Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just run em
I've recently found myself witnessing several occurrences lately, in which cops ran red lights for one reason or another. Two nights ago, 11pmish coming back from the grocery store, I see a cop make an illegal left-turn on what was green on my side. I was the only car approaching and he had plenty of time to make the turn. He followed it up by using the forthcoming red light as a mere stop sign.
Just over a week ago, I was on my way to the gym around 5pm when I saw a cop put on his lights/siren and go around a semi-busy intersection. He then turns the lights off not half a mile down the road. Maybe he heard an emergency and someone else responded? Fine, my thoughts exactly. Until I see the SAME COP (I know b/c his plates said "Police") pull the same move 4 miles down the road. Busy intersection -> siren on -> clear sailing ->siren off. I whole-heartedly believe what is being done in both instances is completely unethical. Beyond ethics, is it a complete dick move, or does the Golden Rule apply? Am I being an anal loser for even caring about this or do I have a point that its complete and total [censored]? |

Am I being an anal loser for even caring about this [/ QUOTE ] yeah, pretty much...you gotta' pick your battles, i think we have bigger fish to fry Cops put their life on the line everyday to protect and serve, who cares if they use that power/authority to run red lights. |
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
What if I tell you the areas both ran were suburbia?
They probably do more serving than protecting in these areas. |
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just run em
Kinda like when they drive 15-20mph over the speed limit for no reason but will pull you over for the same thing!!
Your point is well taken. |
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just run em
Ok let's hate on them for blowing a read light for no apparent reason. Lets show them no respect at all.
Oh but wait... two masked men just ran into my work! "PLEASE HELP ME!!!! SOMEONE CALL 911!!! I NEED HELP!!!". Who cares if they blow a red light and speed once in awhile? Oh and when you said he put his lights and sirens on and then turned them off after the intersection, someone else did not respond. Lights and sirens is "Code 3". If you're in code three, than you gotta be there quick. So please stop bashing the police. I intend to become a Chicago Police Officer in the near future. KTHNXBYE. |
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
crabs,
if you're in "code 3" and "gotta be there quick" why don't you just leave at least the lights on, instead of only turning them on when you're near a busy intersection? fwiw, i believe that the chicago police abuse this more than any other police i've ever seen. |
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
When New Jersey governor Corzine was severely injured in a car crash, the State Police took a lot of flak for speeding and allowing him to ride without wearing a seat belt.
They enforce the law, they are not above it. And one way to make an ass out of those laws is to flout them. |
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
about 5 years ago, while i was living in a small college town in NJ, I was coming home from a gig. It was about 3 in the morning and i pulled up to the traffic liht where i turn to get to my apt. I was so tired and just as i get to the light it turns red. In my head i was thinking i should just go theres noone around. But then my paranoia said, the one time you do this there will be a cop there. So literally two seconds later this cop pulls riht around me no lights on and runs the light. It royally pissed me off so much, and the really annoyin thing is that if i would have followed him and run the light he would have insta pulled me over.

Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
1) Sometimes they don't leave the siren on full-time and just blare it at intersections because they are on their way to official duty, but its not like a bank roberry. Someone had their house broken into, someone was just mugged, etc. Bad examples, but there are times when they don't need to be flying down the road at 100 mph, but still need to get somewhere fast.
Of course, other times they just don't want to wait. But to the person that is saying who cares if they run a red light, they protect us: That is just dumb. Everytime they run a light, even with siren on, there is a risk. This is an acceptable risk if they are on their way somewhere important, but not if its just not wanting to wait at a light. Where are you going to draw the line on that? Who cares if they allow women off for speeding/drug buys/prostitution/petty theft and get a BJ in return? Who cares if they extort a little money from local businesses, THEY'RE PROTECTING THEM? Who cares if they rape some locals, they are fighting terrorism to keep America safe? oh sorry, wrong topic, same idea. |

Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
Speaking of Chicago PD, I once was stopped behind a cop at a red light at around midnight. He turned on his lights, ran the red, and immediately turned right into a Dunkin' Donuts, where there was another cop hanging out already. Definitely no crime going on as far as I could see as I drove past. So, I guess the stereotype is true.
BTW, Crabs, your kind of ethical flexibility is probably why the CPD is in so much trouble lately for all the abuses they've been caught for. (Numerous reports of assaulting civilians for no reason, which prompted the Police Chief to resign.) I'm not equating running a red light with beating people up, but it's a slippery slope. |
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just run em
For the record, [censored] cops, and [censored] you. Cops are the single most worthless form of public service out there. A)if someone breaks into your house, cops don't make it in time to save you.
Oh wait, what if someone breaks into your car? You call 911. Do they send a cop over? No they take a [censored] report over the phone. Cops don't prevent crime, all they do is show up and arrest people. All cops are nothing more then middle men in a terrible justice system. Ps-99% of them are unethical pricks. |

Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
When will people realize:
Cops are above the law. Have you ever heard of 'The Blue Wall"? It exists. If you're ever involved in any kind of incident with an off duty cop, you'll surely get an up-close-and-personal look at it first hand. Conversely, I like cops when I need them. Disclaimer: I hate it too. |
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
Performing a righteous citizen's arrest on a cop pulling this kind of [censored] is a (very, very far-fetched) lifelong fantasy of mine.
|
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
Anyone who says that this is a minor thing is totally off the mark and missing the point.
This is a microcosm of the reasoning for why so many people hate cops. There are many times when they seem to be upholding the law because it's their job - there's no sense of the greater good. Why do they think they are pulling people over for speeding and running lights? It SHOULD be because doing those things is [censored] dangerous. I'm not saying cops should be held up to an incredibly high standard, but we're talking about them willfully disregarding laws designed to protect people just because they can. |
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
As an example:
Let's say a cop is doing this stupid move of flicking on lights and going thru a crowded intersection. Let's say next that he causes a HUGE accident doing this and let's further say that the accident was his fault 100%. The reality is, when this gets investigated, The Blue Wall goes up, cops in the station cover for him and say he was responding to something and he will never, ever be charged with any kind of recklessness. Often times, the person he hit will be charged with not heeding to a police vehicle or some stupid [censored] and he'll be cited instead of the meathead cop. Witnesses don't matter. The Blue Wall is what matters. It makes me kind of sick, but I also realize that most cops are meatheads to some extent and you just have to accept that. [censored] with cops is futile at best, unhealthy at worst. |
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
Crass generalizations are cool if they're about cops.
|
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
So we are supposed to be greatful that a cop does their job?
I do my job pretty well...does that mean I can break the law as well? |
Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
I'm not defending, I'm just crassly generalizing...

Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
Admit it guys. If you could do it, you would. What's the point of sitting in traffic when you know all you have to do is hit the lights and go. Maybe they do need to be somewhere but they do not need their lights and siren on all the time. You're not a cop, you don't know what's going on.

Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
Here is my problem with a cop running a red light: it erodes (even if its just a little bit) the already frayed trust people have that the "police are on our side". Every time you see the cops speed, run lights when they are clearly just trying to avoid sitting at a light, harrass people who are just trying to live their life, etc. it strains my belief that they are there to serve the community and instead strengthens my fear that they are out for themselves. Illegality aside, they are foolish for taking this short cut.

Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
Yea, it's kinda dickish, but if they're on the clock (cops are salaried, no?), then it's probably better for them to do some work rather than sit in traffic for 45 minutes.
I'm talking about rush hour type traffic. Sitting in a parking lot on the beltway kind of traffic. By all means, run your lights, drive up the shoulder, get to where you need to go. I would do it myself if I were a cop. If it's a regular light and you can't wait 4 minutes for a light, then F you, copper. I really don't care though. I'm in traffic whether they do it or not. I'm pretty sure the number of accidents caused by police running through a light is negligible. Actually, I'm not sure at all. I have no clue. The length of this post is already way out of proportion to my interest in this subject. |

Re: Cops who turn thier siren on to avoid congested lights -or just ru
i just want to voice (or write rather) my support for anacardo, the op, and all the other posters who see cops misusing their power as wrong.
i am amazed at how people can justify bad behavior some of the time in exchange for good behavior some of the time from individuals whose primary duty is to make sure people are well behaved, law abiding citizens. the "thank your public servants" BS is such fallacy. they are compensated just like any other job in america, in fact they receive extra compensation they otherwise would not if their jobs were less risky. they aren't sacrificing themselves, they aren't doing anything altruistic. if you appreciate their good work, then obviously you should thank them of course. its certainly not they case that these individuals should be admired strictly because of the occupation they hold regardless of the quality of their work. |
