Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, Stardust, Afro Mystik, and any other Deep, Funky, or Disco House you can find. Ishkur's guide (already linked above) is actually a really good place to find some cool stuff.

yeah it actually is. i recommend that you click on "house" on the left, then click on "deep". that will give you a selection of tracks to listen to that is representative of the style of "house music" that i think is best...

if you like it, you can click the links below to listen to a deep house internet radio station that will introduce you to a lot more house music.

Herbert - Leave Me Now

I like that song a lot. Don't randomly download his stuff though, some of it is very weird indeed (e.g, he has made a concept album). Also The Audience and Birds of a Feather are good from him.

And while I'm on this particular sub-genre, Plej - You, also good.

I always mix up these electronica sub-genres; is Alice DeeJay, The Venga Boys, or Sylver House music? More dance oriented I'm assuming

Eh, the genres overlap. Those bands are kinda more on the crappy Euro-pop side of stuff though.

Luomo is fantastic; his track 'Tessio' is incredible, emotionally-charged:

Also the compilation Digital Disco

This stuff falls within the subgenre "click house".

I have no idea who Sylver are, but I agree that the former two are less dance music and more pop music. If I disregard that, the only Alice DeeJay track I know would be trance rather than house. I guess if you want house tracks that did well in the charts, you'd have to look to daft punk, that "music sounds better with you" song, or spiller/groovejet, if I have that name right... The one with ms. squarejaw in.

It's not really House music maybe but anything by BT or Tiesto is ridic amazing IMO. Also Paul Van Dyke is pretty sweet. Although I'd describe them as epic trance....not nec house.

OP: "somebody who has NEVER listened to it before"

Highly likely OP doesn't know what he is asking about. Some people use the term 'House' like other people use the term 'Techno' - thinking it means electronic music generically, not that it is actually a specific genre.

FWIW, I think Tiesto is so 2001.

Thanks man, that's exactly what I was attempted to do. I guess I should have been more clear that what I was recommending was trance instead of house. Oh wait, I did that didn't I?

But yah, to most ppl any sort of electronica stuff that gets played in a club seems like the exact same genre.

Re: Recommend house music to somebody who has NEVER listened to it bef

If you don't consider Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, or Groove Armada as House Music, then what do you think House music is? Daft Punk is responsible for funky house coming out of obscurity and into the mainstream in the 90's. Granted, these groups may not sound the same as "brilliant" groups like Alice Deejay or the Venga Boys, but that doesn't mean that they aren't House.

Personally, I would say that the Venga Boys is more trance than House, although many would disagree since they clearly do incorporate some House elements in their music. What differentiates House from Trance is NOT the drumbeat, which is what I think confuses most people. House simply sounds different than trance. Trance is, for the most part, melody-driven. The Venga-Boys' "Let's get this Party Started" or "Up and Down" (which sound EXACTLY the same to me) is built around the melody. On the other hand, the most important factors in most House music is the bass and the drums. Listen to "Around the World" by Daft Punk, which I would consider to be an archetypal house track, and you can hear what I am saying.

honestly, find any of the CDs in the Global Underground series of mixes and you'll be off to a good start.

house music isn't really like rock where you can say "hey this is a good song." there's sooo many mixes and remixes that unless you really want to take the time to track down new stuff every day it's much easier to find a DJ you like and then just find some of his sets.

plus, half the fun of electronic music is hearing a sick mix (as in song a is playing and the dj mixes it with the next track to transition from one to the other). if you just get a bunch of tracks then you'll never hear that half. at first it will all sound the same but if you keep up with new sets and new tracks you'll recognize the track you heard last week and start to hear the transitions and that's when it gets really fun.

it's actually a pretty deep scene once you get into it. it's amazing how fast tracks explode then disappear. it can take one week for a track to be made, get to the DJs, and have everyone EXPECT to hear that track when they go out on friday night. next week, all the DJs are playing a remix of the track. week three, the track is gone, never to be heard again.

if you're not going out to clubs things will move a little slower, but really, that's the fun part of electronic music.

so find some mixes that you like (DJs will stick to the same styles of tracks) then find some other DJs that are similar then find out when one of them is playing naer oyu and go see them.

oh yeah, i think david guetta (http://www.davidguetta.com maybe?) has a free weekly podcast. from what i remember it was pretty good and would be very accessible for someone new to the genre, without being overly commercial and/or 10 years old.

one final note, i haven't listened to house music in a while and was never really that into it, so the guys i mentioned might not be dropping the hottest tracks, so if you like what you hear spend some time to go find new stuff. the music is always changing and that's what makes it so great.

House music suggestions:

JUSTICE!!! (if you haven't heard their album 'cross' yet, you're missing out.
Deep Dish
Doc Martin
Danny Tenaglia
Roger Sanchez
Erick Morillo
Satoshi Tomaii
Fatboy Slim
Dj Dan
Chemical Brothers (I'm only throwing them in here because they have a GREAT new album out)
David Morales
Danny Howells
Desyn Masiello
Donald Glaude

I rarely listen to electronic/dance music any more, so some of those names might not have many new mixes out since 03-04 when I fell off the dance music scene.
