Upcoming Book by Tommy Angelo: \"Elements of Poker\"

I ran across this at his website:

[ QUOTE ]
Today is May 24, 2007. I am writing a book right called "Elements of Poker." I expect it to be available (here and at Amazon) in August or September of 2007. The material in the book is closely aligned with my coaching program.

Anybody know any more?

Wow, I'm really looking forward to this.
The opportunity to get some of Tommy's coaching-type insights for only $20 or $30 or however much this book is going to cost. Awesome.
This isn't a 2+2 publication I gather.

skillzilla 07-02-2007 02:32 AM

Re: Upcoming Book by Tommy Angelo: \"Elements of Poker\"

why not a 2+2 publication

MicroBob 07-02-2007 03:29 AM

Re: Upcoming Book by Tommy Angelo: \"Elements of Poker\"

I'm guessing it isn't because I don't recall Mason mentioning it among their upcoming publications.
If it actually is a 2+2 publication than I apologize for my error.

For those of us that aren't really in the know about Tommy Angleo, these short comments are a little confusing.

Am I getting leveled or are you guys really advocating anything he writes?

7n7 - The enthusiasm expressed in this thread is almost certainly 100% genuine. No leveling is taking place.

Is it actually gonna contain strategy, or just a bunch of psychological stuff for people who lack discipline?

I have no idea what the answer to this question is, but the question itself struck me as bad, at least as I interpret it. Then again I may be reading way too much into it, so I'll explain.

The typical poker strategy books are of the cookbook type. (Raise this starting hand in this situation, etc.) Those that are worthwhile give you a good foundation to build on, a default approach. Others (ie NLT&P or Mathmatics of Poker) take a more general approach. These teach you how to figure out the exceptions to the default approach and are mathmatically based.

The poker psychology books discuss your psychology as well as you opponent's. I could argue against your generalization that they would only benefit those "who lack disipline," but if you want to look at it that way that's fine.

I think there is potentially a gap between these two. They're interrelated, but most books explore one or the other, not the relationships between the two.

I have no idea about the contents of Angelo's book, however his article on "reciprocality" mentioned earlier in this thread sits in this middle ground between the two as I envision it. I don't think the article discusses anything revolutionary if you break it down to the elemental level, but the way he ties everything together is. If his book is even close to as well done and well thought out as this article I don't think it matters whether it is thought of as psychology or strategy, it's bound to be valuable.

QFT

I've read Reciprocality probably a half dozen times and go back to it at least every couple of months. It's like a breath of fresh air and I get something from it every single time I read it. Can't wait for the new book.

Does QFT translate to "Quite f'n true"?

dubiousdrift 07-05-2007 06:17 PM

Re: Upcoming Book by Tommy Angelo: \"Elements of Poker\"

I like the Wikipedia definition: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QFT)

"QFT", internet slang meaning "quoted for truth". This term applies on forums and posting boards where users can edit their posts, thus the QFT holds the poster to their original statement. It is also used to express agreement with a previous poster's statement and validate its veracity. Other variations include "quoted for truthiness" and "quite [censored] true".

Reciprocality is a poker-specific adaptation of a very fundamental concept, but one that is quite often overlooked in poker, and in life:

Essentially it's that the more creative mind will emerge ahead in the long-run.

We can look at reciprocality as the coincidence of the two most important theoretical constructs of poker:

Theorem 1: creativity ultimately trumps mechanistic thinking

Theorem 2: Sklansky's fundamental theorem of poker (FTOP): any time a player plays a hand differently than it should be played if the opponent's cards were visible, the player loses value (as measured against the theoretical maximum value of the hand if it were played probabalistically optimally with opponent's cards known at all times)

Reciprocality is the application of creativity to induce an opponent into making plays that move the opponent further and further to the wrong side of FTOP.

I don't recall if he mentioned the publisher. He said it's still a few MONTHS off.

I thought it was interesting that he's thinking of doing an audiobook version. There is an audio preview available here:
