Straights and Flushes in Limit Hold \'em

I have a question about drawing straights and flushes at micro-limit games. I know it happens a lot, and my only downfall so far has been so much money spent when I have a suited Ax or Kx, and I flop two of the same suit. Probably 5 out of 8 times, I that suit doesn't land on the river, and I've lost about 5 - 7BB. Again, with the straight, I'll have J10, and the 9, 8, 2 will land on the flop. How long should I draw this hand out in the hopes of getting the straight in limit? Should I just rely on pot odds (though I almost always have the pot odds to call, because there are always so many loose-passive players who call initially), or is there a better way? Thanks, and take care.

If you have a flush draw or OESD you almost always have the odds to see the river. You are experiencing variance. IBL.

Cameron, you should probably pick up a book such as "Getting Started in Hold'em" that discusses fundamental concepts such as pot odds.

over/under on how many posts until someone says that this is why they don't play limit because there's no skill involved = 6

First of all - learn the math of the game.

You said:

I have a suited Ax or Kx, and I flop two of the same suit. Probably 5 out of 8 times, that suit doesn't land on the river

That means that the flush card *does* come in 3 of 8 times, or 37.5% of the time. Since the odds against making your flush by the river is 1.91:1 or 34.6% of the time, you are actually observing the flush come in more often than it should.

You're never going to learn to play well until you learn the basic math.

Keep in mind the nuts. Drawing to a flush with 87s could be a problem when a higher flush is out there.

However, even more of a problem is drawing to a non-nut straight. JT always makes the nut straight. So if you have something like 76, you need to be careful. A board of 8 5 K is a lot better than a board of 9 8 K (remember JT is out there).

As well, pairing the board brings the possibility of a full house which screws both flushes and straights.

As a final note, when you have an OESD and there are two flush cards on the flop, then potentially your 8 outs for the straight could only be really 6 outs because two of the outs could make somebody a flush.

Here is a good book on limit holdem for the internet: http://www.amazon.ca/Internet-Texas-Hold...7752&sr=1-3
