Boondock Saints

The rasterbation thread had so many of you nice young gentlemen gushing about this movie, that I decided to Netflix it.

Good lord, what dreck.

Awful, awful...awful.

Believe me, I know a little bit about movies, and I think I can say with some certainty that this film is pretty awful.

All style, and no substance can be OK.

But all bad style and no substance is just plain bad.

Dumb writing, bad acting...blecch.

Even poor Willem Defoe looked like an imbecile trying to pull something out of this mess. Her came off like a cross between Dennis Hopper's Frank Booth and Gary Oldman's cop character from The Professional, only, uh, gay and, well, overacting horribly.

I want to say that I did not enjoy this film, and I want someone to tell me what I missed.

Is it just that there were a lot of guns and blood and cool stuff like that? Is it that there was a quirky twist--the avenging angels thing? Is it that I am just too high tonight?

What am I missing? You guys generally don't steer me this wrong.

I think it's vastly overrated, but the social commentary is obviously what gives the film any value it has and that's why a lot of people like it. I figure you realize this but you didn't mention it in your OP. Maybe you are just too high [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

I actually like Defoe in the movie but every other acting job is horrific. I can't stand any scene with Rocco in it, he brings the movie down a ton. The action isn't very good and very unrealistic which would be bearable if many parts of the action didn't try to be realistic.

it is overrated by people who have heard of it.

i liked a lot when i saw it, but i had zero expectations. its social commentary is foolish at best. it's good for a laugh, to kill some time, or to drink a lot during - but expecting anything other than pure cheese will lead to disappointment.

I get the impression that the internet has taught early 20s males about the existence of this movie and that it must be the perfect demographic. I've heard of it, and heard good things, but the people that I have heard good things from made me very suspicious about the quality of the movie.

It's popular because it makes Irish-Americans look like heroes instead of wife-beating drunkards from the Somalia of Europe.

No, just raising the question of whether people should play God or take the law in to their own hands. I think the ending credits really hurt it with the retarded interviews, basically spelling it out for anyone who didn't get the meaning of the movie.

Re: Boondock Saints

I agree with Triumph. When I saw this movie first at the age of 12-13 I thought the social commentary was awesome. I realize now that it is an entertaining B-action movie and that is about it. The reason why a lot of people hate this movie is because people think it is a brilliant social commentary and massively overrate it.

Re: Boondock Saints

btw in case you are wondering i have seen it

the writer/director famously got an unheard of amount for the script because the studio wanted to rush something like "pulp fiction" to market

Ah yes--the closing credits...

Bad.

Of course, it gave them an excuse to put some black folks in.

Seriously, I just hated this movie. It was so cute and fun and poignant and artistic and heartfelt-yet-irreverent, and...

I hated it.

Even Morris sucked.

It's like Scarface, Anne Rice or Ayn Rand.

If you're 14 the first time you experience it, it's the coolest, deepest [censored] ever.

Otherwise,

i can almost guarantee a night following mason around would be more entertaining if only slightly less bloody...

Dude it's set in Boston what do you expect? I'm about to get my [censored] on too.

Like everyone said, it's awesome when you first see it when you're young. Then in college you watch it with buddies and enjoy all the guns, the melodramatic fight sequences, and Rocco saying, "you start getting excited [censored]!!!"

The worst part of the movie, undoubtedly, is when Dafoe wanders out of a bar drunk and starts following Rocco. The music playing is some cheesy techno. It sounds like the music they play at the movie theater when they're telling you about the snack bar and how you can't smoke or make phone calls. It's awful.

Go get Overnight next.

"A documentary on the rise and stumble of Troy Duffy, the bartender-cum-filmmaker who was swept up by Miramax's Harvey Weinstein to turn his script for The Boondock Saints into a feature film."

Troy Duffy seems to be a total prick and shoots himself in both feet, a hand, and then his mouth all in about 90 minutes. He gets totally blackballed from Hollywood for telling Harvey Weinstein, who basically pulls him from anonymity to Hollywood director in 6 months, to go [censored] himself.

It's really quite entertaining to watch, him being a total prick throughout and all.

For me the movie was sheer joy from beginning till end.
Even just thinking about it makes me cheer.
I don't know how old I was when I saw it, must have been somewhere around 46 I think.

Wouldn't have missed it for the world!

Re: Boondock Saints

I dunno, I enjoyed it. However I periodically enjoy watching cheesy action movies with lots of cursing, guns and general badassedness. It's not a spectacular movie but it's good for what it is imo.

I am curious what the Boondock Saints hating demographic is here... everyone who's hating on it (most of this board for whatever reason) do you enjoy movies like Assault on Precinct 13, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, The Fifth Element, etc? I mean not every movie has to be Goodfellas good to be entertaining, imo at least.

It is overrated... but so what? You can't get past yourself and enjoy it because it's overrated?
