Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
Casino AZ is running satellites into the "State Championship" tournament (Aug 18). Satellites are $110, tournament is $1050 (two days, Sat/Sun), and if you know anything about single table tournaments, they are very soft.
[ QUOTE ] "You called my all-in with J3"? Yes, sir, I did since I was getting over 2-1, and I've raised your blinds six times in a row so you might be taking a shot at me, and as evidenced by your nine high, you were. [/ QUOTE ] |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
Do they go all day? If not when, and do they fill up quickly?
|
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
On Saturday they were running two at once. Thursday afternoon they were back to back. Sunday it seemed one every couple hours.

Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
Oh, and you can't get cash, only the tourney entry, which you can resell. Last years tournament was $500 entry and since it's limited to 450 entries supposedly seats were selling at a premium just beforehand. I don't know if it will happen this year due to the doubling of the fee, and the floor warned that they wouldn't tolerate people reselling seats at over face value. This year first prize is a guaranteed $250,000.
The single tables start with 1500 chips, 25/50 so it's only a couple levels before it's push/fold. I won on the fourth try and I made huge mistakes in two of those sats to get knocked out. People played way too passive once the blinds get big, I was warned several times that "I guarantee I'm calling you next time" if I kept stealing, so I kept stealing and they kept foldin. |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
I was told if you win multiple entries you could be paid cash, true or not true?
|
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
I am 0 for 1, and need to play a few more. But I am running so hot, I don't want to waste time playing in a satty. But I also don't want to pony up the 10.5 bills.
And I would be reasonably surprised if this tourney doesn't get chopped at the FT with 1st and 2nd taking 75% of the prizepool. |

There is a regular named Ray who's won at least 5 of them and he told me he was just selling them to high limit players. I don't know any high limit players other than Howard Beale and he's such a nit he doesn't play tournies:) |

You're the tourney guy, certainly not me! Just because of this I now have to throw away $110 and give one a shot. I used to do semi-ok at the $33 sng's but that included payouts for 3rd. This is all or nothing and in my case more likely nothing. |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
I'm 1 for 1. Missed the tourny on Wed night and won the Sat instead. I have to say that was one of the softests Sat's I have ever played in my life. It was far softer than a $10 Stars SNG. There were several 3/6 players, a couple 5/150 players, one guy who knew what he was doing and a coupld of clueless guys I had never seen before. It was the worst SNG I've ever seen. Typical hand went like this - open limp, call, call, call - raise 6x - fold, fold, fold, fold. We got to 4 handed at 150/300 and one lady folded from 2200ish to 100 without playing a hand. Yes, she folded her 300 BB to a raise with 100 behind.
If you can sell extra seats it's definitely way +EV compared to the Tues/Wed DonkFest. |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
For $110 this sounds like a worthwhile trip to the CAZ

Howard and I once had a conversation about how bad be both are at tournaments. |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
So what did you guys tip after you won your seat? I tipped $30. I actually asked the dealer when there were 5 left what he would want and he said $30.
|
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
Hmm, I didn't even think about trying to satellite into this thing. Only satellites I've played at a casino were at the Bike during the Legends of Poker last year and I ended up donking off some cash during those. Oh well, too late for me, I already bought my seat for this one.

My satellite went two hours (partly because of problems with the shuffler, but mainly because of people folding). So I'm thinking I should tip $50 ($25 per hour). But after I won I was in a hurry to leave, but only had $100s in my wallet, and it didn't occur to me to go to the cage and get change so I just gave her $100. The floor saw this and I had to tip him $25 so I didn't look like a tool. The dealer was very grateful, esp. because she felt really bad she had flipped up an ace to me on this hand. Seven left, I'm chip leader. Agro guy raises my SB in an excessively large raise. I see that I've got A8s, so I push all in thinking he's on a steal. He instacalls with KK. I'm table short stack. He asks if she dealt me the 8 as a replacement and I tell him yes so he won't realize how aggressive I'm getting. I tell him I just flipped out that I lost my rockets and pushed. I've got 3BB left. I push the next three hands, no one calls. In reality I'm pretty sure she replaced the ace with another ace. I probably wouldn't have pushed with A8o though. I'm not that crazy. Or am I:) |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
I just won my seat. I'm not a tournament player so I don't know much about tipping in these things and I only gave her a ten. I feel like a cheap ass now.
If I win this thing I'm quitting my job and playing for a living. How's that for a plan? |

Wait until you play in that tourney. If it's anything like the regular night tourneys you'll raise w/ AA and get beat by 9-4o just like happened to 'somebody' I know who tried one a couple of weeks ago. |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
No chopping in these sats, I guess?

