A decent beer is fine... mixed drinks are for girly-men. Sam Adams or Heineken or Amstel Light or something quality IMO. The only acceptable mixed drink is a James Bond style martini and unless you're supercool you can't pull that one off.

Order a mojito - its a refreshing rum based drink with crushed mint leaves, very sophisticated.

Pronounced Moh-jee-two.

Beer is always good.

When at fine dining joints I'll order scotch on the rocks like a Glenlivet or Macallan

Yep. That's the one factor standing between you and being knee-deep in trim: knowing what a Manhattan is.

Just order a scotch, if you really think this is important.

Any drink that's either brown or clear and doesn't have an umbrella sticking out of it is probably acceptable.

Yeah, this is super important. I was a bartender for 4 years, and I couldn't tell you the number of times I saw a chick give her date head right then and there based solely on the drink he ordered.

Whew, crazy days...

OP serious response - it doesn't matter what drink you order. You are either getting some or you aren't.

I would guess aren't.

glenlivet is overrated because it is one of the better known single malts. macallan is good stuff and so is glenmorangie. any johnny walker starting at green is delicious. also, drink your scotch neat. getting it on the rocks is terrible, if you don't chug it, it tastes all watery within minutes

Any drink whose name is it's ingredients is an acceptable drink. This is a universal and unquestionable rule.

Rum and coke=YES
Fuzzy Navel=GAY

If you ever have to explain to the bartender how to make your drink, you've done something terribly, terribly wrong.

g-bebe 06-14-2007 01:00 AM

Re: what to drink to seem sophisticated

For the last two years, whenever I drank, I stuck with gin, and throughout that, it's been all Bombay Sapphire. Most gins like Beefeater or Tanqueray (sp?) just taste terrible if you ask me. Gin goes great with tonic, and almost any soft drink except for Coke/Pepsi, I don't think it goes great with that but people will disagree with me. Gin and red bull is very good too, just like a vodka and red bull.

Personally, I can't drink more than a few beers unless I'm eating while I do so, otherwise my stomach gets insanely heavy and I get lazy and lothargic and sleepy. Not to mention, I never feel well after I do so. Mixed drinks do not have this affect on me -- I have much more fun with mixed drinks.

My favorite is Hendrick's. It's flavored in part w/ cucumber, so it's a little different. Plymouth is also a contender. It was the original Martini gin. On the cheaper side, I picked up a bottle of Broker's recently that was really solid for the price. It's also stronger than most gin.

Second comes right after first...

To the OP- seriously, it doesn't matter what you drink, its all about what she's drinking. Sheesh, what are they teaching kids these days? Classy isnt about what you are drinking, its about how you drink it. Someone drinking fruity drinks responsibly will look much classier than someone knocking back 18 year old scotch as fast as he can.

But seeing as you asked, my go to drink is Canadian Club premium and dry gingerale.
