HDTV for my dorm room??

I am going to be a sophomore at UCSD next year living in the on-campus apartments. I really want a LCD or Plasma TV in my room but I'm not sure how big it should be, how I should set it up, and if I am allowed to hang it on the wall. Any suggestions?

Is this for a common room or a bedroom? I would assume it depends largely on the dimensions of the room... so that would be very important. Do you play on Stars - the LCDs/plasmas in the VIP store seen like decent deals

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

i suggest that you get some non lazy aptmates and that they'll lock your front door, otherwise it's gonna get jacked.

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

i had a 42' tv in my dorm room (one-room double), my room was always unlocked and often left with the door open, and i never once worried about it getting jacked. it's just too heavy and people would notice. and I guess I trusted everyone in my dorm.

and d0nkaments, you could have just asked me =).

How big is your room? I've got a 45" Sharp Aquos, a 32" Vizo and a 23" Philliips in my room all lined up on one wall side by side with my computer and desk next to them.... flat panels are really space efficient, just make sure you position your room effectively so that lots of people can watch!

Get at least a 32, imho. The Samsung 32 inch would be perfect!

agreed, this is an awesome TV especially if you're a gamer. Plus it's one of the only 32 inch hdtv's to offer 1080.

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

Hmm, your room looks kind of skinny. (is that the wall on the right side?) You could mount it on one of those metallic arms so it can rotate, and put it in an upper corner above your bed?

thanks guys. im gonna visit bestbuy and check them out right now. I move back into my apartment in 3 months. do you think its worth it to buy it now or in 3 months? In other words, does the price drop quickly or not really?

thanks again guys.

this is KINDA what my room looks like. it is gonna be a little wider but not as long (overall dimensions are bigger, though). I was thinking of buying a file cabinet or something to put against the window on the right side and put it on top of that?

thanks.

I'd suggest buying a tv online from a place like tiger direct and not best buy. I was looking at tvs at best buy and saw a couple that were $200 or so more than what you could get them for online.

d0nkaments 06-23-2007 02:55 PM

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

PokeyReese,

good point. i'm gonna go take a look at them at a local retail store, memorize the model, and buy it online for the lowest price.

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

lol.

i've seen bruin's TV - it's nice but does take up a lot of space - it was underneath the lofted bed, right bruin?. with a futon underneath the other bed? sweet setup but i think the 32" size would be better for donkaments, especially if he can't loft the bed.

edit: as far as mounting goes, just find out if you're allowed to put big holes in the walls. if so, that's def the way to go. my guess is you wouldn't be allowed to, and in that case just figure it out once you move in - no sense worrying about it now. i have to agree with not over-thinking things at this point.

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

main thing is i won't have a car down in san diego next year so i would most likely have to buy it now and move it down to san diego.

i wonder how much UCSD would charge me if i DID put holes in the walls.. if its < 100 i would prob. just do that rofl

bruin 06-23-2007 04:35 PM

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

def. dont put holes in the wall.

housing will try to [censored] you over as much as possible. on a serious note, just find a good TV stand, re-arrange the room so you have some more space and everything will work.

also, i recommend '32, as everyone else. '42 can work but it depends on the room.

also-- in the first place, I dont think getting a nice/big TV is worth it unless you are going to be watching a lot of sports.

when it's not college football or basketball season, i find my TV to be kind of a waste. I'd rather do more fun and productive things than watch random TV. although i admit that having a nice TV is awesome when u wanna watch movies. just my two cents.

The primary reason for me getting this TV is to play super smash brawl on my wii

Also, to watch movies in HD obv.

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

Samsung LCD=sweetness. awsome viewing angle/picture. Can find better prices online, but if your donk like most of america and buy it retail, do not get the service plan they will offer you. Definitely not worth it. (current bestbuy employee). Also don't get the crappy superexpensive monster cables.

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

Does brand really matter much? I visited bestbuy last night and I saw a 32" westinghouse and insignia(?) both onsale for 599.99

does 1080p and 720p really make a diff? i dont know too much.

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

I got a 26" Aquos because I thought anything bigger would be too big for a dorm room. This turned out to be false, and while I love my TV, I should have gotten a 32" or 36" at least. They don't take up much space at all.

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

I have finally decided on one of the following 32" LCD HDTVs:

Toshiba REGZA 32HL67:
http://i9.tinypic.com/62edw0l.jpg

Samsung LN-S3251D:
http://i14.tinypic.com/5xp8jex.jpg

Samsung-LNT-3253H:
http://i17.tinypic.com/6g1qd8w.jpg

All of these TV's are ~900 or less when onsale, which is within my budget range. I am primarily leaning towards the last two (Samsungs), preferrably getting the 3rd because it was slightly better "specs," however, if the price differs too much I will be content with the 2nd.

A major problem I was having was, does UCSD even HAVE Hi-Def?? I have no clue how that works, for I am not too tech-savvy. Anyways, thanks for all the input again, and I will be sure to post a picture of my final decision and a happy me.

P.S. This stand is nice for a dorm room, no?
http://i10.tinypic.com/66ot9on.jpg

P.P.S. WOW THIS ONE IS SO MUCH NICER:
http://i17.tinypic.com/67rhvfm.jpg

P.P.P.S. WHERE CAN I BUY ONE OF THESE STANDS??

i doubt a college dorm is going to have HDTV ready ... u will prop need to find who the cable company is and ask them to run you a new line and u will need an HDTV tuner box witch they should provide for you ... but i doubt the university is going to let them run an extra line up to your room ... so prob no HD for j000

did you go ROBUSTO already? details

Re: HDTV for my dorm room??

I'm back!

No, not robusto yet. I've actually been running horribly these past few weeks. HORRIBLY. So still working on the poker aspect of that.

I got a full-time job/internship working at an investment banking firm in downtown LA, so making pretty good monies with that.

All that side, I've been wanting to get HDTV for my dorm room next year anyways.

Any idea if UCSD can even receive HDTV? No idea how this works.

My dorm had HD, it probably depends how recently your dorms were wired.
