Why play high stakes at casino?
Random question: I was wondering why do these big game players play at a raked game, when they could just as easily play at one of their homes? No rake...More profit, more privacy?

Re: Why play high stakes at casino?
why play low stakes at a casino?
empty seats need filling |
Re: Why play high stakes at casino?
Yeah, I guess so. I'd think these players would be able to get people to come play at an unraked game pretty easily though?

One of them could set up something like a home casino. I'm amazed no-one's thought of this before! [/ QUOTE ] It is much easier to cheat at a home game. It's also much easier to rob one. If strangers in a casino invited me to a private game I would be suspicious. Not saying I wouldn't go, or that it would necessarilly be crooked, but I would be suspicious and careful. There are lots of scumbags at casino's, including in the poker room. Go look up Russ G. on RGP. He ran a team of guys that cheated the high stakes games in LA casino's for many years. If he can get away with that in a casino, what do you think is possible in home games? |

[/ QUOTE ] Do you think they care about whatever low rake they were paying? In return they get a professional dealer, a safe and comfortable environment, good service (I presume) and the occasional fish that also wants to play. The question is much more relevant at low stakes, but the same argument applies. |

The rake in live high stakes games in pretty small as a percentage of the pot. In the biggest games in the US, they may be paying like $30/hour time charge.

Re: Why play high stakes at casino?
Wasn't there some Swedish pro (Martin somebody?) who hired a cheat (Russ G?) to rig a hotel room with cameras? The idea was he would get his buddies out of casino to play in his room. The scheme didn't work because they wouldn't leave the casino.

Re: Why play high stakes at casino?
When Brunson et al were trading public letters with Andy Beal to negotiate more heads-up limit play, one of the points that the pros insisted on was that the games be played in a licensed casino.

Re: Why play high stakes at casino?
I think a better question might be why would anyone take the risk of playing a high-stakes game in a private-home when there's a much safer option in the form of a casino available for a pretty low fee (low compard to the stakes they are playing for at least)

Re: Why play high stakes at casino?
Don't forget, high stakes players thrive in all the lookey-lous admiring them through the glass. The attention makes them feel special, that or like zoo animals

Martin de Knijf and some others were the victims. |
