Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
Didn't see this anywhere, so here's the official pre-release thread.
This is definetly the movie I've been looking forward to most this summer, moreso than Spiderman 3 (haven't seen it), POTC:AWE (was good), or Shrek 3 (haven't seen it). According to Wiki, Spiderman 3 and Shrek 3 were the first and third top box office opening weekends ever in history, and while I don't think Transformers will do that well, I still think it's going to be great. The seamless transforming looks excellent, the cast and most specifically the voices (Hugo Weaving ftw) look very good. Should be pretty huge in Japan, at least. Anyone else as excited as I am? |
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
Loved the original Transformers as a kid and i will see this due to that, but i don't see any way this doesn't suck. It looks too much like those crappy modern CGI Transformers and not enough like the originals for my taste.
|
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
It looks more magical than mechanical to me. Like the pieces dissolve into another shape.
|
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
I never really got into Transformers as a kid - just passed me by for some reason.
When i first head Michael Bay was directing - i figured its another Bay classic where he misses the mark and its a POS. Then i realised he is actually good at brainless car chase scenes and big action set pieces. Well, these are cars that turn into robots - no way even Bay can screw it up, in fact its just about as perfect a film for him as i can think of. Also, it will be a really bad film, just fun and enjoyable to watch like Die Hard 4.0 will be and Next was. What is the acronym POTC:AWE? Edit - after hitting submit realised its Pirates 3. |

[/ QUOTE ] It looks to me like he did screw it up pretty bad. The original transformers cartoon actually is pretty interesting. The whole point of being transformers is that they're undercover from the humans; the autobots and decepticons fight each other and try to return to their home planet, and try to avoid a war with the humans. This movie seems to just be turning the transformers into scary monsters with no personality and making it a disaster/terror movie which is lame and so typical. |
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
I'm excited for this purely based on the eye-candy that it looks like it will have. Isn't this why everyone goes to see any comic book or cartoon turned film? I'm sure people can cite translations that did do very well (i.e. V for Vendetta, an X-Men or two, etc.) but this movie just LOOKS cool, which is why I want to see it. And of course, like most other kids, I loved the toys and the show.

Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
This movie will be the highest grossing of the year.
Aintitcool news has a few reviews so far and they have all been generally good.Possible Spoilers |
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
You must have a true love of overstatement.

[/ QUOTE ] What gives you this idea? They didn't choose to go "undercover" as cars, the decipticons in the original are trying to steal Earth's energy resources (not hide from humans) and the autobots try to protect the humans (not hide from them). This movie seems to just be turning the transformers into scary monsters with no personality and making it a disaster/terror movie which is lame and so typical. [/ QUOTE ] |
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
Hmm, i wouldnt prejudge a film on a trailer, especially the Transformer's - unless youve seen a trailer i havent, virtually nothing is shown.
Bourne 3 will be awesome - i really loved 1 and 2 and think they are well underrated. Am i gonna have to throw a hissy fit, or is Sin City 2 due out end of the year? |

Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
This 1 min clip shows several scenes they don't show in the movie trailers.
I think this will be a typical Michael Bay film. Lot of CGI, horrible plot. |

Transformers pre-screen factoid report
Saw a pre-screening of Transformers last night. I'm too lazy to write a full-blown trip report, so here are various factoids I noted:
1. Megan Fox is ridiculously scorching-hot. Never heard of her before Transformers. 2. Favorite Transformers were Bumblebee & Starscream. Starscream is mostly cool because there are some sequences when he transforms to/from jet to robot in combat in mid-air. Bumblebee gets some pretty cool action sequences and he initially can't talk, so he has to change radio stations to express things. But, its weird that by restricting him that way, he turns out to be one of the more interesting/fun characters. 3. I think a lot of the action shots are shot too close up, like when Optimus & Megatron are fighting hand-to-hand (why would super-advanced robots fight this way?) its hard to tell what's happening because you're viewing it from such an up-close perspective. 4. The humans' dialogue/performances are campy and really pop-culture/quippy. It was a bit much for me to enjoy them all. The Transformers' dialogue is really dorky (esp. Optimus. "Humans are a young species, we must protect them. They deserve the chance to make their own fate") Not that you go to a movie like this for great dialogue, but Optimus is supposed to be this hardboiled, tough general but his character is much truer to the cartoon version. 5. The movie is strangely-paced. There are moments when things seem really tense and then the action dissolves and then there are narrative sequences and then action again. 6. Some goofy casting choices with Anthony Anderson (supposedly a superhacker), Rachael Taylor (also super-hot, and a math/crypto genius by trade) and John Tuturro (supposedly a secret gov't agency head, but he plays it almost like the crazy butler in Mister Deeds) I probably wouldn't see it again, but it wasn't terrible. I would try to rein in any great expectations; unlike what i thought would be the case, the live-action robots were actually the least of the movie's issues. |
Re: Transformers pre-screen factoid report
My brother got tix to an advance last night, invited me but I had plans and despise Michael Bay.
He's a huge transformers fan, he said he was happy the movie stayed true to a lot of the stuff in the original series/movie. Said Starscream was by far the best transformer, which based on the ads isn't surprising at all. He said that when the transformers talk, their dialogue is unbearable, though otherwise he seemed to think the movie was ok. |
Re: Transformers pre-screen factoid report
I am super ramped up for this movie.

