Re: Kimbo Slice vs. Ray Mercer Fight *VIDEO*

In all honesty, pretty pathetic. I'm glad Slice took some time out to learn some minimal grappling skills, but this was pretty much a set up. Mercer wasn't even a true contender during his hayday, and yet, boxingwise, I think he could have taken Kimbo.

Mercer has long since seen his days as a respectable boxer, and Kimbo has the desire to further a career made out street fighting videos on the internet.

Kimbo will enjoy some press and excitement until he works his way into the real levels of MMA, and still due to knockout power and good amateur level boxing skills has the power to impress. Does he have a legit spot in either of the sports, IMHO no, but the fanfare will be fun.

Wow, after attempting to edit that, and realizing how drunk I am, I'm gonna have to let it slide. Sorry folks, the meaning's there, but it got muddled.

Man. That was horrible.

I will say that if Kimbo continues the path he is going down he could be a decent fighter. Though like Tommy Morrison I would prefer if his "MMA" (I know Kimbo has fought in other fights but they were not MMA in the least bit) debut was actually against an MMA fighter.

If not, I hope this goes a little bit toward proving the point that if you are just a boxer you will get worked in an MMA fight even against a regular opponent.

lolol that was so terrible... there was a 13 year difference between the two. put me in the octagon with a 7 year old and i'll kick the crap out of him just like kimbo did.

take kimbo vs any of the semifinalists in the ultimate fighter and he'd get pwned

Wow, these announcers are so bad it almost makes me thankful that Goldberg works the UFC fights.

And to poster who was talking about the 13 year age difference, it's a factor, but not what ultimately decides a fight. Look at Couture vs. Sylvia.

Jesus, Kimbo is tiny relative to how he looks in the InTheVIP vids.

I'm one of the biggest proponents of mixed martial artist > straight boxer, but this fight doesn't prove anything. You take an old, out of shape, unmotivated ex-boxer and throw him in with a hungry, trained (by Bas Rutten), and more or less in his prime fighter. Of course Kimbo was going to take this fight.

I think Randy is more of the exception rather than the rule.

Considering that Kimbo was completely dominating Ray Mercer as a stand-up striker, the point wasn't quite made.

Re: Kimbo Slice vs. Ray Mercer Fight *VIDEO*

Kimbo might actually have a semi-decent future. The key is his wrestling.

He doesn't have to become a huge slick jiu-jitsu master, as long as he can do basic things like hold guard, hold the top position, etc. He looks like he can do these basic things given that he could finish a guillotine (on an opponent who had no idea what it was, i'm sure).

If he can learn good wrestling skills, I can see him playing the standup/GnP game with a little bit of effectiveness.

Now obv. wrestling a UFC heavweight to the ground is much harder than wrestling a 48 year old boxer to the ground, but at the very least, kimbo has a small chance to succeed.

Re: Kimbo Slice vs. Ray Mercer Fight *VIDEO*

Is Kimbo really 33 or whatever? He looks a lot older. It looks like he put in a lot of work getting into shape though.

Mercer looked very out of shape. I think some boxers would do very well in MMA or any other fight (would have been more true when $ in boxing was so much bigger than any other kind of combat sport) but you can sometimes get away with being slow on your feet if you are a powerful heavyweight boxer, but obviously can't as an MMA fighter. Covering up and weathering the storm was just no good when you can be tackled and punched.

Blarg 06-24-2007 02:16 PM

Re: Kimbo Slice vs. Ray Mercer Fight *VIDEO*

Exactly. Covering up just made taking him to the ground a foregone conclusion. That didn't play to his strengths at all.

But he also seemed out of his depth in the striking. Kimbo was landing knees on him too, and he was answering with nothing.

Pretty pathetic. Then again, Mercer is 46 and hasn't been a boxer in his prime in a long time. I'm not sure there are a lot of washed up 46 year olds who would do any better.

How is he going to get the right training? He's 33. By the time he got enough training to become excellent in any one area (punching, kicking, clinching, submissions) he'll be 45 years old. ALL of the good MMA fighters have a very strong background in at least one area of fighting, and typically have a pretty good background in other areas.

IMO, he'll never reach a point where he becomes a favorite over good fighters, or even lower weight division fighters. I think Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, GSP, BJ Penn, Karo Parisyan, Jens Pulver, etc. would do extremely bad things to him.

Re: Kimbo Slice vs. Ray Mercer Fight *VIDEO*

kimbo has what appears to be a high threshold for pain, and he's also built like a guy on roids and i suspect he isn't.

what makes him good imo, is something that cant be taught: a really sick amount of desire. when i see kimbo fight, i see a guy who's fighting not only another person, but he's fighting his own demons. if i had to guess, i'd say kimbo didnt have a nice childhood and probably has lived a really hard life. that's something you can't learn or teach, and it's something that can make a person extremely dangerous, like kimbo.

if he is trainable, i think he could make his way to the top of MMA fighting.

Perfectly executed show by Kimbo's handlers. He takes on a name guy and gets maximum exposure while minimizing risk. I like Kimbo and I think he's a fun story. I haven't seen it but I heard the hype after the match involved Tank Abbot calling him out. Tank would be the perfect next opponent for Kimbo.

Isn't tank getting ancient and stuff now? Wouldn't this just be the same situation all over again (aging name guy comes in to get murdered?)

Just checked wikipedia. Tank is 42, and would be a heavy underdog. He was 2-4 in his last 6 fights BEFORE going to professional wrestling in 1998. In 2003, when he attempted a comeback, he lost in three UFC events in a row, and then went 1-3 in lower level promotions. and in that 1-6 record he has been KO'd or submitted in the first round 6 times. Tank is pretty much dead on arrival now.

All of which is exactly why he's a perfect fight for Kimbo.
