People collect casino chips wtf?
Just found some sites to do with collecting casino chips. When I was younger I collected all kinds of stuff - stamps, coins, football stickers, Garbage Pail Kids - so I do really understand the satisfaction of tracking stuff down, building a collection, cataloguing it. But this could be an expensive hobby! Still, I can see how being a trader could be profitable:
1 Buy chip for $5 2 Sell chip to collector for $7.50 3 ??? 4 Profit http://www.marlowcasinochips.com/las...o/Bellagio.htm http://www.callzia.com/dghome/acchips/ac.htm |

Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
I guess it's the same as collecting stamps which could still be used for purpose. BUT a stamp is more likely to be worth more to a collector than its face value than a casino chip would be.

By the way mods, do move this thread if it should be in B+M.

A retarded railbird
|
Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
yeah I normally take a small denomination chip or two from most places I visit

Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
It's huge business. The true collectors look after chips from casinos that are no longer in business. Also, lots of casinos issue limited edition chips like the Palms and the Flamingo.
I also understand that most chip collectors are not gamblers at heart. It's another collectable just like coins or stamps. |
Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
Look how much the chips from the WSOP are going for. A T25 and T100 just went for about $100 each, a T5,000 chip looks like it'll fetch $200.
No cash value indeed. |
Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
Oh yeah, collecting tourney chips is common practice, even amoungst the pros. Apparently Men The Master has "collected" thousands!

Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
Well Jim collecting the chips is probably a lot cheaper than having a gambling addiction, losing the chips, going on monkey tilt then losing even more.
Plus, they can cash in the chips at a later date. No offense Jim, I like you. But it is amusing that you'd find it so amazing when you've lost so much gambling. |
Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
99% of my poker playing has been online, so I think in terms of numbers, my table and account balance, rather than a physical chip stack. I have sat in a live PLO game on precisely two occasions; I did first get into poker through a friend's home game, and after that played the £25-£50 buy-in hold'em games at a poker club, but that was a long time ago. So I'm not too familiar with chips - although from the times I have played live, I understand that some of the fun of the game is having an increasing stack in front of you and fiddling around with them!

Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
I collect $1 chips from every casino I step foot in. I spent the better part of a day walking the entire strip in Vegas just to walk into every casino to check them all out. It sounds stupid to a lot of folks, but most hobby's are kinda dumb if you think about it. Started at Mandalay Bay and walked all the way down to Circus, Circus, then crossed the street and came back. I felt it the next day.
I have a display case that I mount them in that hangs on the wall next to my computer. It makes a great conversation piece. I bought the frame here: Chip Displays I don't collect the special edition chips or chips from casinos that I haven't been to...just the ones i visit. |

Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
Yeah, the chips make great souveniers. I always keep a $5 chip or $2 or $3 chip from every poker room I visit, then I throw them in my suitcase. Sometimes at the end of the trip, the craps table made me go busto, but I have like 20 chips in my suitcase.

I guess it's the same as collecting stamps which could still be used for purpose. BUT a stamp is more likely to be worth more to a collector than its face value than a casino chip would be. [/ QUOTE ] Collecting things, IMO, shouldn't really be all about the money, although for alot of people that is what it is about. Some people collect salt shakers that look like chickens...just because they might not be worth alot in the future doesn't make it a bad hobby. I collect $1 chips from every poker room I play in and my buddies bring me a $1 chip when they play in a room somewhere that I haven't. I do the same for them. Pretty neat to look at all the different $1 chips. And it has nothing to do with hoping the chips value is ever more than $1. |

[/ QUOTE ] Exactly...It's not about the money for me either - that's probably why I only get $1 chips. Hobby's for me are about having fun, not too worried about the money. It will be Kinda neat though to see what my Stardust chip is worth someday since they leveled the place. Definitely a neat chip to have. |
Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
i just like chips in general. i post on chiptalk.net sometimes. I only really take chips I like. For example, i took a bay101 chip because i think Bud Jones makes sick chips. On the other hand, i think Paulsons are just retardedly overrated and am kinda meh on them as they are EVERYWHERE. I have a replica set of the 2006 wsop chips and we use them in my homegame and everyone always comments on how awesome they are. best wsop chip ever imo.

Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
I collect a $1 chip from every casino I play in. I was thinking displaying them on a map of the US (magnetically) to show where I've played across the country.

Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
Cool idea Eponymous.
Kevbo, I know a guy who collects Matchbox cars. Whenever a new car comes out, he runs out and buys it. Sounds reasonable enough. However, since he thinks (knows?) these cars will be worth more in 30 years in the original packages, he never opens them. Sooo, this guy has hundreds and hundreds of Matchbox cars but he can't mess around with them or even display them because "that might decrease their future value". It's his money and his hobby, so he can do what he wants, but how much fun is that? "Awesome! I got another Matchbox car today! I better run and put it in my dark cool closet and lock it away so it will be worth money one day."lol Besides....if you're collecting something like that just for the investment potential....it's probably a really bad bet. |

Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
I grab chips from everyplace I've played, my sister gave me the idea of making them into magnets for the fridge (see pic)
IMO collecting poker chips is not really a for-profit endeavor - I like 'em because they remind me of the specific trip or whatever http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/6...oto0038fl6.jpg and yes that's a T5 tournament chip from Commerce, sue me |

Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
Like many of you, I like to collect a $1 chip from every casino I've gambled at. I'm afraid to see how many chips I do have! That said, collecting chips is a big business. Just browse eBay and see for yourself. I have a friend who has a passion for collecting rare, high-quality chips. Believe it or not, there actually is a price guide for them! |
Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
I only have a few, but I like my 25 cent chip from Greektown Casino. It's dayglo orange and was the last chip I had remaining the night I played there.

Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
I snag one from each place I play, but I havent done anything with them aside from make a pile thus far. Maybe down the line i'll do something cool with them, or give them to my progeny or something.
|
Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
did i read that someone snagged/stole a wsop tourney chip, and sold it? I missed that. Is it worth grabbing a 25T chip to sell from the 2007 WSOP? Was this sold on ebay?

Re: People collect casino chips wtf?
"People collect casino chips wtf?"
I can think of at least one reason to be a collector of casino chips: MONEY Worth slightly more than face value One more You can find plenty of these auctions every week apparently. I think there is a record of well above six figures being paid for an old obsolete (obv rare) chip from Vegas. |
