Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
clarett should be on this no doubt

Wow! I figured things would be a lot closer than this.

Wow! I figured things would be a lot closer than this. [/ QUOTE ] Dwight Gooden had ten good seasons in the Majors. The results of this poll are just stupid. |
Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
Gooden and Hill being on this list is idiotic. And how is Leaf different than Akili, McNown, or any other first round QB bust? He's not a "waste of talent" as much as he's just a guy who couldn't cut it in the NFL. It's not like Leaf was a freakish athlete or anything either...weak pick in this poll.
He may be young, but Prior probably belongs on this list. I thought he'd be building a decent Hall of Fame resume by now. |
Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
gooden wins this hands down
he had 2 or 3 great seasons and 2 or 3 good ones not 10 good seasons he should be in the HOF and a top 10-15 pitcher of all time but he stuffed his career up his nose and is sitting in a jail cell somewhere Theres a million number 1 draft picks who never do anything in on a professional level, but Gooden had the stuff do dominate on a Major League Level |
Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
I dont get this poll. Bo jackson got injured after what could have been a promising NFL career. I mean, did you ever use him in techmo bowl?
Grant Hill came out of Duke, you shoulda known he was too gay/fragile to play in the NBA. Mike Tyson has been knocked out countless times by a guy named little Mac. Doc Gooden has a cy young. Thats one more than 99% of pitchers out there. etc, etc. |
Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
the poll is who is a waste of talent not who has had more success more than most pitchers or other players

[ QUOTE ] Grant Hill came out of Duke, you shoulda known he was too gay/fragile to play in the NBA. [/ QUOTE ] This has to be a joke. [/ QUOTE ] Why? At the time he came out Duke players were doing poorly in the NBA, especially in comparison to UNC guys. |
Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
I still maintain that Len Bias' love in this poll/thread is a joke. Add in Jay Williams for sure if he's getting this much love.
Really though, voting for anyone who never had a chance to compete at all on a pro level is kind of silly IMO. Even super hyped guys aren't locks to have great pro careers, and neither Jay or Len even went #1 overall. |
Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
Gooden leading this is dumb. He likely accomplished almost 2/3 (192 wins) of what he was capable of accomplishing at the MLB level. He even won a ring.
Ricky Williams got about 1/4 out of his NFL career and started doing Yoga. Think about how much more Ricky would have accomplished relative to Gooden (if they played out their career at full capacity). Gooden is better at his sport than Ricky at his, though. I will concede that. |

[/ QUOTE ] I tried to include guys who are mainly finished with their career, and I also tried to include guys who had a chance of winning. If you don't like it make your own [censored] poll. |
Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
Pretty insane that Bias is doing so well. He was never even tested on the NBA level. Too many what ifs for me to vote for him.
|
Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
Were's Doug Wickenheiser, Alexandre Daigle, etc? i could probably think of better hockey ones given time, but my point is made.
If we're limited to obscure regional sports, how about Josh Gibson et al.? based on this list, I've never even heard of Len Bias or Ryan Leaf, so it must be one of them. |

Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
i agree about some of the names on this list being stupid.
being very good for a while and then losing your career to injury is not a waste of talent. this list should be for players who have the tools to be elite, but seem to just be "pretty good" |
Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
How is Derrick Coleman not on this list?
|
Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
Why is Len Bias getting so many votes?
I never saw him play, but I can't imagine that he was so incredibly good you can say he's the biggest waste of talent without ever playing in the nba. Like if Carmelo died before he got to play, I doubt he would win this poll. It's just that the story of Bias has been romanticized over the years that people thought he was going to be the next Jordan or something. Someone like Richard Dumas would be a better pick. |

[/ QUOTE ] First of all, he was incredibly talented. He was tall, strong, and quick. His game was pretty polished as well on the fundamental side. If I had to pick a modern day comparison, Dwight Howard comes to mind. Maybe Chris Bosh. As to why his death is considered such a waste of talent, think about the situation. He was easily the best player in the draft (LOL-Cleveland taking Brad Daugherty because they "needed" a center more than the best available player; hello, Sam Bowie before Jordan). He was just drafted by the NBA champions. He would have spent his first couple of years in the league playing behind and learning from Bird, McHale, and Parrish. He would have racked up a title or two in his first few years. Instead of all of this happening, he got coked up celebrating being drafted and died. I can't think of an athlete who threw away more when you combine everything he lost (the money, the potential titles, and most of all, his life). Dumas was an incredible athlete, but not in the same class of player as Bias. |

Ricky Williams got about 1/4 out of his NFL career and started doing Yoga. [/ QUOTE ] Williams played 5 seasons before he retired. You're saying he would have had a 20 year career? Gooden is a silly choice because he did accomplish a lot. Bias is the best choice because it was a pure waste of talent. He didn't have a partial pro career, he had NO pro career because of drugs. He killed, not only himself, but the UM basketball program and (arguably) the Celtics potential dynasty. |

Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:
Whoa whoa whoa.. I honestly can't tell.. are you being sarcastic?
edit: I mean, seriously? Larry Nance was a stud, even when he came to Cleveland. They already had Mark Price, one of the best PGs in the league. They were competitive in an already stacked East. If MJ misses that floating jumper from the foul line, who knows what happens in '92? They were a good team. |

Re: Biggest Waste of Talent Poll:

see my edit. I honestly think you're retarded. [/ QUOTE ] I think you should do your research next time. The Cavaliers received Larry Nance and Mike Sanders for Kevin Johnson, Mark West, Tyrone Corbin, and a draft pick which ended up being Dan Majerle. So in exchange for Nance (because Sanders doesn't count), the Suns received a top point guard (better than Mark Price), a good rebounding / shot blocking center, an excellent defensive small forward, and an excellent defensive player who could also score. That Cleveland regime was obviously a poor judge of talent and grossly overpaid for Nance's services. I'll concede that at the time the general conscencus was that it was good a trade for Cleveland, but Phoenix obviously knew what they were doing and within two seasons that trade was a joke. |

Dumas had a rookie season that Bias would have been ecstatic to match, also had his career ruined by drugs, yet no one is saying he is the biggest waste of talent. |
