Nevada - most dangerous state in the U.S!!??
(mods, I thought B&M would apply here, since there are a handful of aspiring B&M pros)
I was perusing the net on living conditions in Las Vegas and good places to live and was stunned that Nevada was the most dangerous state in the US to live in. I would have thought NJ, NY, CA, and Michigan rank higher on the danger scale. (FWIW- 1. Nevada 2. Louisiana 3. New Mexico 4. Arizona, 5. Maryland) I can't remember ever being afraid in the three times I've been to LV. I'll admit, there's a lot of bums trolling around asking for change, but I've always thought they're harmless. Your sources have to be wrong. I believe St. Louis is the worst and so is Washington DC.
Im in chicago and once a bum asked for a .25 when i was on the way to the Bulls game taking local. Ghetto area on West Side. I give him a .25 and hes like i want .50 more. My friends r like the light is green, so i floored it almost taking the arm off cuz he wuldnt take it out of the window. Then his ass drops the change on the ground b/c i took off |

The west side of Chicago (i used to live within walking distance of the area the one poster described at Grand & May) is also pretty dangerous if you don't know your way around or you look like a target (a suburban kid driving a nice car for instance). I have a couple of crazy stories but for the most part as long as you don't have your head up your bum you'll be fine. |
Re: Nevada - most dangerous state in the U.S!!??
LOL@ 5 YR Old bully..
About the only thing a bum did to me was wash my windows while pumping gas. The windows were pretty dirty from the long drive, and he said he was doing it for a living so I said sure go ahead. I gave him 50 cents and he asked for more and I said that's all I have. I get in the car and the bum hardly even cleaned them!!! I'm guessing the reason why states like Nevada and Arizona rank so high is because almost all of its population harbors in metro areas and you don't have quaint little cities like Mayberry.. |

Re: Nevada - most dangerous state in the U.S!!??
If something said Nevada was the most dangerous state, with no other context, it might not even be talking about crime.
Could even be something related to radiation from nuclear tests and/or nuclear waste storage. You really need to look at violent crime statistics by city, if that is what you are worried about. |

You stopped your car, opened your window to give change to a bum? I didn't know people did this. How old is this story? Most Dangerous States, 2006
[ QUOTE ] Methodology: To determine the most dangerous states, rates for six crime categories—murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft—are compared to the national average for a given crime category. [/ QUOTE ] Press Release [ QUOTE ] LAWRENCE, KS — Nevada today repeated its designation as the nation’s most dangerous state. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Sagebrush State has earned this designation. The announcement was made in Crime State Rankings 2007, an annual reference book published by Morgan Quitno Press, a Lawrence, Kansas-based independent research and publishing company. At the opposite end of the rankings scale, North Dakota repeats as the nation’s safest state, an honor it has held for the 10th time in the 14 years of the award. . "The story for Nevada remains the same as in previous years,” said Scott Morgan, President of Morgan Quitno Press. “As a rapidly growing state, it struggles with crime and other problems. It has some of the highest murder, robbery and motor vehicle theft rates in the country.” [/ QUOTE ] Safest and Most Dangerous U.S. Cities, 2006 [ QUOTE ] NOTE: Cities with 75,000+ population. The rankings are based on a city's rate for six crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft. [/ QUOTE ] Oddly enough, in spite of Nevada's most dangerous state ranking, Las Vegas is not in the top 20 most dangerous cities. St. Louis most dangerous U.S. city (2005) |
Re: Nevada - most dangerous state in the U.S!!??
I suspect that this is at least somewhat a statistical anomoly.
This statistics by state is per capita, and let's remember that a very high % of people in Nevada live in two urban areas - Las Vegas and Reno. Crime is higher in big cities and there is not alot of population in the rural areas to "even out" the numbers. Also car theft is really high here and that is included on that survey - I would rather live in a place higher in car theft than murder, can't really equate the two. FWIW, I lived in St.Louis for 8 years before living in Vegas, and I feel much much safer here. |
Re: Nevada - most dangerous state in the U.S!!??
Ive seen CSI - as much as Grissom and the team (prior being split up) try, they will never stop the fact there are two murders every week in weird and odd circumstances - luckily they solve every crime, sooner or later.

