Tell me about Philly
Headed to Philly next week for a business trip. Should have evenings and potentially a half day free. Are there any poker rooms within driving distance?

Re: Tell me about Philly
You can catch a train from 30th street station to Atlantic City then catch a cab/bus to get to the casino.

Draw backs are it does take a bit longer than driving given that you have to go on the train schedule and there is the time to and from both the train stations and the train doesn't run all night so you either have to make the last train at like 12:30 or whatever or come back in the morning. The train is cheap. Like $16-20 round trip. Even if traffic is bad, driving at worst be a little longer than the train method but usually 30 minutes faster. |

As for how bad it is, my 'commute' is roughly 5 minutes longer (Saturday late AM)- taking an hour instead of just under that. Just get left after the $2 toll (basically by exit 14 be in the left lane of the Expressway) and you'll be on the straight shot. Get caught right, ugh. |

Re: Tell me about Philly
The guy wants to here about Philly not AC.
In Philadelphia you can get soft pretzels, cheese steaks, see the liberty bell. Oh and you will probably get shot. Happens all the time. |

Re: Tell me about Philly
I don't think traffic would be too bad any time you go, even on a Friday afternoon. I left for AC last Friday at around 5 p.m. from Delaware County (which is south of Philly), and I still made it in under 1.5 hours. If you're driving from Philadelphia, it will be a little slow on the Jersey side until you hit the AC Expressway, but then it should be smooth sailing.
I wouldn't expect any traffic if you go on a weeknight after your business day is through. It is no more than an hour to an hour and fifteen minute drive without traffic. Also, there are some good tournies in AC that start at 7 p.m. on weeknights. Finally, there used to be some good bus deals from Philadelphia to AC that included decent comps and service directly to a casino so that you don't have to hassle with transportation from the AC train station. Check with the concierge at your hotel in Philadelphia. I'll bet he or she can help. |
Re: Tell me about Philly
Seriously, Philly is the biggest shithole I've ever been to. You definitely don't want to be around the wrong places there. The traffic is a nightmare so forget about trying to drive to AC during rush hour.
I have a cute little traffic story from my last trip....coming back from AC and getting ready to cross the B.Franklin bridge, try to picture that turn right before the toll booth where you can't see around the corner. So traffic is flowing about 60 and I'm in the left lane, as soon as I turn the corner there is a car PARKED in the left lane. I slam on the brakes and fishtail into another lane as did everyone else and then the retarded asian driver takes the car out of park and slowly drives the car across traffic(nearly killing more people) and goes to park off the right shoulder of the road. I was raging and tried to get over there(bad things were going to happen if I did) but traffic was so heavy I couldn't get across(prob a good thing). It's just mind boggling hpow stupid people can be. Asian women drivers tend to be among the worst too, I avoid them like the plague. |
Re: Tell me about Philly
Just drive to AC, forget the train. Traffic is not as bad as people are making it out to be.

Center City (including the Rittenhouse Square area, Society Hill, Old City, and the historic area) are all very safe to be walking around any time of the day or night. The city also has some awesome restaurants and bars that are more affordable than in most of the large cities in the country. As for traffic, the usual rush hour/weekend push might add 10 to 15 minutes at most to a drive down to the shore. Without question, you can expect to avoid any kind of tie-up on the roads that would make driving an unreasonable alternative. All in all, there are a lot worse places to be when traveling, whether on business or for pleasure. |
Re: Tell me about Philly
I've been to a lot of cities my opinion is that Philly is the biggest shithole, you may think otherwise and that's fine. Of course there are some nice places to visit downtown but for the most part it's a dump. Highest murder rate in the country.

Re: Tell me about Philly
Philly sucks. there are some positives. it doesn't take long to see them all. Traffic is not that bad compared to other East Coast cities (provided you can avoid the expressway).
|
Re: Tell me about Philly
The reason the traffic is so bad is SHORE traffic. Everyone and their mother leaves for the shore and the AC expressway becomes a parking lot. A normal 70 minute drive will be closer to 100 minutes minimum. Maybe add another 20 minutes. Not horrible but a pain. Factor in general rush hour traffic and it is just a mess.