I am super ramped up for this movie. [/ QUOTE ] Also, I just got pissed when I read IMDB's cast list. They have Charlie Adler listed as the voice of Starscream instead of Frank Welker. WTF? Was Frank Welker too busy voicing dinosaurs for a Disney Movie or did he die or something? So far from previews, the only thing I haven't liked is that they should've used G2 Megatron instead of a fancy new one. They could've at least made him a tank for the classic look of his cannon arm. This movie looks like it's gona be awesome. Great work of CGI. |
Re: Transformers pre-screen factoid report
I'm still looking forward to Hugo Weaving's voice.
And Megan Fox eye candy. |

Re: Transformers pre-screen factoid report
Early reviews coming in. All average or above. A couple real strong ones, a couple so-so.
I def. will check this out next week. |

You're right. When I was thinking of it, Starscream + Megatron = Welker, Soundwave = Latta, when it was really Soundwave + Megatron = Welker, Starscream = Latta. On an interesting note, they did get Frank Welker to voice Megatron in the DS game based on the movie. What I was really mad about was Charlie Adler voicing Starscream, just because I've never liked Adler. While I think he could recreate a pretty good Starscream voice, I never really liked the other projects he lent his lungs to. (This is all assumed on it being the same Charlie Adler who did AAAAAAAH Real monsters, and a Pup named Scoobie Doo) |
Re: Transformers pre-screen factoid report
80% Fresh Rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Obviously, this is more than anyone expected out of a simple Transformers movie by Michael Bay. link

Re: Transformers pre-screen factoid report
I took my nephew and niece to see this tonight. I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. Both kids loved it.
|
Re: Transformers pre-screen factoid report
I enjoyed this a LOT more than I expected. It's corny, parts of it are dumb, but I had fun, marked out a few times. Pretty solid, worth seeing on the big screen if you're a fan of the cartoon imo.

Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
I think this sucked. It was fun the first half hour or so, but after the scene with the small transformer in AF1 I figured this movie is going downhill fast - boy was I right. Horrible dialog, bad acting, bad story (so goddamn many plot holes it's not even funny). I realize the target audience will enjoy it though, because it really shines through that this movie is made for kids.
|
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
I thought it was alright. Too long, but as a geek, I enjoyed it. Everytime I see one of these movies, I always wish they could shoot a movie in the "lots of special effects action" genre with less quick cuts and clearer action.
Oh, I said it was better than Fantastic Four by a lot, and worse than Die Hard 4 by a medium amount. |
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
I was entertained, although it should've been shorter. Also,
YEAH CRIMINALS ARE HOT |
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
wow, i saw it last night at midnight. i am not sure if it is the worst movie i have ever seen, but it was unbelievably bad. don't go see transformers.

Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
Haven't seen it yet, but from the comments I've seen so far, I think there are a lot of people who suck at summer movies here.

[/ QUOTE ] this isn't a 'summer movie' problem. it really was just unbelievably bad. instead of making the movie about transformers it was two and a half hours of some kid trying to be funny and just being really annoying. and there was a 15 minute battle scene at the beginning and then again at the end. that was it. |
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
It's overlong, and there's too much focus on the humans, but still, it was entertaining.
If you recall, I really hated Fantastic 4, in part because the got all the fun stuff wrong. Transformers made up for that with some awesome action scenes, a lot of corny but effective humor, and some nice nostalgic appeal. It's sure as hell not high art, but again, if you're a kid who grew up playing with the toys/watching the cartoon, I think you'll enjoy it. |
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
I really dislike fast-forwarded action sequences where each shot is out of focus and lasts 1/4 of a second. The movie was OK, too bad Speilberg didnt direct it. It didn't nearly live up to its potential.
|
Re: Official TRANSFORMERS Thread
FWIW, Roger Ebert hates Michael Bay movies, but almost gave this one four stars.

The most offensive thing in the movie was Bumblebee giving a little fordoor shiver to a yellow bug |