Those who are figuring out that such a huge percentage of Nevada's population is confined to just 2 cities whereas other states have a larger population to 'even out' the numbers are exactly right imo.
St. Louis and East St. Louis have pretty dangerous areas. But the rest of Missouri and Illinois brings down the overall 'dangerous' statistic for the whole state. Also, as mentioned earlier, St. Louis and Washington D.C. are not states. At least I'm pretty sure they aren't anyway. |

Of course your president will bail out the families of the said terrorists living on american soil. Very sad fact of life.. [/ QUOTE ] wtf??!! [/ QUOTE ] This Canadian just understands statistics. What're the chances of dying from a terrorist attack in the US? Well, the only major events we have are 9/11 and OKC. 2000 folks perished in the last ~15 years that terrorism has been a major threat. Compare that to how many folks have died from violence or drunk drivers. He's right...When visiting the US his chances of dying at the hands of some random American are much higher than the chances of dying from an act of terrorism. 'Course it works the other way, too. FAR more US citizens die at the hands of Canadians every year than die from acts of terrorism while visiting Canada. Basically it's a nearly meaningless statement. Perhaps he was trying to make a statement about violence in the US, but mostly he ended up making a statement about the lack of terrorism in the US. As for bailing out the families... uhhhh...we have this odd notion here in the US that family members are not responsible for the actions of others in their family. I am not by brother's keeper. Perhaps they do things differently in Canadia? If I kill someone in Canadia, do y'all jail my siblings and my parents, too? |

[/ QUOTE ] a few random thoughts: I recall reading a few months back that rates of violent crime in the UK and some other European countries are higher than the USA. If you round out the 9-11 victims to 3,000 and our population to 300,000,000, then 1 in 100,000 Americans was killed on 9-11. That's not "one in a billion." Have you actually looked at Canada's immigration policy? It seems Canada is letting in anyone who says “please,” regardless of what support for terrorism/Islamofacism they have. Many Canadians recoil at our gun rights here. At least I still have the right to defend myself from attack in most jurisdictions here by using a handgun. I guess in Canada, as long as the attacker(s) has the upper hand, it would be better for the resident there to die or be raped or whatever than for him (her) to be able to defend himself with a common defense tool. The handgun can equalize the situation so that the predators won’t be in a situation where they know that they will always have the upper hand. Oh by the way, Canada has been able to have an increasingly smaller amount of GDP spent on national defense because they could depend on what we’re spending on defense. It directly benefits your standard of living. |
Re: Nevada - most dangerous state in the U.S!!??
I prefer a few statistics rather than NRA propaganda.
Murders per million people per annum: 43 United States 15 Canada 14 United Kingdom 5 Japan Source: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cr...ers-per-capita The UK is one of the worst countries in the developed world for theft but the US has been the undisputed #1 for murders in the developed world for many decades. |

I live in Los Angeles and visit Vegas once a month and have done so for the past 7-8 years. I have been in the very worst parts of both cities, as well as the middle class areas, the blue collar areas, and the nice areas. By far Los Angeles is more dangerous. The reasons are: 1.) The worst areas are equally as dangerous. But the worst area of Los Angeles is huge. This is roughly the area bounded by the 10 Fwy to the north, the city limits to the east, ~La Brea Bl to the west, and the 105 fwy to the south. By contrast, the worst parts of N. Las Vegas is primarily confined to individual apartment complexes and does not spill out several miles. The area ~ behind the Sahara down to Maryland is not that large an area. 2.) Many middle class and lower middle class/blue collar areas of Los Angeles are also filled with crime. Places like Van Nuys, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Gardena, Canoga Park, Reseda, Chatsworth, Echo Park, Silver Lake, Arleta, North Hollywood, Hollywood, etc are very crime ridden areas despite very expensive housing. There is enough crime and graffitti in these areas that people do not tend to walk the streets at night except in very commercial locations. While there are occasional shootings, most of the crime is theft type crimes. This same type of thing tends not to be true of Vegas. The lower middle class areas I have stayed tend to be VERY quiet and undisturbed. The areas I have stayed are N. Las Vegas near Lake Mead and I forget , and also not far from Sams Town. Actually, that place was kinda crappy. But no real trouble there from what I could see. |

Re: Nevada - most dangerous state in the U.S!!??
If people are basing these "most dangerous" cities and states from the Morgan Quitno Press "study", you might be off base. Morgan Quitno says that they base their rankings from FBI crime statistics, but the FBI explicitly says that you cannot/should not make some general ranking of cities based off their statistics.
The president of Morgan Quitno Press is also a shameless self-promoter, which could also impact the rankings. Morgan Quitno issued the press release that St. Louis was the most dangerous city literally hours after the Cardinals won the World Series. They also "coincidentally" named Atlanta the most dangerous city in 1996 when they hosted the Olympics. Scott Morgan, the company's president, was asked if the timing of these releases were merely publicity stunts, and he could only respond, "Well, I wouldn't call it a 'stunt'." I wouldn't panic over these statistics. |

Re: Nevada - most dangerous state in the U.S!!??
Nevada probably has a high violent crime/total crime rate on a per capita basis because per capita only counts residents. The transient(tourist) population of nevada or new mexico or louisiana or arizona is probably pretty high. In the case of Maryland, it has baltimore. If there was ever a city with a bad violent crime rep its Baltimore.
