Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
This post doesn't refer to anyone as ghey, ugly, fat,or an annoying loudmouth, I apologize in advance.
On the WSOP broadcast last Tuesday, Alex admitted that his "tournament results probably exceeded his poker skills". That is a realistic comment that many tournament winners would do well to adopt. It's pretty sad to see the tournament trail getting littered with people who over estimate their skill and underestimate the realities of tournament poker. Whether it's Mark Newhouse getting "fleeced" by his "friends" or Shannon Shorr blogging about how terrible players x,y and z are, yet they are exceeding his own results, it's the same story over and over. Someone gets lucky during their first few years of playing tournaments and way over estimates not only their own skill level, but doesn't understand that you need excellent money management to weather the huge expenses, taxes, and general overhead to continue doing what you love. Alex seems to understand this. Good for him. |
Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
Definitely refreshing to see.

Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
great to see a successful tourney player remain humble
|
Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
really true, and the ironic part is that his skills are better then most who aren't admitting it
you can pretty much say its impossible to make a living playing tournaments unless your name is phil hellmuth |
Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
"Shannon Shorr blogging about how terrible players x,y and z are"
I havn't read that from his blog |
Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
This is indeed evidence that he is a smart man. However, the reason he is a smart man, and therefore the answer to the implied question 'Why is Alex Jacobs a smart man?' is 'because he is a jew with a giant jew-fro.'
|
Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
AJ definitely comes across as one of the most likeable players out there, both in the recent WSOP broadcast and last year's USPC.

"Shannon Shorr blogging about how terrible players x,y and z are" I havn't read that from his blog [/ QUOTE ] He has slammed Humberto Brenes, Rene Angelil, and this is quoted from his blog "I was happy to see a very bad French player named Paul Testud two to my left though, because he is really a bleeder." Maybe these people are "bad" to Shannon, but they do fairly well in tournaments. I really have enjoyed Shannon's blog, but he seems to slam a lot of the people who knock him out of tournaments when it appears from the blog that he likes to shove mediocre hands and makes wrong reads for all of his chips. We all do it, but if it's happening a lot, then maybe you're overestimating your skills and under estimating your opponents'. |
Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
I've been a big AJ fan since he's come into prominence, I love stories about his slow decision making putting his opponents on tilt. And I liked it too when he said his results probably exceeded his ability, but he was clear to say that he thinks he's a very good player. I'd love to hear DN say something as grounded as that..

Nononono. You have to realize the only reason he got into Yale was the Jew-fro.

Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
but you can think that your results exceed your poker skill, and that lots of people with good results are really bad at poker, and be right about both. If AJ were to write up a report of a tournament he played with key hands and stuff like Shannon Shorr does, I'm sure it would have to include his assessment of players at his table, and I'm sure he would call a lot of them bad too.

When DN was on his streak in '04, he said many similar things. Paul Phillips did this as well. You won't hear many people outside of Hellmuth proclaiming themselves to be the hottest [censored] since sliced bread. |
Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
I also think AJ is a great player...BUT...
Do you think that he said "my results overestimate my skill" because he honestly believes that or he is just trying to remain humble for the cameras. I'm sure he KNOWS he fking destroys tournies and he is one of the best out there. But if he actually said something like that we'd all be hating on him even if it was true. If I was in AJ's position I would say the same thing he did to remain humble and liked by the poker community. I don't see the sense in trying to build yourself up by TALKING a big game. His results speak for itself....and I'm sure he knows that. Overall, good play by him. He def seems like one of the most "grounded" players out there and will never get sidetracked into all the BS. |

[/ QUOTE ] yea that would have pissed me off. "I'm all in." - Ireland player runs away from table immediately. I can't believe thats even allowed. He might as well sit in a back room and use buttons to push fold b/c he's never at the table anyways. |
Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
this would be awesome to hear jamie gold say, especially if he included the word "probably"
|
Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
whenever aj goes deep in a tourney all he ever says is that he's running hotter than the sun and what a joke tournaments are. very refreshing considering 90% of the other young players with his success think they are god's gift to tournament poker.

whenever your in a quandary, just ask yourself. what would alex jacob do?

Re: Why Alex Jacobs is a smart man
Yeah Allen Cunningham says "I go all in" like that also, I'm assuming that's where he got it from. After I watched the slew of Cunningham coverage from last year's WSOP ME, I actually caught myself saying it the next time I played live. I felt dumb. On another Jacob note, can someone explain to me what his thought process was for calling that all in from the Irish guy with just a pair of 4's? Put him squarely on a draw? Even so, it seemed like really terrible to me. Anyways, I know this isn't really related to thread but I can't blame Shannon Shorr for bashing Brenes. I mean he seems like a nice guy and all but his antics at the table are excruciatingly annoying, I can't even watch him on TV anymore without being angered- I can't possibly imagine actually playing at a table with him.
