Atlantic city sucks
I was trying to get to AC from Ventnor which is aprox 2 mile south. I was traveling North on Atlantic when all of a sudden a cop pulls in front of me and blocks the lane. He gets out and starts redirecting traffic to Ventnor ave. Okay.. I turn right on ventnor and go another 4 or 5 blocks when theres another cop redurecting traffic back to Atlantic ave. ghay....I turn back to atlantic and theres another cop at that intersection redirecting traffic back SOUTH. So at that point I give up trying to get to AC and go to Ocean City to play Family Guy pinball and Galaga.
I never found out the reason they were redirecting traffic. |
Re: Atlantic city sucks
Why were they redirecting traffic this past Saturday?
|
Re: Atlantic city sucks
everybody knows this city sucks, and is dirty, and has ugly hookers but...they also have casinos, and in those casinos you can gamble

The rest of the AC casinos are no worse than downtown Vegas, and parts of it are becoming more like the Vegas strip. Within three years, there will be four Borgata-quality casinos built, three of which will be on the boardwalk. And the others are upgrading to keep up. Casears is already really nice. Too bad their poker room is pretty dead. Overall, AC will be changing a lot in the next few years. The money is starting to pour in. |

I play mostly limit, and they seem to usually have trouble even getting 3/6 games going. I'm just now starting to play NL a little more, so maybe I should check it out more often. Thanks.

Re: Atlantic city sucks
I noticed all the cops out directing traffic too. I have no friggin clue as to why. It seemed entirely random.
|
Re: Atlantic city sucks
I think there were a couple of big fires in AC this past weekend. The police may have been directing traffic away from the fire.
On Ocean City, my idea of hell on earth. No booze (even though I quit drinking), kids and bicyles everywhere, everyplace closes at 9, etc. City slogans: Atlantic City: Always turned on. Ocean City: Still waiting for Prometheus. |
Re: Atlantic city sucks
Yes, a fire. Not sure why you wouldn't just walk down the boardwalk from Ventnor anyway, unless you're going to Harrah's or Borgata.
From the "Press of Atlantic City": ATLANTIC CITY — A two-alarm fire Saturday caused no major injuries, but threw a major wrench into traffic on one of the resort's busiest weekends. Firefighters responded to the blaze at 3:38 p.m. on Trenton Terrace, between South Harrisburg and South Trenton avenues. Fire Chief Dennis Brooks said the fire most likely started as an exterior trash fire that spread to the structure. The warehouse contained lots of fiberglass products, which helped accelerate the flames, Brooks said. Firefighters cut a ventilation hole into the roof of the one-story warehouse, which prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent apartment buildings at 3807 and 3809 Atlantic Ave., Brooks said. |
Re: Atlantic city sucks
AC needs a monorail. 4 stops on the boardwalk, 2 in the Marina and one at the big parking garage they should build near the intersection of the AC Expressway and the Garden State Parkway.

[/ QUOTE ] I have been to the Borgata, and I like the physical structure, though it's confusing to get around all those slots and difficult to get to the pokerroom (if you don't already know how to get there). I think the idea in designing the hotel was that "if we build it in AC but away from the boardwalk, we'll get a classier clientele with more money" (notice that none of the charter buses or greyhound stop there) which may be how it's worked out for them (I know they are doing exceedingly well financially), but sorry, I would appreciate better access from the boardwalk. I also think that the staff there tries too hard to create an "exclusive" aura, and in the process, behave rudely, which - for a casino which is trying to be classy to have classless staff - um, I don't get it. But maybe I'm just too negative. I'll give it another try next time. |

I can't believe Philly will be letting AC keep an edge by not offering table games. Florida is getting the poker crap cleared up in a few weeks. They are also bringing in craps and BJ. Yonkers raceway has slots now. They are renovating the Boardwalk in Coney Island in Brooklyn. My lawyer freind went to a golf outing the other day about renovating the boardwalk in Rockaway with a bunch of city and state legislators. I can't believe NY won't find some excuse to bring in the gambling. I do not believe all the new casino projects will be started in AC since they will not be profitable with the new gambling in PA and NY |

[ QUOTE ] I do not believe all the new casino projects will be started in AC since they will not be profitable with the new gambling in PA and NY [/ QUOTE ] A decline in revenue doesn't mean they're not still profitable. They are. It's like a $5 billion dollar industry here still, the problem is that the casinos here are relatively old. The higher end casinos here are having no revenue problems whatsoever. Killing off the Sands was a good start, getting rid of a couple others and putting up some nicer ones will go a long way. |
Re: Atlantic city sucks
I would think that the fact that PA is getting casinos would mean that AC would have to up the ante in order to compete, and will try to do so.
Don't know if it is feasible, but I would love to see a new casino (or an existing one) on the Boardwalk start a really nice big poker room to compete with the Borgata. The Borgata is a great place, but the fact that it is not on the boardwalk/beach is a big negative if you want the full AC experience. |

Hurry back! You missed the thrill of the road which goes to Absecon, with the concrete barrier, which prevents all left turns and U turns....for miles!! I don't hold it against the town. They probably figured it's the only way to prevent "head on" collisions.

From the pinnacle website, the casino company that bought the sands:
On November 17th, 2006, we completed the purchase of the Sands Hotel & Casino and Traymore Hotel sites in the famed Atlantic City, New Jersey. Together, the land being acquired comprises approximately 18 contiguous acres at the heart of Atlantic City, with extensive frontage along the Boardwalk. We plan to design and build an entirely new casino hotel on the site, which would be among the largest and most spectacular resorts in the region. "Atlantic City is one of the top U.S. gaming destinations, and we're looking forward to being a part of the world-famous Boardwalk," said Daniel R. Lee, Pinnacle's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "This major new resort will be a key component in our plan to build a national network of gaming properties. It will also help extend our development pipeline and our Company's growth through 2010 and beyond. In connection with our longstanding interest in Atlantic City, we submitted our initial license application in New Jersey several months ago.” From what i last heard this is supposed to be done in the next 3-4 years |

Morgan Stanley & Revel Entertainment is already breaking ground on a $1B+ mega casino on the 20+ acre lot next to the Showboat on the north end. On the south end, a group is planning to build a large casino next to the Hilton. And supposedly a new large casino from MGM/Boyd is going up in the Marina district near the Borgata. This is addition to the new towers already being build at the Taj, Harrah's, and Borgata and the announced expansion of the Hilton to try to keep up with the big boys. Haven't heard much lately about Wynn and Trump knocking down the Trump Plaza and building a new mega casino there. Probably got stalled by Trump's failed plans to sell his casinos. Maybe those plans will be revived now that Trump's probably going to personally take over the lead of the casino operations part of his business. |

Another MGM Grande is going in the big property in between the Borgata and Harrah's. Finally, Steve Wynn is building a new property along the boardwalk as well that is supposed to be larger than any other building in AC. Things are definitely looking up for AC, its just ashame that the ppl don't change regardless of what remarkable upgrades to the landscape they make. |
