Sushi in Vegas

Best spots to get good Sushi in Vegas? Preferably center strip.

Probably been covered before, but I searched and could not find it. Thanks in advance...

Sushi Roku?

I live in SF/Monterey, CA area where theres some real good sushi, so I can vouch that Social House in TI is pretty decent

The Social House is excellent. It's quite classy so dress nice.

Magician: thanks for the reccommendation. I'm from the Bay Area also, so I know you have good taste.

I think I'm looking for something more casual than Social House though. This would be for a late lunch/business meeting...

Is Sushi Roku any good? Or too... "SoCal" (for lack of a better phrase)?

Re: Sushi in Vegas

The only sushi place i've actually eaten at is Social House, so I can't say for sure, but other people have told me Roku is pretty good.

In my opinion, Social House is semi-casual, you don't have to be dressed up, you just can't show up in shorts and a t-shirt. They encourage sharing dishes and a friendly, "Social" atmosphere. But they don't open til 5, so it'd be more an early dinner than late lunch.

And I'm not trying to push you there or anything, its just the only place i've actually eaten at. I think you'll be fairly safe at almost any place on the strip.

Sushi Roku (Caesars) and Nobu (Hard Rock) are both good. Sushi Mon is fun for all-you-can-eat.

If you are willing to leave the strip there is a great sushi place on W Sahara (not terribly far from the strip) called Osaka. http://www.lasvegas-sushi.com/

Raw fish. In the desert. In a land-locked state. Um.

You're from the land of cheap and plentiful delicious sushi. Why not try something different in Vegas? I can recommend the Brazilian BBQ at the Mirage, much better than whatever that place is on Market in SF.

Vegas is 4 hours from the coast. What, you think you can only get fresh fish if you're ankle deep in salt water?

4 hours more fresh, yes. Call me crazy, but I think that's quite a long time for raw fish.

(And yes yes, I know it's just fine, and my sushi isn't as fresh as I like to pretend, but c'mon... making fun of raw fish in the desert is funny! Well, unless you live there and are tired of the same old jokes...)

Ceasars has a good place near their boat bar thingie. It can be casual clothing wise but still pricey.

The health code here in New York says that fish cannot be served raw without having been frozen.

Of course all the sushi restaurants try to keep it a secret.

So much for "fresh fish".

Ah Sin at the Paris has some of the best sushi i've ever had FWIW. Fairly casual, I've eaten in shorts and a T-shirt before.

Edit: Nobu is cool if you are going for the atmosphere/specific style of cuisine, but I wasn't real impressed with their sushi.... Now there 50yr old sake y2k is another story... Order it chilled and you won't regret it.

no one has mentioned Sushi-Mon. there s 2 locations that i know of..both are off the strip. 1 is on sahara and close by durango

the other is off of maryland parkway and silverado ranch

it s a $25 buffet but the catch is that it's all ala carte. so order w/e the hell u want and they bring it out to you.

it includes nigiri, rolls, and hot food.

be sure to order all the off the menu items..just ask what they have

it s the best buffet i ve had...i ve had todai and think it s crap. sushi mon is def better..the a la carte makes it all worth it

obvisouly this isnt nobu but for $25 bux u can stuff your face with pretty decent sushi and hot food. it s always packed with locals

Thanks all for the replies. I wasn't aware of sushi mon. I may check that out.

Are Nobu and Roku ridulously expensive or just expensive? I've heard mixed feedback.

pfapfap: Also interested in trying out that Brazillian BBQ at the Mirage, as I will be staying there...I've never actually had it though. Is it similar to Argentinian food?

No one's mentioned Okada yet, it is excellent as well. My top 3 in Vegas are (in this order): Nobu, Okada, and Social House.

Any opinions on the sushi at Little Buddha in the Palms?

I was there with a group last month and one of us ordered susi. It looked good, he enjoyed it, but I did not try any.

The last time I was in Vegas I ate at a sushi buffet at Alladin (Planet H'wood now). I think it was called Todai or something like that. The I haven't been to Vegas in about a year so I don't know if it's still there. They had sashimi on the buffet for supper.

Nobu's expensive, but not ridiculously so....unless you go buck wild like we did and order 5 bottles of sake for 3 people.....good times

Yes, Todai is a national chain. Their sushi / sashimi is not bad for a buffet, but you can't really compare it to a "nice" Japanese restaurant. That said, I think Todai is a great value for the money and I enjoy eating there. But if you can afford to splurge (and if splurging on food is something you enjoy), then I would strongly urge you to try one of the nice ones.

Price-wise, the three that I mentioned (as well as any other high-end Japanese in Vegas) are comparable. Completely off the top of my head, expect to pay something like $4/piece of nigiri / sashimi, $6 for a spicy tuna type of roll, and $10-$20 for a fancy roll.

I've actually read the 24 (!!!) page manual of handling instructions from catch to plate to call fish "sushi" grade.

Some reality:

1) Tunas are killed, bled and are best served 3 days later. Plenty to time for transportation. If you have doubts go to the websites that describe the handling for the pen raised bluefin tuna off of Baja and Australia. I've seen the offshore Baja pens.

2) A lot of fish destined for the sushi bar is quickly frozen to kill all the little critters. Parasite protection. Having cleaned 1000's of lbs. of fish, I've encountered lots of critters under the skins of fish, but the vast majority are harmless to humans.

Whether your fish is fresh or frozen depends on your restaurant and its wholesaler. You can always ask about your restaurants handling practices and standards.

pf,

Most good sushi you've had has either been aged for a few days or frozen or both.

The best is yama sushi on maryland + flamingo. 23$ all you can eat. Every time I go somewhere else I'm disappointed that I didn't go to yama.
