What are your all time favorite announcers\' calls?

I'm sure this thread has been worked over a ton, but I haven't seen it in awhile, and I love to be reminded of the ones that have slipped out of my memory. Here are some personal favorites:

Musburger on the Flutie pass: "Flutie flushed...throws it down......caught by Boston College, I don't believe it!" Chills.

Vin Scully's Buckner call. Everyone knows this one start to finish, but the excerpt that always sticks out to me is his emphatic and somewhat surprised "behind the BAG...", as if he knew something weird was going to happen.

Bill Raftery's "Send it in, Jerome!" I want to say I saw this one live, but I'm not positive. Either way, it never loses its coolness.

Keith Jackson on the Kordell Stewart miracle vs. Michigan: "He's got THREE people down there..."

Musburger again, at the end of that Stanford-Arizona game a few years ago: "YES, YES, YES. Robinson at the buzzer!" Maybe the only time anybody has ever out-shouted Dick Vitale.

Thom Breneman's perfectly timed "The LATERAL!" on that amazing Boise State hitch-and-pitch play.

Orsillo's "and the Red Sox win on PATRIOTS DAY!" just as Mark Loretta was about to be mobbed at home plate.

I know Joe Buck doesn't get much love on this board, but two of his call stick out to me...

Ortiz into deep right field, back is Sheffield, we'll see you later tonight ('04 ALCS)

In the air to left field. Back, at the track, at the wall we are tied! (Leyritz '96 WS)

Favorite, I don't know, but here's two I want to contribute.

1. After Jay Haas' complete miss on the 18th tee of 1995 Ryder Cups singles at Oak Hill, Johnny Miller says, "Usually when you sky it, it goes straight." Still cracks me up. The pure genius and presence of mind there is remarkable.

2. A couple years ago I think it was Santiago catching for the SF Giants who takes a foul tip *obviously* right off his cup and doubles over. The broadcast cuts to commercial, and when they come back Krukow sets up the replay, "Okay. Let's see where this one gets him," (like he doesn't know) and they then proceed to run in it slow motion, and grunting a painful, "oh..." at they moment of impact. Krukow is the "color" guy, so apparently Kuiper was laughing to hard too pull this stunt because he didn't say a word and it would normally be to him to handle that on the broadcast.

when the color guy opens the segment out of commercial reading some promo-card for "Hat-night this Tuesday" or analyzing a replay or something it's often-times because the play-by-play guy left the booth to go to the mens room and hadn't made it back yet.
Or sometimes he wants to try to finish a hamburger between innings or something and the color-guy agrees ahead of time that he'll go ahead and take it out of the break.

Your hunch that perhaps he was laughing too hard to speak is possible too I guess. But there are other extremely realistic possibilities that could also explain it.

It was obvious what happened real-time, and then they run a slow motion shot of a foul tip to the cup out of commercial-- it was set-up. But you may be correct on why the color guy did it.

Some great ones have already been mentioned obviously - 'behind the BAG!'

My favorite is from Mike Miller's radio call of the Devils' first Stanley Cup - 'From Madison Square Garden, through the Lincoln Tunnel, to the Garden State - the New Jersey Devils have won the Stanley Cup!'

I love Miller. That one gets dredged up by KNBR it seems once a year or so. He can be very good. And even when he's at his most annoying I'm-so-funny-and-my-voice-is-awesome he's still kind of funny. Eg., paraphrase:

"We've now come to that part of our broadcast, the third inning, when it is time to turn the radio broadcast over to my broadcasting colleague and partner, David B "Flem" Flemming. So, without further ado, I'll hand it over. Take it away, Dave. It's all yours."

(And yeah bob, I know he's eating some air for a variety of reasons.)

all time favorite(because I was in attendance) is....Frazier heading, more numbers, more yards to those, oh look, they don't have him yet, look at Tommie Frazier, how many tackles can one man break.....Touchdown.

Another favorite is Lyle Bremser in 1971:

He's all the way home. Holy Moley, man, woman, and child, did that put him in the aisle. Johnny "the Jet" Rodgers just tore em loose from their shoes.

Re: What are your all time favorite announcers\' calls?

"Havlicek stole the ball" is my personal favorite.

honorable mention:

I don't know which announcer it was or even if it was TV or radio, but it was the call for Big Mac's 70th (actually, it might have even been Bonds 70th, but I don't think so), but the announcer just yelling "SEVENNNNDEEEEEEE!!!!!" was really cool. They'll occasionally play it in baseball highlight montages every once in a while. Anyone know who that was?

