Gay vs. Airplane debate
My girlfriend and I have just had a strange little argument. She made the comparison of "being disguisted / very turned off" by homosexual acts, and the prospect of participating in such acts, with being afraid to fly on airplanes. Basically, she says they are both irrational fears.
However, I think sexual orientation is the deciding factor here, and a certain "repulsion" for homosexual activities (assuming you're heterosexual of course, otherwise vice versa) is neither rational nor irrational (but rather standard nonetheless). I would posit that such tendancies of sexual orientation are non-rational, much like disliking a particular kind of food, or preferring the color red to the color blue. Let the jury decide: |

I am serious. And don't call me.... gay.

Re: Gay vs. Airplane debate
A fear of flying = phobia
A repulsion of homosexual activity = aversion One who creates a poll asking about the rationality/irrationality of an aversion = polltard |
Re: Gay vs. Airplane debate
This is all part of a plan to start pushing for a threesome with another dude. You must finish this argument quickly and decisively.

Re: Gay vs. Airplane debate
I thought this was going to be "would you rather take it up the butt or jump out of an airplane without a parachute?"
But um, obviously it's okay to think it's gross. Tell you're gf that she's even worse than you, because you know at some point she's said, "eww look at her, she's so fat, she should NOT be wearing that tank top." On second thought don't tell your gf that she's irrational. That never goes well. Just say, "you're right honey" and then reaffirm your straightness by bending her over a chair and plowing her. |

Re: Gay vs. Airplane debate
Not sure if this actually answers the question (because I imagine that being disgusted by [censored] acts has little to do with this). However, I think [censored] should be encouraged by straight people. If I was at a party with 5 girls and 4 guys and myself and all four of those guys are gay leaving me to be the only straight one, then I have increased chances with the women.
I think I should state that I have never been in such a situation (even living in California), but theoretically it is rational that gay people remove themselves from the competition for women which increase my success. For the record I think homosexuality among men is disgusting, and I find women so beautiful that I dont find female homosexuality disgusting. |
Re: Gay vs. Airplane debate
There was a study a couple years back which showed people who are homophobic act that way because they are uncomfortable with their own sexuality and are to one degree another gay.

Re: Gay vs. Airplane debate
Having likes one way and dislikes the other is a completely natural part of sexuality. And sexuality has no connection whatever to political correctness.
As I noted in another thread, I would no more expect straight dudes to think sucking dick isn't gross than I would expect lesbians to think it's not gross. I've talked to some gay dudes who think straight sex is kinda gross too. There's nothing blameworthy here. Having those preferences and those things you think are kinda gross is natural. Sometimes this PC stuff gets carried away beyond even the usual levels of getting carried away. |

Re: Gay vs. Airplane debate
I'm gonna say non-rational, but that's because an aversion is an emotional/physical reaction and not an intellectual one... it's sort of a blurry line but I'm pretty sure non-rational is the correct answer. I mean anything that occurs is "rational" in the sense that it can be explained in some sense, but there's no particularly compelling argument I've heard to justify being averse to X behavior between two other people that doesn't affect you at all. I find displays of affection between heterosexual people rather disturbing as well, but I don't have a spectacular explanation for it.

Poll results inconclusive. I still go with non-rational.

Re: Gay vs. Airplane debate
nice work everybody
|
Re: Gay vs. Airplane debate
I think your GF slightly missed the mark on this one. People who *hate* gays probably have some phobia tendencies and their fear could be an irrational emotional response. But finding the acts gross isn't really the same thing. I find the acts gross and I am not homophobic in the least.
