Fezzik and the dude from LVA came up with a plan to charge $20 a month for access to the forum and to Fezzik's picks during the NFL season. They said it was to help "weed out" the board fodder. Everyone flipped out and accused Fezzik of turning tout (which he said he would not do). Fezzik got butt hurt and closed the board citing that "it's just not worth his time dealing with all the [censored] on the board".

when they announced the plan, i posted early in the thread with a one word response of "whatever", which basically meant, i would pay the $20, and that it was not a big deal because the forum was so valuable to me. i posted simply because i knew the thread would be huge and it is fun to respond early in a thread that is huge.

i check back later and see my response was deleted.

fez seems like a great guy but there were enough negative comments on the site that he somehow got totally confused about how people felt, and made a rash decision that i think he and everyone else will look back on as a mistake.

The whole thing was bizarre. I wasn't going to pay because I figured many of the forums valuable assets would just go elsewhere. You can't really make people pay when so many others contribute just as much value or more than the guy who runs the site.

Making people pay to post is the opposite of community building.

That's really the problem. Get some people that have too much free time to moderate the forum for free (like a lot of good forums have) and you've got your solution.

I'll host a damn forum for free. It's really not all that costly per month, and even if you've never run an internet business before it won't take you long to find ways of monetizing the site.

who are we to complain? value it as a binary option, if you perceive the ability to post + getting his picks in a timely fashion is >= 100$ a year, you pay. otherwise, don't pay..

jesus christ, what's so hard? if your neighbor invited you to his pool party every weekend for free beers + barbecue. then one day he says sorry, i can't afford to throw these parties for free anymore b/c the i foot the bill for all the drink and food by myself and it's killing me, so if you're going to come, you must pay an admission fee.. what are you going to do? hold your breath until you turn blue?

I don't care what Fezzik does with his board either but he should have known that he was going to get the reaction that he did. You're not exactly the beacon of great social interaction yourself so I wouldn't expect you to understand.

"I am not paying to post on a forum and I don't bet Fezzik's picks so I won't be subscribing."

If I was a millionaire I wouldn't expect everyone to kiss my ass. I'd like to be held accountable for my actions just like anyone else.

fyi, i don't care if you criticize steve, it's not my fight.. but at least have a legit criticism/complaint... not some vindicative rubbing of salt into wounds..

fezz isn't perfect, his astronomical ego size and recent interactions w/ dgordon are evidences of that.. however criticizing the approach he took to his own website/property when he shared so much +ev thoughts freely w/ the public makes you look far more petty than the target of your attack

here's an OBJECTIVE approach to starting a thread, "it's a shame that fezz decided to close his site, i enjoyed the discussions and will miss the interactions there"

here's a SUBJECTIVE approach, "fezz is childish brat who can't handle the bashing, what a loser/crybaby..etc"

if you can't tell the difference between the 2 approaches, then we have nothing further to discuss

I think it's a reasonable criticism to say he handled the situation poorly (aka took his ball and went home). He made a decision, people didn't like it, so he quit. Among the usual bashers there was lots of respected members giving valid criticism. I'm not a Fezz basher by any means. If you look back at my posts you'd see that. I think you are being melodramatic about the whole thing. In other words, WE MOVE ON.
