Have to pick a University for a year in America
I currently study at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany and am applying for a program that would send me to a university in North America for a year.
They gave me a list of possible schools and I have to make a priority list of 3-4. The problem is I know nothing about the schools yet. It will significantly lower my chance of getting into the program if I pick top schools so I'm aiming for something mediocre to good. I study Business Engineering (meaning business AND engineering departments are of interest to me) and would be enrolled in the graduate program of which ever university I end up with. I'd really appreciate it if people could give me any information about the universities ("this school sucks", "this one has a great faculty but the parties suck" "you need to be extremely good to be accepted to this one"). Obviously this shouldn't be any work for you but I'm sure some of you know stuff about one or the other. CLIFFSNOTES: Please rate (some of) these Universities (graduate business/engineering) Here's the list: Connecticut- USA CCSU Central Connecticut State University ECSU Eastern Connecticut State University SCSU Southern Connecticut State University UofC University of Connecticut Hartford University of Hartford WCSU Western Connecticut State University Massachusetts-USA Amherst University of Massachusetts Boston University of Massachusetts Dartmouth University of Massachusetts North Carolina-USA Appalachian State University ECU East Carolina University Elizabeth City State University FSU Fayetteville State University NCSU North Carolina State University NCAT North Carolina A & T State University NCCU North Carolina Central University NCSA North Carolina School of the Arts Pembroke State University ChapelHill University of North Carolina Charlotte University of North Carolina Greensboro University of North Carolina Wilmington University of North Carolin WCU Western Carolina University Winston-Salem State University Oregon- USA EOSU Eastern Oregon State University OIT Oregon Institute of Technology PSU Portland State University SOSU Southern Oregon State University UofO University of Oregon WOSU Western Oregon State University Ontario- Canada Brock University Carleton University Lakehead University Laurentian University Mc Master University Nipissing University OISE Ontario Institute of Studies in Education Queens University Ryerson University Trent University University of Guelph University of Ottawa University of Toronto University of Waterloo UofWO University of Western Ontario University of Windsor WLU Wilfried Laurier University York University |
Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
back when i was applying, i was looking into business schools and i remember ChapelHill University of North Carolina being 4-5.
|
Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
UNC-CHapel Hill or BU.
Or go to Central Connecticut and get lots of dumb girls to bang you. |
Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
I would say North Carolina - Chapel Hill, Boston University as a good top two, with North Carolina State and something like University of Connecticut as "safety" type schools. UConn is in the middle of nowhere. If you want to go Canada University of Toronto is a great school (prob UNC-CH/BU level for business, not sure about engineering).

talk.collegeconfidential.com has good information, although the forum is filled with a bunch of overachieving nerdy types.

Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
Alright, thanks for the info. I definately would have gotten UMass Boston confused with BU and so on...
Picking from this list kinda sucks. I think I'm going to Canada or something... |
Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
University of Toronto is by far the best one listed. Queens University is good too.

UNC-Chapel Hill is a bastion of college sports, smoking hot coeds, and warm weather. or Canada??!?! |
Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
Yeah, lol. If you want girls and sports, definitely do NOT go to University of Toronto. If you want the best academic school on the list, then yeah, go there.

Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
Boston University of Mass isn't UMASS.

Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
ECU has a new "general" Engineering program that I honestly doubt is very good, because it's so new. I'm not sure about their Business school, but their programs for teaching and their medical school are excellent. It's a decent school overall.
NC State is supposed to have a very good Engineering program (I'm going to be transferring them myself next year for AE/ME). I'm sure their business school is at least average. |
Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
Chapel Hill UNC is one of the best schools in the country, in a place with great weather... DO IT
|
Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
If these are your choices, this looks like an absolute slam dunk for UNC.
|
Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
I go to NC State and it is a great school with a great engineering program, and a nice and up and coming business school. UNC is our rival so naturally I would not recommend them but they do have a good business school, but not engineering b/c they are mostly liberal arts type. At NCSU the engineering school is in the process of transferring most of its classes to our new Cintennial campus which is aimed toward research.
So if you care more about the science then go to NCSU (or VA tech) and if you care about the business school I would recomend UNC. Also I live right next to ECU and have friends who have gone through ECU's business program and done well and they are known for being a big party school so that is another choice. Basically choosing a school in North Carolina is not a bad choice. Great education, great weather, and great athletic conferences. |
Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
Thanks again for all the information. I was yesterday informed that getting into the Canada and North Carolina programs is going to be very difficult. Since I can apply for 4 different schools (and therefore 4 different programs(=states)) I will obviously still try. I haven't even looked at actual classes that I'd want to take but unless something unexpected happens in that regard my list will look like this:
1. UNC Chapel Hill 2. U of Toronto 3. University of Connecticut 4. UMASS Boston I am extremely excited to get to live in "Storrs, CT, USA"! On a sidenote, I might (as in I consider myself an 8 to 1 favorite) get to go to Singapore Management University for at least one semester starting in january which would obviously own hard. I'm getting all the oral sex out of my system while I can. Edit: Another thing I just thought about: I am exempt from tuition at all of those schools. I wish I was commited enough to check which one is the most expensive... |
Re: Have to pick a University for a year in America
i only skimmed this thread... but
"I am extremely excited to get to live in "Storrs, CT, USA"!" is hilarious |
