The 7 \'New Wonders\' of the World

This is the voting to narrow down to 7, which has been completed. How many have you been to? For voting purposes I'm going to say within 100 yards counts as being there, unless you couldn't get closer or something.

Has anyone been to any of these and didn't think they were that spectacular? Seems like some countries (*cough* US *cough*) got an automatic entry.

I've been to 5: Great Walll, Kiyomizu, Colloseum, Eiffel, Statue of Liberty.

I had a chance to continue on toe Angkor with my friends, but I skipped it because I wanted to go back to the states to fight a red light ticket. Kids, don't ever do something like that. See everything you can while you're in the area. You may never be back.

Whats the criteria for these? I couldn't find anything about that on the website.

For instance, the Statue of Liberty could maybe considered a "wonder of the world" from a cultural point of view. But other than that, its not a particularly impressive statue (in terms of being better than most of the world).

The same could be said of the Eiffel Tower.

I think that the Hagia Sophia has to be awarded one of the seven places. Englineers today still don't know how the roof holds up.

Re: The 7 \'New Wonders\' of the World

Went to Machu Pichu with my GF who is Peruvian a few months ago.

That is where I learned about this new 7 Wonders voting because a couple tour-guides and others mentioned it.
Seems they really want to be recognized among the new 7 Wonders.
GF immediately went home and voted for it.
I believe her family in Lima was also aware of the voting for this. If so then that makes it more a national thing for them and not just something that a couple tour-guides at the site are pushing.

I have to think it is deserving.
How the hell did they get all those monster rocks all the way to the top of the mountain?
For those who don't know, it's the Lost City of the Incas. It's at the top of a mountain and the only reason the Spaniards didn't destroy it while they were destroying everything else looking for gold, artifacts, etc is that they never saw it.
It wasn't discovered by the new world until the early 20th century.
Please tell me that the Statue of Liberty doesn't get voted in as one fo the new 7 Wonders. That would be pretty weak.

Samantha Brown's Passport to Latin America features her trip to Cuzco and then Machu Pichu this Wednesday evening I believe (July 11 11 I believe).

Not to get all Peruvian wacky on you guys but I also think the Nazca Lines probably should have gotten a nomination too but maybe it was limited to one per country.
These strike me as far more 'wonderous' than some of the
other nominations.
They can only be seen from the sky and nobody knows exactly why they made them.

how could the people that made those have known what they looked like? thats pretty incredible. i think stonehenge is one of the most bizarre and incredible things ever made, pyramids too, and petra also, which is unfortunately falling apart very fast.

Yes she does. She had been sick and claimed she couldn't get around on her own. Although in her defense, my buddy was probably going to be sampling the local "flavor" down there, and she probably had a decent idea of this since they both did together in Thailand. She still sucks for a lot of reasons though.

psu - definitely.

The Northern Lights in northern Alaska wouldn't be a terrible nomination either but you can also see the Northern Lights from a few other countries.

(p.s. - I saw these on a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska once but they ween't very good that night).

I'm sure there are others in the U.S. that would be decent nominations but I can't immediately think of them.

I've been to the Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, and Schloss Neuschwanstein. The castle is (to me, anyway) more impressive than the previous two.

Hoping to make it to the Acropolis, Colosseum, Stonehenge, and the Alhambra when I'm abroad in Paris this fall.

btw, where are the f*cking pyramids? they were built 500-1000 years BC. It is estimated that the Giza plateau took about 400 years to complete.

5 - Stonehenge, Taj, Great Wall, Statue of Liberty, St. Basil's.

Never done Paris/Rome but will, ticking them off soon. Wife has done Petra.

Also, the Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral are two seperate buildings, so that's weird. St. Basil's is the small turret which is red/green with tetrahedrons on it, the rest is called the "Palace of the Intercession of the Virgin". the Kremlin is a white building some few hundred yards from the church. Nitty.

Re: The 7 \'New Wonders\' of the World

Okay, I screwed up. They have to be man-made so obviously Northern Lights and stuff like that is out.

Still thought the Nazca Lines would deserve consideration but then see that they are not 'archetectural structures' which I think is also a requirement.

Re: The 7 \'New Wonders\' of the World

For comparison (from Wikipedia):
Original 7 Wonders of the world...6 of which no longer exist. All around the Mediterranean rim primarily Greek or Egyptian.

Great Pyramid of Giza
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
Statue of Zeus at Olympia
Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus
Colossus of Rhodes
Lighthouse of Alexandria

Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages:

Typically representative of the seven:

* Stonehenge
* Colosseum
* Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
* Great Wall of China
* Porcelain Tower of Nanjing
* Hagia Sophia
* Leaning Tower of Pisa

Other sites that have been mentioned include:

* Taj Mahal
* Cairo Citadel
* Ely Cathedral
* Cluny Abbey

Tourist travel wonders

The following list of the top seven tourist travel wonders (not including pilgrimages) was compiled by Hillman Wonders:

* Great Pyramids of Giza
* Great Wall of China
* Taj Mahal
* Serengeti Migration
* Galápagos Islands
* Grand Canyon
* Machu Picchu

Natural wonders

Similar to the other lists of wonders, there is no consensus on a list of seven natural wonders of the world, as there has been debate over how large the list should be. One of the many lists was compiled by CNN:[11]

* Grand Canyon
* Great Barrier Reef
* Harbor of Rio de Janeiro
* Mount Everest
* Polar Aurora
* Parícutin volcano
* Victoria Falls

Also - LOL at Good Morning America compiling their own list of the "New Seven Wonders" in 2006.
They included "The Internet" right in there with the Polar Ice Caps, Mayan Ruins and Grand Canyon.

Based on the list they are being judged primarily on the standards at the time of construction and their cultural impact. If you were looking for the most impressive engineering feats you would end up with the nuclear waste depository at Yucca Mountain and [censored].

I read somewhere that Egyptian officials complained about having to compete for a spot on this list, since the pyramids are the only one of the original seven wonders still in existence. Now I think they are guaranteed a spot and the voting is to decide the seven "new" wonders of the world.

MicroBob 07-07-2007 04:44 PM

Re: The 7 \'New Wonders\' of the World

econo - I read the same thing. Indeed they are 'guaranteed' a spot no matter what. They were quite insulted that the only remaining wonder from the original 7 somehow has to be voted in again.

Acropolis, Taj Mahal, Pyramids, Machu Picchu, Hagia Sophia, Chichen Itza, The Eiffel Tower, The Great Wall of China, Petra, and the Statue of liberty for me.

I think it’s ridiculous that the Statue of liberty is on here... Also, I thought that Tikal in Guatemala was better than Chichen Itza… but, whatever.

Voting:

Taj Mahal, Angor, Pyramids, Machu Picchu, Hagi Sophia, Great Wall, Colloseum would be my votes…. Although Petra, Acropolis, and Easter Island could be there too.

i don't really get the statue of liberty hate. I'm not really up to date on my enormous free-standing statuary, but are there other things that are at all comparable? The thing is like 300 feet tall including the base, and it's a hugely important cultural symbol. What more are you looking for in a world wonder?
