WOW ZOMGWTFBBQ Part II: new Paul Thomas Anderson trailer!!!

Jesus Christ are you serious? If you include David Fincher, Spike Lee, Terrence Malick, and Martin Scorsese, I think you could close out the list of the best American filmmakers working today with the Coen Brothers and this guy.

Boogie Nights is clearly a masterpiece -- throw in Magnolia, Hard Eight, Punch Drunk Love... can this guy do any wrong? I've been dying to see his new period flick with Daniel Day Lewis, and there's finally a trailer out. HOLY [censored]. This fall is going to be orgasmically good for movies and for me (since pretty much every director I adore is stepping it up this year):

Again, awesome. A movie by my wife's favorite filmmaker, whom I also love, that is thematically right up my alley. Huzzah!

Since you didn't do it:

1. Magnolia
2. Boogie Nights
3. Hard Eight
4. A Prairie Home Companion (w/Robert Altman)
5. Punch-Drunk Love

Well it's a bit disingenuous to put the Altman film in there (I don't know how many scenes he helped with, because it really does feel like everything is Altman's voice), but his career is too short to start ranking everything. I just think Boogie Nights is among the 50 best films ever made. I don't care if it's half Jonathan Demme and half Scorsese. It's amazing.

Looks pretty dang good. Seems like a role DDL can really sink his teeth in. I'm definitely there.

I stand by my contention that had Magnolia been a tight 90 minutes focused soley on the Cruise-Hoffman-Robards storyline it would be considered one of the ten best films of the last 15-20 years. But it was almost unbearable to me as released.

Boogie Nights ftw goes without saying, of course. I liked Punch Drunk quite a bit, but that may be due to having a thing for Mary-Lynn Rajskub. I'm really not a big fan of Sandler, Watson, or Guzman most of the time, and I also think it's a rare misfire from Hoffman, so PTA obvo did a fine job directing & writing it.

PJ..based on what I've seen and heard the movies to look for this fall/winter are

"3:10 to Yuma": Russell Crowe(bad guy) and Christian Bale(good guy) in a western.

Brad Pitt's Western "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford".

Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood".

Lake of Fire: Abortion Doc by Tony Kaye

Grace is Gone

Lars and the Real Girl

The Kite Runner

American Gangster

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium

Coen Brothers "No Country for Old Men"

Sounds like an awesome lineup -- and you can add some flicks from Cannes that got buzz, like Silent Light (Reygadas) and 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days (Mungiu).

Boogie Nights is one of those movies that if I go a year or so without seeing it, I start to jones for it. I think Pulp Fiction and Boogie Nights are the two most entertaining films that have come out in my lifetime. (you forgot Tarantino on your list btw.) Thanks for the trailor.

Don't mean to hijack but you can't really consider Terrence Malick to be one of the best American film makers working today, can you? First of all, he makes about 1 film every decade, secondly, his body of work is simply above average. Anyway, I love PTA and this looks great.

I didn't see The Thin Red Line, but that given, I've seen everything else and he is incredibly far above average.

Is the main character of the trailer the guy from Gangs of NY?

Great Directer BTW. Boogie, and Magnolia are awesome! Hard 8 and others not as much (but still decent).

M Night is a much better director, when he's on his game, than he is a writer. His writing + ego gets in the way of his directing.
But he's only had 3 good films so he is in essentially the same camp as Nolan. Speilberg has slowly gone down hill

Gentlemen:

Two films I hate.

1) Magnolia
2) The Thin Red Line

I am willing, but just barely, to reconsider my stance on the former.

David Fincher's last two films (Panic Room and Zodiac) have been very disappointing. The Game, Seven, and Fight Club were all brilliant.

lol at the Game being brilliant but Zodiac being disappointing. Zodiac was the best film so far in 2007.

The above list is my personal breakdown(it is not a statement of fact) and lol at people who think Nolan is a good director but Night isn't.
...it doesnt have to do with overall careers...cuz then obviously Steven S, Cameron, Ridley, Coppola(who is technically still working) would be at the top.

Tweety 06-17-2007 04:24 PM

Re: WOW ZOMGWTFBBQ Part II: new Paul Thomas Anderson trailer!!!

I thought Zodiac was good, but definitely not great. The movie was too long and could have been pared down without losing any crucial substance. There was good suspense, but far less than many other good serial killer movies I've seen over the years. I also think Jake Gylenhall is very overrated as an actor.

Ridley Scott, Paul Greengrass, and Christopher Nolan are all British, not American. Ang Lee is arguable, since even though he is Taiwanese he makes quintessential American films (The Ice Storm and Brokeback are about as good as it gets in analyzing strictly American cultural sensibilities).

Agreed. I love Christian Bale and I like Russell Crowe in Westerns (cf. The Quick and the Dead), but I fell asleep halfway through that 3:10 to Yuma trailer.

EDIT: Just realized that the director is the awful James Mangold, who hasn't made anything resembling a watchable film in 6 tries (well I guess Walk the Line was barely watchable but it wasn't very good). Talk about a guy with no style at all... ugh.

Cop Land had Robert DeNiro and Harvey Keitel in it (and Ray Liotta helps too), but it was still mediocre and forgettable.

Walk the Line had Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny [censored] Cash, not to mention Reese Witherspoon.

Identity had Liotta with John Cusack, also helped by John C. McGinley, Alfred Molina, and Amanda Peet -- and it sucked!

I'm telling you, Mangold is the kiss of death. Everything he touches turns to sh|t.

CharlieDontSurf 06-18-2007 02:22 PM

Re: WOW ZOMGWTFBBQ Part II: new Paul Thomas Anderson trailer!!!

Walk the Line was good
Heavy was good
Identity wasn't great but it was as good as your average mindless thriller that is released now a days.
Cop Land wasn't any good....
The actors are great and I know people who have seen it and they all had very favorable reviews despite the fact it was a western...so I'm going more of that than anything.

and I think Angelina Jolie, Joaquin Phoenix, and Reece Witherspoon would disagree with your "turns to [censored]" opinion.

Re: WOW ZOMGWTFBBQ Part II: new Paul Thomas Anderson trailer!!!

Wow. I had no idea this was what PTA was up to. Looks absolutely awesome.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the movie that to me this most looks like (from the trailer anyway): Heaven's Gate. No? Might this be the masterpice that HG so wanted to be? Jesus I hope so. Maybe HG except with Cimino's epic vision, Mallick's extraordinaty lighting/imagery and PTA'a sense of style, story and characterisation? Oh my God I might explode with anticipation!!! Bring. It. On.

............................

Now, on to a very, very important matter: Magnolia. People, please. If you don't recognise this movie as a stone-cold masterpiece, you simply were not looking closely enough. Please, please, please get it out again and please re-consider.

I have NEVER seen a movie with such seemingly serious themes TOTALLY, TOTALLY hijack itelf not once but TWICE with the kind of breathtaking filmaking bravado that 99.99% of directors would crap themselves if they even thought about doing.

Think about the enormity of the cincematic vision in those 2 moments. Think about how those 2 moments TOTALLY re-inforce and amplify the themes of the movie even though they shouldn't, because they are essentually ridiculous moments in a serious movie. I weep for the sheer, brazen artictic audacity of such a thing. I have never seen anything like it.

Please reconsider Magnolia. Along with Goodfellas and one or two others it is in the Top 5 movies of the 90's, and therefore, by definition, one of the best films ever made.