The worst I ever heard was Joe Castiglione's call of the Red Sox World Series victory in '04. After the final out it was like "The Red Sox are baseball's world champions" or something like that. It was said without any kind of excitement or enthusiasm, almost monotone.

I know it was like the worst, most anti-climactic World Series ever, but you're the long time voice of a baseball team that hadn't won the WS in 86 years. This is your moment, show some excitement for Christ's sake. Even just yelling "The Red Sox win the World Series!!!1!!!!" over and over again at the top of your lungs would have been better than that.

And, if you are the voice of a team for like 30 years and they haven't won the WS since 1918, don't you run through that moment over and over in your head for like many, many years crafting what you're going to say until it's perfect? Or, if not years in advance, then at least at the point at which they have a 3-0 lead and it's obvious they're going to win? I just don't get it...

If you listen to the games on the radio on WEEI, you can hear this call in their opening montage before every game.

I hope some Sox fans out there can jump in on this thread and confirm what I'm talking about...

The way Gene Hart goes from future, to present tense, to past tense in the span of 15 seconds (along with me being a huge Flyers/Hart fan) is probably my favorite call ever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-feMY5gi1M

Obviously, the do you believe in miracles call, Scully's call of Gibson's home run and the call of Bobby Thompsons shot that won the pennant all rank way up there too...along with Harry Kalas' call of Schmidts 500th.

Those are definite classics, but I was trying to restrict my personal memories to calls I heard live. I did hear the Michaels call as it was broadcast (I was 10 years old), but as great as it was and is, I already knew the result of the game (some moron had called our house thinking he was giving us some kind of scoop, and my Dad was foolish enough to tell me they won). Took a little luster off the moment at the time, but now I usually choke up when I hear it.

One that I forgot to mention is Verne Lundquist's call on Tiger's chip-in at the Masters. "In your LIFE..."

And I dare anyone to try to say it without the Johnny Most rasp. Most's call of Bird's steal and DJ's layup against the Pistons is also classic ("What a play by Bird").

And yeah, I was also kind of disappointed when I first heard Castiglione's call ("stabbed by Foulke, he has it, he underhands to first and the Boston Red Sox are the world champions") but he's just not the kind of announcer who excels at high drama. Ken Coleman used to be pretty good in those big spots.

Couple of good Rangers one's from '94. Howie Rose on the radio: "Matteau! Matteau! Matteau! Stephane Matteau! And the Rangers have one more hill to climb baby!"

But I liked Sam Rosen when they one the cup: "The waiting is over! The New York Rangers are Stanley Cup Champions! And this one will last a lifetime!"

Re: What are your all time favorite announcers\' calls?

Yeah, Castiglione's call when the Red Sox won the World Series was REALLY unspectacular.

I understand he's not that enthusiastic a lot of the time. But it seemed pretty obvious that he had already decided mostly on what he was going to say.
And to get to pre-plan such a major call and then come up with practically nothing is pretty bad. ALL of New England are absolutely losing their minds and everyone up there has chills as they are witnessing something they felt like they would NEVER get to see and would only get to keep dreaming about....something that their parents and grandparents never saw and only could imagine....
and Castiglione sounds like someone slipped him a couple sleeping pills.

His call didn't sound much more dramatic or meaningful than getting to say in the middle of June, "And that's the final out and the Red Sox win 7-2 to extend their longest win-streak of the year to 5 games."

That call was incredibly disappointing.

About McGwire's 70th HR....not interested in trying to find it right now but I'm pretty sure that poster is referring to Mike Shannon's call.
He actually sounds somewhat similar to Jack Buck but this one was Shannon.
Shannon can get pretty excited sometimes.

34TheTruth34 07-30-2007 03:54 AM

Re: What are your all time favorite announcers\' calls?

Pretty sure you were responding to my post and not the poster that you actually replied to, so I'll respond.

I'm glad someone agrees with me about Castiglione, it was just bad. Whenever I hear it at the start of a radio game, I just stare at the radio dumbfounded.

Thanks for the info, it probably was Dave Shannon. I'm too tired to look for it now, but I'll search later. Almost certain it wasn't Jack Buck.

Scully's call of this home run is much better, plus Hamilton had written out what he wanted to say and then didn't even read it right. Milo sucks and always has.
