Trop Pink Chip this past weekend
Played 3 sessions in the Pink chip game this Saturday & Sunday. Cliff notes: up a bit each session about 740 total. Tables ran from tight regulars to wild and wooley.
1st session - from about 12:301 Pm to 6:30Pm. Seated right away in the 1 seat, the game had been going only a down and 1/2 when I arrived. There was a couple of empty seats which were filled in short order. At least four of the people were older regulars. Its amazing even thought I only get down there every few months, how often you recognize people. The afternoon session played fairly tight. I played ABC poker and yo yo'ed up and down, managing to cash out up a rack. The game was fed steadily by a must a move game that started at about 2 o'clock. No memorable hands from this 1st session. There was one yong dutch guy guy that came over with about 2 racks from the must move. He played fairly tight, and I don't remember him in any hands before I left for dinner. After eating a nice dinner at wellingtons, I returned at about eight o'clock. The dutch guy now had a collection of chips that was spread far and wide. No one else was left from the earlier session. The must move had broken, and I was seated at the main game after about a half hour in seat 5. There was on Laggtard regular table captain raising most pots preflop. He would take down many pots, would bleed chips, suck out, and occasionally had good cards... I never knew what he had, and tightened up, and mostly became a calling station. I called him down a few times with one pair two pair, and he lost with air. He did catch me once when I caught trip queens and he slowed rolled me witht a boat. Whatever. The laggtard mostly bled chips. For some reason he moved two to my right (he had been in the 9 seat and me in the five. AFter that I had a much easier time. Early with him acting afterme, I could only go in with hands knowing he was going to pound me. With him acting before me, I could be looser / more aggressive when he folded pf. And when he was in, I could wait for premium hands. I managed to catch him a couple of times and cashed out up two racks at about 2:30am. Before I cashed out, the dutch boy cashed out with 6 full racks, a lady to my right that caught the laggtard a few times cashed out up 3 racks in about two hours. Some others left happy as well. The game became even more aggressive when another lag (although with manners) joined in the 10 seat. Overall except for some of the berrating, it was a very entertaining table. Sunday Morning, we opened a Pink chip table at 10:30am. Which stayed mostly full unll until I left at 12:30 to head home. Took down the 1st two nice pots, so I started up. slowly gave most of it back when people played back at me and I didn't catch. Sucked out big time on the following hand: Young asian in seat one had been fairly aggressive. I overcalled pf with 4c5c I don't remember if it was raised pf but we were 5 to the flop. Flop came 5 8 10 rainbow with one club out there. Asian opens, I don't read him strong and raise hoping if I can catch two pair I could be good, and that I might buy the button or and a free card on the turn (or even take it down with a bet). One caller behind me, and then tight button raises, so much for that plan. Now I figure he may have an overpair, or a straight draw (hoping no set, or I am just about drawing dead). But with so much in the pot now, I figure I have odds to call the small bet. Jc comes out on the turn, making straight looking good for draws, but it put 4 clubs on the board. checked to the button, he bets & I am the only caller ( I think I was getting about 7or8:1). Qc comes out on the river. Now even big slick made a straight. I lead out. he tanks. calls & goes ballistic when I show my flush. I don't thnk he cared so much about the flush, except for the fact that I raised with such crap on the flop. Hey, I got lucky, but I did enjoy the steam show. ANy way cashed out up less than a rack, but fun. FYI - many folks were complaining about the new management at the Trop which was sold last year. Many regulars let go (Hosts, waiters etc.), filthy bathrooms, not as good comps. I didn't enjoy wellington's as much as I had in the past, but I am not sure that was from the changes. Either way, most people are not excited about the changes at the trop. |
Re: Trop Pink Chip this past weekend
Excellent report.
I have yet to get in to the pink chip game. The last time I was in AC it broke 15 minutes before I got there, put my name on the list to start it again, played 3/6 O8 for four hours until I had to leave for dinner. It gets called while I'm cashing out. I eat dinner, go mini golfing, hang out with family until 10pm, come back and the dumb thing has broken again. I've got a beach house for a week starting on the 11th so come hell or high water, I'm playing in that damn game. |

Those bathrooms have been really hideous last three times I was there. I mean it was like pure [censored] smell last time.

What is a pink chip game? [/ QUOTE ] It's a unique 7.50/15 game at the Trop in AC. They use $2.50 chips, which are pink. It plays like a 3/6 game really, since it uses the same chip structure. |

Pink chips are from the blackjack tables, having to pay 3:2 on $5 bets and all. |
Re: Trop Pink Chip this past weekend
I have always heard it was extremely aggressive as well, but have never found it that was myself. I was just there on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. For the most part it was pretty loose, but not particularly aggressive or crazy.

I am asking a serious question, not trying to put down the trop or anything. Why do you guys not play at the Borgata? It seems to me that there are always more people in their room and higher limits plus nicer atmosphere. I mean why do people play at other casinos? The only thing that comes to mind is softer competition, but wouldnt the weaker players float towards the name recognition of the borg?

