Best SNL music performance of all-time
How ya'll like that?
It's a great song, but flav just goes off. Other nominations off the top of my head are Elvis Costello, The Specials, Nirvana and The Pogues. Others? Tuco. |
Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
Sinead O'Connor ripping that pic of the pope. Probably doesn't qualify as 'best' but certainly is up there as momorable.
The Replacements were pretty awesome too. Patti Smith doing Gloria is way way up there. Great great performance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mIsN2JHPds |
Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
a couple not so well ones that blew me away back when I first saw them. I'm pretty sure both of these were SNL:
Adam Ant performing Strip Dream Academy doing Life in a Northern Town |
Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
Prince was sick when he was on a couple years ago, I'll try to find a video.

Isn't this a little like being the world's tallest midget?

Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
I am no fan of his and the song was pretty blasphemous, but for some reason when I saw P Diddy perform "Come With Me" from the Godzilla soundtrack with Jimmy Page on the guitar and a full orchestra behind them, I was pretty impressed. It was quite intense, but I'm a sucker for a symphonic backing.
If anyone could find a video of that performance, I'd be grateful... I've searched for it a bunch and have never found it. Idioteque from Radiohead was also outstanding, but that song kicks ass live no matter where it is performed. Edit: Ahhh... someone recently added the P Diddy performance to YouTube... here ya go. I realize it wasn't necessarily a full orchestra either, but whatever. The strings still sound pretty good. "Come With Me" featuring Jimmy Page from SNL |

Isn't this a little like being the world's tallest midget? [/ QUOTE ] Huh? I can't think of a major music act in the past 20 years that hasn't appeared on SNL. |

Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
Damnit Patton, you edited your post just when I made mine. Are you still grateful?
I like how at the end Diddy does the "we're not worthy" bow to Jimmy, at least he knows the legend that is Jimmy Page. |
Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
Couldn't find a video of it in my 5 seconds of searching, but one of my favorite performances was Pearl Jam - Daughter.
|
Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
Beastie Boys doing Three MCs and One DJ leading into Intergalactic (as impressive as this was, though, they did the same setup on MTV awards that year even better)
Also, Vanilla Ice doing Ice Ice Baby, obv |
Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
I also loved the "Come With Me" performance.

Rage Against the Machine doing Bulls on Parade, and then being told to leave. Awesome-ness.

It's my dick in a box [/ QUOTE ] A solid contender. I've given serious thought to commencing my wedding vows with "Girl, you know we've been together such a long, long time, and now I'm ready to lay it on the line . . . " EDIT: Clearly I will need to get my best man to bust out with the falsetto "WELLLLLLLLLLLLL" at that point. |
Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
Faith No More - "Epic" FTW
|
Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
Blind Melon's No Rain with Chris Farley in the bee costume.

Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
Steve Martin doing "King Tut" (sorry, couldn't find video)

They did Sabotage later that same show. Trust me. |
Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
Pearl Jam's Alive/Porch performances have always stood out to me.
Beck had a great performance this past season where his band stood around a kitchen table using various utensils for a crazy percussion jam. |
Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
Captain Beefheart was always great for a big WTF? I'm not sure whether they actually stopped the song or the mics were shut off.

Maybe not the best of all time, but the old man still had it at this point.

Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
Elvis Costello was the first that came to mind, but the Ornette Coleman stuff is sick.
Elvis got kicked off the show forever for that, but they brought him back for the 25th anniversary: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XDNDqYl65sU . Did the same shtick with the Beastie Boys. It'd be better if Mike D didn't look completely bored the whole time. |

Becks first performance of "Where it's at" was awesome.
So was Kid Rock's performance of "American Bad-ass" |

Re: Best SNL music performance of all-time
i think the coolest performance was elvis costello being on their anniversary show, after being banned for a number of years, for performaing radio radio.
the beastie boys were on stage, and started playing, then elvis costellor runs out on stage, and stops them, then then bust into radio radio. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDNDqYl65sU |

That's good stuff. EDIT: Also, the Ornette Coleman link, at least for the first couple of minutes, sounds like it would be badass chase music. |
