Why are we playing poker?

Deep down, why are you playing poker on the most basic level?

To win money.

At least you will do best if that is you only goal. Obviously there is more to it.

The book The Psychology of Poker explores this topic in great detail. If you really want to study the topic, then you should read the book. It's pretty good.

But I also suspect that there is some kind of Pavlovian conditioning going on with the winning and losing of pots and the chemical brain reactions to those wins and losses.

Re: Why are we playing poker?

I enjoy how its never the same scenario everytime I play.. It kills a lot of time when I got nothing else better to do.. There's that chance to maybe hit a big pay day if you take down a big tournament.. You get to meet new people since there's always different people you play with.. Oh and did I mention you can make money doing it?? =D

addicts play to replace the feeling they get when they lose. theyre not looking to win or think they can win, they just dont want to feel like "almost puking"

If money wasn't involved I would never play a single hand of poker in my life. If consistently winning money wasn't involved I wouldn't have played it very long.

So yeah, to win money. tbh I would rather be doing a lot of other things besides play poker every day.

$, plus maybe cause I get satisfaction out of beating people.

But I would never play poker for fun unless I was with people I'd have a real good time with. Poker sucks

Right now for the quick cash.

When I started out I wasn't really interested in the money though, I just thought it was a cool game. Especially the 'simple rules <-> deep, advanced strategy' part intrigued me.

People that say they are bored with Poker and don`t think it`s much of a game and they play it just because there is an opportunity to win money should seriously consider spending their time on something else.
Because this is not different then working at McDonald`s doing some boring shiat just to pay your bills.
McDonald`s job however is a guaranteed +EV and the risk of ruin is 0%.
Compare that to the uncertainty of Poker and it doesn`t take a genius to realize that flipping burgers is a much better option for this type of people.

I play poker because it`s the only game that challenges you at so many different fields and levels and the opportunity to make a living from it makes it perfect.
Think about everything you have to master in order to become a great poker player:
Math, probability, statistics, economy, finance, analysis, psychology, logic, observation, discipline, Anger/Tilt management are just a few of the many things you need to be good at.
Not to mention that above average IQ is a must in order to have some kind of edge.

Needless to say a massive motivation and determination is needed on top of being a "natural".

I`m sorry to say but the undisputed and well known fact is that a guy who is bored when he plays poker stands no chance in a long run. [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

Just don`t forget to come back in this thread to tell us when you bust again because thats inevitable and my guess is it will happen very soon, basically when your luck runs out.
Thats a read based on your short post only.

Re: Why are we playing poker?

Started off because friends played and I loved gambling...

Then I began to love the strategy/psychology/math about it...

Then I played online a lot...

Then I was hooked...

But really, it all started with TV and I think that's DEEP DOWN why most ppl got into it...The glamorous nature of it really attracted me to it the more I think about it.