Maybe they have had a bad experience at Borgata, or are treated better at another casino - maybe they know the floor or brush who can get them higher up the waiting list during peak times, or can add to the actual time they played, increasing comps. Some prefer to play on the boardwalk, where there are 7 poker rooms within walking distance instead of being secluded in the Marina, where you need to drive from one casino to another. I have been going to Atlantic City regularly now (about once a month) and I have always stayed/played at the boardwalk casinos. Last week, after almost 2 years, I made my first trip to Borgata. The casino was very nice and huge. I got lost a couple of times trying to find a restroom. Although the Borgata poker room is nice and large, I prefer the Showboat poker room. Although it is smaller, I enjoy the "theme" of the room. After playing at Showboat, I can easily walk to Trump Taj Mahal, instead of having to hop in my car and negotiate with city traffic. |

Re: Trop Pink Chip this past weekend
I do prefer the Borgata, but this trip I played at the Trop because my girlfriend was with me. She needs things to do while I play poker, like go to the beach. Also, the pink chip game was a lot less aggressive than the Borgata 10/20, which made for a more relaxing trip for me as well.
I like hanging around the boardwalk too, it is nice for a walk when you need a break from poker. If Borgata was on the beach/boardwalk it would be pretty ideal though. |
Re: Trop Pink Chip this past weekend
Well I understand the atmosphere comments and obviously knowing the floor is a huge boon, but how about from a purely poker talent perspective? I got my start when I was 20 going to college in philly and playing at the Trop on the weekends when I could. However, when I switched from NL to limit I found that the trop never had enough games going and someone suggested the Borg. My point is that the Borg attracts the touristy types plus has a lot more games going meaning there are more games to play and easier to move around from a tough table.
Also, I have another semi related question. Is the best strategy to play only at one casino rather than move around? I feel if you play at one place, you log all your time there and advance more quickly up the comp chain, rather then spreading your time around and having little to no comps due to lack of time. |

There are many great players in AC that will only play at the Trop and Taj. Trop has some pretty good cash games if you go the right day. I have had a few great runs over there. Same with the Taj. Honestly, I also dont think the atmosphere at the Borgata is that great...its just a big open room.....nothing special. |

[/ QUOTE ] I like the Borgata, I usually play 6-12 there, and tourney's. But I play the trop about half the time. I was with slot folks that got comped suite meals etc. so the choice was easy. As for the table texture, I've found it runs the gamut so three different textures this last weekend, and Saturday night it was hyper loose aggressive except for me and a few others. It only takes 2-3 crazies to make sick table. I picked my spots but others had wild variance. The pink chip can be good times - like the 5 - 10 kill at foxwoods - it does vary from tight to hyper. |
Re: Trop Pink Chip this past weekend
I play regularly at Borg, and it's my go-to room in AC in general. That said, I like playing at Taj a lot as well - I go where the action is frankly also. If you're playing 20-40, the Taj game is simply much better. If a hot waitress means more to you than a bunch of extra money, then hey, go to Borg to play 20. But the game is softer at Taj. Also, sometimes I like to play stud - Taj has a bunch of 20-40 to 40-80 stud that Borg doesn't offer. In addition, Taj is brighter, they got new chips, tables, chairs and plasmas viewable from everywhere (esp. the high limit pit).
Of course, if you want to play 40-80 and higher hold em in AC, Borg is you're only option (same with 75 stud and higher) which is why I usually head that way. But, especially if you're a local, you should explore the other rooms. Sometimes you'll be surprised at what you find and enjoy the change of scenery (esp. if you're running bad). Jeff |

That game runs inconsistently, so I had to go back to the Trop. I like the Trop game selection, and lousy players. Yeah, there's a lot of locals, but they're not really good. I've had awesome runs at Trop & Taj too, but I think the Borg stole away the under-35 "poker boom" crowd/fish from the Taj. So, the amount of solid players, local rocks, & degenerates is higher now. Borg has it's pluses (nice atmosphere, bottled beer/top shelf drinks, lots of 1/2 & 2/5 NL, high limit HE & 7CS, lots of SNG's, lots of eye candy, waitresses, etc..). But, the douche-factor there is MUCH higher than any other AC room, especially on weekends. That's why I tend to avoid that room in the summer months. |

Re: Trop Pink Chip this past weekend
What about the arguement for comp points. Wouldnt playing at one specific room consolidate all your time and reward you with better comps rather then splitting your time between two places?

I've got a players card for every room, no idea what I have on most of them, but it all spends the same. Comps generally are terrible for poker, that doesn't play into my decision much, if at all. |

Borg comps are $1/hour for most games, and $2 for high limit. Everything runs off the card.
Agree about the lighting. And the pros, well that's a fact of life the higher you go. |

I just found out that i am 100 FREAKIN points shy of retaining my black card at the borg...can you [censored] believe that. I called and asked for an extension but they are gay, so i guess now I have reason to check out the other casinos. Ill definetley stop by the trop and taj.

Yes, it would be worth it to call today. |

Um, "100 friggin points" is 100 hours at lower limits or 50 hours at mid limits. That's a fair amount.
