This is semi-inspired by private joker's thread about the donk on his airplane trip.

I love it when people who have no idea about professional/serious gambling attempt to have a conversation with me about it when they just say such inane things. Crap like "zomg gambling is risky lol" or "you can't lose what you don't put in the middle."

I think my most hated is "but how much did you lose?" lol or "so I heard you played poker today? So-and-so told me you had a bad day?"

Then I'll respond with something like "oh, I dropped about 5 buyins today in some coolers and some questionable plays by myself, so around $1000. But in anycase I'm not worried about it because it was a small sample size and I think my table selection skills are impr-"

"OMG 1000 bucks!!!!!1! Dude that's alot of money! You sure you don't have a gambling problem?"

me: ".....uh-mazing."

BBV, what phrases/questions which average joejanedonks use tilt you the most? These people can be close friends, your wife, or total strangers. Doesn't matter. Trip reports would be nice too. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Whoa you tell people about losing $1000? I tell people when I have really small winning or losing days, like $200, they still freak out

they don't seem to understand the difference between poker and a slot machine

Honestly I rarely do. I usually avoid the topic (even on huge winning days) but some people know what I do and pry. In any case it's annoying but it's interesting viewing people's behavior on the concept of betting "a lot of money".

The thing is I shared those views of money myself a long time ago.

This thread has happened like 230232820 times before, but the people asking me if they can give me 20 and hand them 100 a week later are annoying. And I'm not close to making any kind of serious money either. I only made like $200 last month.

I get that one too..."But, how much did you lose?"...then I explain, the winnings take the losses into account.
Once I was explaining how much "time" or rake we pay at the casino. I was up about $2000 for the month after 110 hours...at 12 bucks an hour I said I had paid over $1200 in time...my buddy said.."so your only up 800 then, huh."

I told my old buddy from high school I lost a $11,000 pot....he was so, ZOMG YOU HAVE A PROBLEM that he called my parents and tried to host an "intervention."

My dad talked to my old friend and said, ummm....I don't think Jared cares too much about $11,000, bye.


(my friend didn't know at the time I owned any rentals..thought I just owned my own house)

took about a year, but now I'm 100% honest with my fiance and parents about my swings (future mother/father in law is a COMPLETELY different story). It's such a good stress reliever to talk to my fiance about my downswings. And the funny thing is, she NEVER gets tired of hearing a bad beat story, he actually asks for them.

i seriously hate this one.

how do you guys avoid telling people how much money you lose, when they see you play? like some of my friends (not that close) visit and they see me play and be like zomg so much money, is that forreal? I tell them that for every 100$, it's one real dollar, so they don't freak out, but not all of them are that dumb. my move?

Whenever i mention poker as my "job" around my friends I get a bunch of BS about how I "sit on my ass and have people give me money" while they are slaving away at low paying difficult jobs all day. So now whenever they call me and ask "how's it going?" I say something like "I just lost 3k in the last hour, how was your day at work?" They don't give me [censored] anymore.

Having to explain such things as expectation and variance to my parents OVER AND OVER AGAIN despite that I've had 1 losing month in 3 years. I'm fairly confident that I know what I'm doing by this point.

Actually the one that I really hate is "ZOMG!!! why don't you quite your job and play teh pohah????" because it makes me want to do just that...

During my last Vegas trip I was at the MGM Grand waiting for a seat in a 4/8 horse game that they had running. As I was standing by the rail two people came up behind me and had the following conversation.

Idiot #1: Hey you wanna play poker?
Idiot #2: No, I don't like playing poker in a casino because you aren't playing with real money.
Idiot #1: What do you mean?
Idiot #2: Well, see that bet that guy just made over there (points at some guy who just posted his $4 bb in the horse). He just bet like 2 thousand or whatever, but it's not really worth 2 thousand, they're just tournament chips.
