Still think it\'s an internet conspiracy by the Paul campaign?
Ron Paul leads all republican candidates with financial support from military personnel at 53%:
http://thespinfactor.com/thetruth/20...can-candidates Numbers are for the July quarterly report of donations exceeding $200 (where listing one's employer is required). |

Re: Still think it\'s an internet conspiracy by the Paul campaign?
I really hope Paul runs as an independent after he doesn't get the nomination. We desperately need to hear the things he has to say about foreign policy. I think his domestic economic views are crackpot, but we really need his input on imperialism, ESPECIALLY since he's being listened to by the folks carrying the military burden of empire.

If you like his views on foreign policy, you should be a little less dismissive and consider the overall ideology that those allows for those clear and honest views. |
Re: Still think it\'s an internet conspiracy by the Paul campaign?
Someone want to explain the numbers for me? Paul got 24,000 dollars from military in Q2? That seems pretty underwhelming, I guess they aren't big givers to politicians.
At first I thought it was 24,000 gave 200 dollars or more, but that would mean well in excess of 4.8 million and obviously wrong as well. |
Re: Still think it\'s an internet conspiracy by the Paul campaign?
Looks like Mr. Paul also got $500 from someone who works for Halibiurton....
http://query.nictusa.com/pres/2007/Q...C00432914.html whereas Guliani got $0 from Haliburton employees!? http://query.nictusa.com/pres/2007/Q...C00430512.html Thats an evil ratio of 500:0, which is equal to "err: divide by 0" according to my TI-83 calculator. ruh roh |

[/ QUOTE ] I'm guessing there is some sort of explanation why this is less incredible than it first appears. Maybe the vast majority of military money is raised in Q1, but Paul's message at the debates inspired some anti-Iraq military folk to give, or something like that. I really have no idea, but this certainly isn't bad news for him. |
Re: Still think it\'s an internet conspiracy by the Paul campaign?
I don't think this is that surprising... basically every other candidate is saying "sup guys, I'm gonna to continue sending you to go kill people and get killed for no reason / oil". I think most of the people in the military understand how important defence is... and how destructive offense is.

Re: Still think it\'s an internet conspiracy by the Paul campaign?
You people are assuming that just because someone lists their employer as "U.S. Army", they are IN the U.S. Army. There are lots of civilian employees of the Army as well, and in fact when I was a civilian employee of the Army, I would list my employer as U.S. Army. That didn't make me a member of the military, except by certain people who didn't understand the difference.

Re: Still think it\'s an internet conspiracy by the Paul campaign?
I can't believe that anybody is making any sort of broad conclusions based on this. First, it is 1 quarter. Second, the monetary value is very insignificant (.8% of Paul's total contributions for the same time period.)
One of the only safe conclusions to reach here is that military employees didn't give a whole lot to Republicans in the second quarter. |

The total dollars are going to be higher since these numbers are from those who gave >$200 and recorded their military branch. |

I think that all he is trying to do is give another piece of evidence that Paul is not just some fringe figure who only appeals to libertarian college kid message board posters. This evidence is only postworthy because MSM chooses to totally ignore it, when in reality there is stuff like this everywhere. |

Look at Brownback's numbers --- if it was only people who gave more than $200 how does he show $71? Also, assume that it is those who only gave $200 or more. Are you suggesting that it is somehow newsworthy that he got 120 military employees to give $200 or more to his campaign (and that's rounding up.) This is just complete non-news. |
Re: Still think it\'s an internet conspiracy by the Paul campaign?
I would say it's newsworthy when a peace candidate receives more contributions from the military than any of the other war candidates; since the military is as a general rule pro war.

[/ QUOTE ] What it looks like is that donations over 200$ are required to have the occupation listed, and under its optional. So these are donations where the occupation is listed which should include all over 200$ and some under as well. As far as it being a non issue, its another indicator that ron paul has support from those who are actively involved in politics. People who donate are much more likely to vote than those people randomly called in polls. Its nothing that would cause me to put money down on Ron Paul though. |