No chopping in these sats, I guess? [/ QUOTE ] I tried to make a deal with the guy I played heads up but it was a no go. My deal was to give 2nd place their entry fee back. He thought about it for a while and then said no. When I had a 4 to 1 chip lead, he says, how bout that deal. LOL no thanks. I believe he was kidding though.... I hope so anyway. |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
4 to 1 and he only wants 1/10th? I woulda gave him that in a heartbeat. It only takes one hand of him doubling up before he's a threat, two hands for him to take the lead.
|
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
I'm fairly sure he meant guarantee 2nd place their money back while playing it out for first.

Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running

I'm fairly sure he meant guarantee 2nd place their money back while playing it out for first. [/ QUOTE ] yes. And I am not a tournament player, I really have no clue how to make a deal. |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
I was up 4-1 and late for dinner. So was my opponent. So I offered him $200. The dealer says "I don't think you can chop these". I told her not to worry. Guy says nope. I offered $250. No. I asked him what he wants, he replies no chop, that he's been playing these all day and he came to win a seat.
I think he thought he could outplay me or something. He did double up once, and then we got it all in when he had A8 and I had Q8s. He slammed the table in triumph when he saw I was dominated. We both made a straight. It took the dealer a minute to get him to understand that mine was higher. He bolted. I don't think he was too happy. |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
Attempting to make a deal can be frustrating, but the ignorance of other players can be used to your advantage. I was chip leader with 5 players remaining in a tournament once and they decided to give me first place while chopping 2-5th place money. Obviously this was a great deal for me, but none of them seemed to realize or care about that. If I had been one of those stubborn people who says "no deals not matter what" I would have lost a lot of EV. When it comes to deal making time, I find a lot of players are either set in their ways so much they won't listen to a deal proposal that could potentially be beneficial to them, or they haven't much experience making deals and won't speak up if they don't think they are getting a fair deal, submitting to the wishes of the more experienced table consensus.
I just remembered another good deal I made. I was heads up with one other guy and he had a 4-1 chip advantage. He was a complete donkey, I don't even know if he was good enough to qualify as a donkey. Anyway, I figured he didn't have a lot of experience at final tables and he definately didn't seem very good at math. I asked if he wanted to chop 50/50 and he said he wanted to play heads up. I said "Why don't we split up some of it and play for the rest?" and he liked that idea. Essentially, I took some of first place money and gave it to second place. Even with a skill advantage, I figured my chip disadvantage was enough to give him a significant edge in heads up play. Funnily enough, he pushed all in the first hand and I looked down at AA. I called and he showed 26. He flopped a 2 and rivered another one to win the tournament. But I made significantly more than I would have, had I not talked him into a deal. Sorry, this was long winded and kindof got off topic since your opponent was unwilling to make any deal. Perhaps, however, it will be of some use if you cash game players find yourselves in a position to make a tournament deal in the future. |

NEWS FLASH! READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Hell has frozen over and Howard Beale won a seat into the big August tourney on his first try! Seriously, on my way out the door I decided that I didn't want to take mom to Denny's yet and got into a Sat at once. $110 down the drain, I figured. First hand I get 2 black Aces in the SB, get all in v. A-Jo and double up. Except for one huge suck-out card wise (though of small import chip wise) the thing was moderately easy even though I made a few smooth plays if I do say so myself. So, ok everybody, I've got plans for the $250,000 but I'm sure second place money will be decent. btw: I'm sure that Hass won't mind if I mention that he (at the time of my leaving) had made the money in tonights tourney w/ enough chips to be in contention to win. He told me that he's got to play some tourneys to practice for the big one. I think I'd better do the same. |

[/ QUOTE ] Ok so I went card dead for 2 hours and was blinded away until the button open raised AI. I have A8o in the small blind and push. Of course he was trying to steal the blinds with AK and I lose. I still had 2 yellow chips but that was only enough to cover the small blind. I was lucky to be on the button so I had a few hands to try and get some chips back. I get black 9's in the CO, but the bb had aces. 7th place for $911. I played really well actually except for one AK hand where I called in the bb and should have moved all in, I think on what is called a squeeze play. Don't know if I have that right. But whatever. Next tues Howard and I will be going heads up for 1st. Congrats Howard on your score. I don't know if Pope has a seat yet. If he doesn't maybe we could rig one of the satts for him to give a 2+2er the best chance of being AZ poker champ. (kidding, kidding on the rigging) |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
I wonder if I know who you guys are. I go to CAZ fairly regularly, used to be more often. I play mainly 5/150, but occasionally 8/16, 20/40, 10/150 or 6/12 Omaha. I sometimes play the tournaments there also.

Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
Do extra seats have to be sold directly to players? Or can we sell them back at the cage (i.e., return the seat for a refund)?
Thanks |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
I'll buy an extra seat off of you for $250.

It is possible that on the date of the tourney tickets will be selling for a hefty premium. If that becomes true I'll probably sell mine. |
Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
thanks for the info. i guess i'll just pay full entry for the tourney, unless anyone has a discount they want to sell for less? drop me a pm....

This might be a dumb question, but do you have to live in Arizona to play in the "state championship"?
