move for poker), I lived two blocks from the beach in another good, safe neighborhood.

I personally love the area as their is always something to do. Wawas are the best and if you like sandwiches, subs are the best around here.

I'm originally a New Yorker, and while I miss it, this is definitely a great place to live.

Re: Best Place to Live and Play

If poker is to be your life, LA is expensive, but it is Mecca in terms of variety of games and player pool 24/7 every day of the year. But...

traffic blows
casinos are in crime ridden areas (just be careful)
cost of living is painful
public schools suck if you have kids - had to send mine to private school

and

weather is terrific
if you have the $ you can do anything
surf, ski, fish, all within a day's drive of LA

I'm born and raised in LA. Know my way around town and make a good living at something other than poker. Like the guy from MN said - what are you looking for from life OUTSIDE of poker? Hope the issues are bigger than the quality of sandwiches as suggested by another poster. LA has everything if you can afford it and can handle the frustrations of getting to it. If you aren't in the 50K and preferably 100K and up income clubs, stay away.

LOS ANGELES.

Top 2% of the hottest women in the world.
Biggest poker room in Country.
WAY more action. (this has been scientifically verified)
Vegas is 3.5 hours away.
Its almost always sunny.

I guess the cons are;
My house cost me 649k. Its less than 1200 sqft.
You need to make at least 100k a year to live.
Traffic is bad, butif you play poker alot, you wont even notice it. If you have a 9 to 5 job, yeah, traffic blows.

i was born and raised in NJ, and use to go to AC a few times week. I moved to LA 12 years ago, and just started playing a ton at the Commerce the past few years. I still play alot at the Bellagio and the Wynn, and I still feel like that action in LA dominates Vegas.

Wawa. I just dont understand why they dont want to expand. They could put every mini mart in America out of business in less than a week.

I grew in south jersey, and would probsbsaly committ suicide if I lived there again. Im joking, its not so bad. I still hang with my friends alot when I go back , and they are all about AC andthe Borgata, etc. Its way different scene than it was Iwhen I lived there.

Re: Best Place to Live and Play

North San Diego county or South Orange County. Better weather than LA; better schools. Lower crime. Less traffic. BUT: LA action easily accessed, and Vegas is only 4-5 hours away.

ANY place else: not enough action and worse weather. ANY place else.

Yes, Jersey has Wawa, and real diners, but SoCal has In-and-Out Burger and...everything else.

I'd say Tunica, MS would be a really great place to work and live.

Most likely though, you'd be living and working in Memphis, TN, as it's about 40 miles from Tunica.

if 3/5 NL can sustain you, (not a good place for even medium stakes limit).. Lake Tahoe hands down.

Agree with Mr.More --- northern San Diego or Southern Orange County. SoCal is the poker mecca, in my opinion, and you're an easy drive or quick flight to Vegas. Weather is unbeatable... cost of living and traffic are the only gripes I have...

Re: Best Place to Live and Play

Having grown up in Toms River, Im a huge fan of the Jersey shore. While the traffic can be nightmarish certain times of the week, its great living 45-50 minutes from AC poker.

Housing costs in the area arent tooo bad, the biggest problem I find is lack of jobs in the area. Unless you are in education, heathcare, a lawyer, or something shore related, or in retail, thats about it. Very few offices, companies are located in the area. But, if you can find work, its a great place to live, and very quiet in the winter.

I mean, I guess if you hate hot weather it is, but wasn't Vegas voted like one of the 10 best places in the country to raise a family a few years ago? When you get away from the Strip, it's actually a pretty conservative middle-class city.

IMO CA (LA or Bay Area) > Vegas > AC > CT farmland > Mississippi.

Ummmm a single male doesn't need to make 100k/yr to live in L.A. I don't know if OP is single or whatnot though. I mean if you're drinkin Dom P and eating at Mr. Chow's everyday and need a luxury vehicle then yeah I suppose you would have to make that much.

If you have a family of course it goes up, but if your wife isn't bringing in any income then yeah it would be tough to take care of her and raise kids. Even though L.A. is a high cost of living there are worse places.

I suppose that is really personality dependent... I can not imagine anyone thinking Tunica would be a great place to live. It is a little crappy town of like 2000 people in a not-very-attractive part of a not-very-attractive state, but that's my personal opinion. You should definitely explore it for a weekend before you make your choice.

I play $5-10nl, but could make a decent living at 3/5 as well. I've never been, but hear it's pretty amazing. How many games do they usually have running during the week/weekend and at how many different casinos? Is the cost of living pretty high in Lake Tahoe?

Do that again and we will lock "your" thread. Bumping is sooooo uncool. Change your user preferences to show 99 threads per page and you wont have to be worried about your threads leaving the main page.

PS: If you are playing mid to high limits the answer is LA.

BTW, I'm glad nobody has mentioned anything positive about Florida because there is no way you can play professionally here at the moment.

91106guy 08-03-2007 05:25 AM

Re: Best Place to Live and Play

I think if you are playing low to mid limits the answer is still LA. Just got back from another fun-filled wild night at the Commerce $40 NL tables, and Hollywood Park can match Commerce on many nights.

As for the lifestyle, OK, there's traffic, but really, this can be dealt with, and for poker purposes you won't be driving to the casino in too many rush hours anyway. And here's the upside:

- even you can't attract the top 2% of women, the dating pool in LA can match up with any city in the world. I'm no Brad Pitt but I've dated women and am about to marry a woman that I could only dream about meeting in my hometown of Sacramento, or San Francisco for that matter. Try trolling the personals at match.com or salon.com for LA women and see what I mean.

- whatever turns you on, you can find it in LA. If you're an artsy guy, live in Silver Lake or Highland Park. If you want to live the eternal frat lifestyle, live in Manhattan Beach. If you're a blue-collar guy, live in Long Beach or the Valley.

- more things to do than you possibly have time for.

- no established class system. you make something of yourself, you don't have to please or get the approval of any "old money" class like in Boston or SF.

Um, no. Vegas is a horrible place to raise a family. I grew up in the midwest and after living here a while and seeing how kids are raised here, there is ZERO chance of me raising a family here. Anyone who has their kid's interests before their own would do the same, IMO.
