What Should I do for Newhouse?
By now, most of you know that Mark Newhouse and I had a prop bet that resulted in my losing 34 bounds, winning $7500 or so dollars and massively increasing my website's traffic thanks to a drama bomb. I want to use a portion of the winnings to do something for Mark.
My first inclination was to buy him one round trip ticket for a two-three day trip to an island with no legalized gambling, on the insistance that he leave all mechanical devices on the mainland. I think giving him a glimpse of tranquility without gambling would be good for him. I suggested it to mark and he's letting the idea fester a bit, but in the meantime, I thought I'd solicit some other ideas. Ultimately, I'm looking for something that Mark will enjoy while benefitting him. I think we all know he's a great guy with money management issues and that some time away from the tables might do him a little good. If anyone has some ideas, please let me hear them. I'm going to post something similar on my website, then open up the topic in the forums. Two things to keep in mind: * Despite the bet, I'm not a wealthy guy. Most of my money goes back into the site, of which I'm only part-owner. people who have seen how I dress know I live life on a budget (albeit a loose one. I'm not the best money manager myself):P * I want the gift to be enjayable to Mark as well as beneficial. I won't be buying him a GA lifetime membership. Thanks in advance for any useful suggestions. Gary Wise [/ QUOTE ] EDIT Yes, I edited this...saw the line about leaving all mechanical devices on the mainland after I initially wrote about going someplace without the internet...blah blah blah... back to the somewhat helpful suggestion: I think your idea sending him away would be a helpful one. Maybe setting him up with fund managers to help manage his money (so that he can't lend it out to anyone)? Only temporary until he can get his feet back on solid ground instead of blowing through money by giving it to those that would only seek to hurt him? |

Gary:
Best gift - waive the prop debt. You have benefited greatly with traffic, I think thats a fair trade. In exchange Newhouse can blog for another month or so, or whatever you two agree to. Second best gift - A feature on ESPN. Unfortunatly thats not really ethical, but it would be nice! Third best gift - Pay for some of his room bill at the Bellagio. Thats f'n expensive mate! Fourth best gift - charity, charity, charity. But the idea of a busto (for now) player giving you money to give to charity is weird, no? If this is what you end up doing I'd like to recommend Charity:water, an organization which drills clean water wells in Africa. PS - call me when your free |
Re: What Should I do for Newhouse?
1. Send him to promises, then set him up on a date with his personality twin Britney Spears.
2. Give the $$ to Neverwin or Brandi so NH can post another drama blog. 3. Keep it because he wont appreciate anything you do for him. 4. Go for double or nothing!!! 5. Buy him a pound of weed so he can start a second source of income for when he goes busto. 6. Buy him a gun, he'll either shoot himself, Neverwin, or Brandi!!! It's great to hear these young internet punks are learning what it's like to go busto. Especially for us older lifetime grinders who have never been lucky enough to win a 2 million WPT event. Hopefully this will teach these boys that a life in poker is not a walk in the park. Neverwin, NH and these other druggy poker punks will all be dead in less than 10yrs anyway. They deserve zero sympathy, keep your money!!! |

Re: What Should I do for Newhouse?
Look, I think that Newhouse has a problem. So if you want to use this money to try to help him with him problem, I suggest something where he will be out of touch, but still having an exciting time, like a extreme sporting vacation. White water rafting, rainforest trips, hiking, whatever he would be most into as an escape. That way he will not be playing poker, but will remember he doesn't need to gamble to have fun. Longer than a week would be better, as if he really has a problem it will take a while for his brain to adjust, even if he is doing something that is a rush in itself. I would suggest that one or more of his friends should come with him. That way it will just be a cool vacation, and not a save Newhouse thing.

PS - call me when your free [/ QUOTE ] Some thoughts on these: waiving the debt - The value of Mark blogging was totally understood when we made the bet. I also think this sets a bad precedent for me in any future prop bets I enter, so I wouldn't be comfortable with this. I'm going to use a portion thank Mark and donate a portion to cancer research, but I think just giving it back defeats the point of betting in the first place. ESPN feature - This would be a lot easier if Mark had survived day 1. i think his story is compelling enough that it's worth telling, but right now I'm mostly restricted to WSOP stories. As an example, if Gavin Griffin had survived day 1, I would have done a piece on his charitable efforts. Now, that piece has been shelved til after the series. I'd also only do the piece if ESPN allowed me the flexibility to write it fully. I somehow doubt that will happen. Bellagio - I like the idea of hiring a money manager a lot more. Paying for Bellagio would benefit mark, but I'd rather the benefits be potentially long term. Charity - Like I said, a portion will go there. My father and grandmother both died of cancer, so that's my cause of choice. I may confer with Mark on which charity he'd like the money to go to, maybe split it 50-50. Thus far, I really like the idea of a money manager. I'm also thinking a life coach might make some sense (my mother is in that industry, so she'll be able to recommend someone appropriate). Keep the ideas coming. Out to lunch, Gary |
Re: What Should I do for Newhouse?
You have a broke, honest friend who owes u money on some retarded bet where you had no risk of losing money. if you don't use all $7500 on your "gift" u are a douche and not a friend in the least

Re: What Should I do for Newhouse?
Gary, ignore the haters, i think its a relief that one of Newhouse's friends is actually trying to do something to help him. I think both a life coach and money manager are a good idea.
If you go with the holiday idea let me suggest something that I once did that was wonderful. You can take a week's (or longer) camping trip in the Grand Canyon where you go white water rafting along the Colorado river. This is an amazing way to get away from everything and clear your mind, and it's also an incredible rush and great fun. Plus nothing puts things in perspective better than sleeping under the stars and watching the sunset on the Grand Canyon walls. Sorry I can't remember the name of the company but sure you can google something. Good luck to you both. |
Re: What Should I do for Newhouse?
It's important for Mark to know that you can go from being a compulsive gambler to being a productive and winning poker player; but definite life changes need to be made.
Through the reading of Mark's blogs and hearing things from mutual acquaintances, he has issues in life that will continue to sabotage his success until they are addressed. No trip to an island or another serenity resort can facilitate this and any impact will be short lived. |
Re: What Should I do for Newhouse?
I haven't met you either, and it's exactly what I thought -- what anyone with some experience of human nature would think. Jeez, passive aggressive much? If you respect this person as a man and a friend, collect on the bet you won and buy him at most a round of beers, on the assumption that one day the wheel will turn and he'll be the winner. If you think he's a hopeless degenerate with no chance at winning at life, which I suppose we all do at this point, the decent thing is STILL to pretend you think he's a man and an equal and to treat him as such. Would you appreciate having your electronic toys confiscated and sent away to some desert island to contemplate your addictions and your loserhood? No, you wouldn't, because you have your pride. If this person is a friend, give him credit for having the same. If you truly dislike this person and want to humiliate him in public, fine, the free trip to Gilligan's Island will do it as well as any of the other ideas on this thread.

[/ QUOTE ] Waiving the debt would only be fair if he provided equivalent value in services, such as 7.5k worth blogging for 1 year. I agree that you can't waive it without real world value in return or it will destroy your ability to bet props in the future... but if it helps your business you might make more that way. Just food for thought, I never really expected this to be a good solution. |

Or just go for the cheap option and buy him a copy of Zen and the Art of Poker. It's the best book out there on avoiding tilt. And get him to read the chapters in Ace on the River about degens, women and gambling etc...
