Fashions you love/hate

Okay, looks to me there's a mini 60s revival going on in my part of the world. This morning travelling to work I saw no less than 4 different girls with stuff like lots of mascara, bright pink lipstick, ski pants, bob haircuts. Now, I dig this look way more than the pervasive grungy look that seems entrenched in the teens/twentysomethings, so I am happy.

Alternatively, I saw some tool wearing a baseball cap backwards at work yesterday. At work! And I'm talking a technical person, not the janitor. Ugh. I think he was Danish tho.

This is in England, btw.

Wondered what fashions exist in your part of the world, and what is good/bad/ugly there?

I love 60's fashions! I'm talking about women's fashions. I've been trying to find some good examples of the types of shirts and dresses that I love that have a 60's look but I'm running out of time. I will try to post some maybe at lunch.

What do you guys and girls think of this style top for women (not for teenagers)? Do we like?

The first one is very unflattering. The second somewhat less so, but I'm still not a fan of this style in general. I call them maternity shirts.

I walk around Yale for a little exercise after lunch every day. One thing that bugs me is how many of these kids wear flip-flops everywhere. There are even some students temping in my building who wear them to work! WTF?!?!

When did these things become appropriate everyday footwear? Look, if I can see your toenails, you better be at the beach, or a chick in open toed shoes...

Leave the flip flops at home...

Edit: Interestingly, there's a current OOT thread on this subject... linky

I hate them on women. I think the picture speaks for itself on men.
When I was young, long long ago, these were called 'clamdiggers'. Which had a function, your pants did not get muddy if you were clamming barefoot in the mud.
Except for this rare exception for function over form, there is something that just drives me nuts about them. Like the poor kids who outgrew clothes and still had to wear them.

I'm reading this from work, baseball cap on backwards and toe splitters on my feet. I'm oddly proud of being a walking fashion pet peeve.

Re: Fashions you love/hate

Katy,

I think that one's the best of the three. However, the whole style just doesn't do it for me. Those tops do such a good job of hiding your form that I can't help but think that the girl wearing them hates her body, needs a shirt with a whole lot of extra room in it, or both. A baggy man's t-shirt would look better on most girls than that very first of these frumpy pregnancy shirts.

Re: Fashions you love/hate

Love: Little frilly white sundress top with vintage jeans.
Love: Business pants suits on women (low cut blouses only though)

Hate: Big sunglasses! So many reasons. Ugly chicks wear them to disguise how hideous they are. So then you check them out, they get an undeserved self esteem boost and you get disappointed when up close. Plus the actually hot chicks that wear them are hard to flirt with cause you can’t make eye contact. Ladies, this is –EV.

Blarg 06-15-2007 04:30 PM

Re: Fashions you love/hate

Katie, your first pic shows how easily those tops degenerate into looking like frumpy housedresses. The dull color just rubs it in. Everything about this blouse says frump and does nothing to improve the girl wearing it.

I think this kind of blouse is hard to pull off well. The second pic looks SO much better because it is cut tighter and has a vibrant color.

Looks like this would only work on a very young girl. They just look hyper-casual, like something you would wear while doing the laundry or household chores. Just shapeless and if they could be said to have a character, it would be "indifferent to making my owner look good or like she even wants to try."

Blarg,

I'm going to ignore your "frumpy housedress" comment and continue on, pretending I'm not wounded.

These are $229.99

I could dig those on a girl. I wouldn't think they're hot enough to be worth over $200 if I didn't know it from your post, but they're pretty cool.

I like all the outfits. But I think they're colored wrong. The first one would look much better with white instead of gray, and the third one would look much better with a summerish yellow or something.

Don't know what the problem is here? If its hot out then why not wear them. My feet get majorly sweaty if I have to wear proper shoes and socks on a hot day. I'd say its more your problem for being squeamish at the sight of other peoples toenails.

Re: Fashions you love/hate

I think the shoes could work well w/ jeans. The blue toe piece helps. It depends on the top she's wearing some, too, though. If she's in kind of an everyday top, then she'd look weird wearing heels. If she's dressed a little nicer on top w/ a nice pair of jeans, then the shoes work.

Katy,

I've got a question for you. What kind of sandals work on men, if not the ones you showed, and if not flip flops, because I don't like wearing them?

The problem is that it looks really terrible from a fashion standpoint (and the topic of the thread is fashion). If you value the extra comfort more than looking good, that's fine, you should wear them. I don't have a problem with it. Just know that most people are going to think you dress terribly, which you might not care about, which if true is also fine.

Also, not wearing flip-flops doesn't mean you have to sweat. there's plenty of good looking shoes that are comfortable and can be worn without socks.

Depends on the jeans I think. Since the shoes look like jeans fabric it might match really bad with some jeans. It'll be too much jeans. I think it works better with something like a summer dress instead. (which is btw the best looking thing a girl can wear during summer IMO)

Okay, but high heels and jeans seem to be at cross purposes. I know not everyone thinks that; lots of people think jeans should be elevated into something fancy and designer-ish. But still, they seem to me like what they are -- casual work pants, not fancy high-heely things. YMMV

This has got so much leather on it that it might as well be a shoe. A shoe would probably be more comfortable because at least you'd have a sock to soak up the sweat. Leather directly on sweat is no fun. Perverts excepted.

From the stand point of someone who likes to focus on classically fashionable as opposed to seasonably fashionable, "hot, fashionable" girls often look completely ridiculous. Seriously

I also hate flip flops on guys, and especially with jeans. And especially if you have ugly, pasty-white feet, like most of the guys who wear flip flops with jeans do.

I like flip flops, but there is a place for them. Probably not best suited for the workplace on most cases.

Would the pics that Katy posted be considered flip flops? The leathery ones or are you guys just strictly talking about the much flimsier plastic/rubber ones?

I like Birkenstock myself, for me especially. But not the ugly biblical looking types, I like fancy Birks.
(No socks ever! )

I was checking out feet in the grocery store today and what Katy posted in pretty much what you see in the way of sandals on men's feet around here.

Katy, I am not a huge fan of heels with jeans, unless you are talking about boots.
I do think that part of being able to pull off heels (whatever you are wearing) is the ability to walk in the with some grace. (I know this has been discussed in the past)

I understand and accept flip flops with shorts, but just really don't like the jeans and flip flops look. I can count the number of guys I have seen that it looks good on in one hands. As for casual shoes, I really like these with jeans:

With shorts, I usually cycle between Lacostes (basic, solid white), Adidas, and a pair of old school Vans that I've had for years.

In the tropics, everyone wears flip flops with jeans and nobody thinks they look bad. They're about the most natural combination possible, outside of short pants or swimming trunks.

Also, those shoes above don't fit my taste, nothing personal.

I don't live in the tropics. I live in Portland, Oregon, and when a guy wears jeans and flip flops in 55 degree weather, and I have to see his pasty white, ugly ass feet, I think it looks horrible. No [censored] they look good in the tropics, flip flops (traditionally) defined a laid back, purposefully degenerate life style (e.g., Jimmy Buffett).

I'm not even going to touch whether it's appropriate to wear flip flops to work. Unless you work in a job where such a choice is OBVIOUSLY ok, any discussion shouldn't exist at all.

That's good. The problem with disagreeing with people is they so often take it personally and things don't even have time to degenerate -- they immediately go right into "Well what about YOU" or "Oh yeah?" and the like.