Re: Tell me about Philly
As far as your best poker action in AC its generally at the Borgata which has 80+ tables daily tournies and the most action. Also the nicest casino in AC. Always 1/2 (5-20 tables) 2/5 NL (2-10 tables), 5/10 NL ( lotta weekdays too ) 10/25 NL on weekends. Always 2-4 3-6 10-20 limit, usually 6-12 and 20-40. Weekends limit gets higher 40-80 all the time not sure what the highest regular game is. Some omaha some stud. No jackpot. Play with Borgata card and get 1 dollar an hour comps.

Re: Tell me about Philly
Underneath the poker room at the Borgata is a food court. Go downstairs, walk up to the Tony Lukes counter and order a "pork italian". Very +EV.

Yet, you won't find people saying "man LV is a horrible area" because North Las Vegas has some really rough patches. |

Re: Tell me about Philly
For cities with populations over 1M, Philly had the highest murder rate in 2006. It's a fact. But if you go past the top 10 cities by population, Detroit and Baltimore are going to be higher, I believe.
Regardless, sorry you had an accident while you were there, but there is plenty to like about Philly, and shithole is hyperbole. |
Re: Tell me about Philly
If you go by murders per capita Baltimore wins.

Re: Tell me about Philly
Ugh.
I make the dreaded 5pm drive to AC from the Art Museum area nearly every Friday. The best way to get to down there first involves getting rip roaring stoned on 7-8 volcano bags. Fill up another balloon and roll a joint for the car ride. If you squeeze it in tight, you can fit a full balloon in your Jansport backpack. Next, enter your car, turn on the new 104.5 for music (similar, but not as great as Y100 used to be) or if you are into talk radio, give Kidd Chris on 94.1 a listen. Since you are incredibly stoned, feel free to sing to music and perhaps talk to Kidd Chris through the radio. I'm pretty sure he can hear you, but he's got a show to do, so he doesn't talk back. Drive up to Girard and check your gas tank. Dang, its low, but you probably have enough to get to Jersey, where the gas is pumped for you and about 20 cents a gallon cheaper. Take 76E at Girard and prepare to enter 76 through an intense on-ramp (very short time to merge). You'll average 40mph or so if you stay in the right lane, avoid the left lane initially as that lane merges to 676. In general, change lanes as frequently as possible. Sure you might only get ahead 1-2 cars, but that adds up after you change lanes 40 times. Follow the signs and soon you'll be crawling over the Walt Whitman bridge. Your 40mph will be reduced to stop and go traffic on a large 50 year old bridge. This part f'ing sucks. At this point, I like to call my girlfriend who is usually in an art therapy session. Last week, I called her and told her about how awesome the Jay-Z remix of Rehab was. She got pretty pissed at me later that day for interupting her session, but come on, its an awesome song. After the ole WW, the traffic will still be stop and go until 42 becomes the glorious Atlantic City Expressway. I like to take a pit stop and stop at that gas station by the WaWa and then to WaWa for supplies (ice tea, maybe cash (PNC ATM), and maybe some dinner). Don't forget to constantly change lanes and pass whenever you can. There is a bridge exit on the left a few miles into Jersey. Its a dick move, but travel in that left exit lane for as long as you can before merging back. This really saves you time because the traffic around this area is usually pretty bad. After you get on the ACE, it's pretty smooth sailing at speeds around 75mph in the left lane. On the ACE, only use the left lane for passing. Cops are usually speckled along the ACE, though I never had any problems. The 1-way trip takes about 105 minutes with a 10 minute stop for gas and supplies. Its not bad and actually kinda fun in a way, merging through all the lanes. Last week, I saw some skanky girls (obviously headed to the shore), changing in the car. I think I saw tit pressed against the window, so that was nice. |
