What to do with $14000?
Hello 2+2,
Sorry about the misleading title, didn’t think newbie needs help would get much attention. I am about to embark into the world of poker. I am 20 years old, male, and I have savings of which I am going to use $14000 as my initial bank roll. I am not one to go head first into a situation and thus I would like to feel fully prepared before I start playing with my bank roll. I would like to draw onto the wisdom of 2+2ers to help me on my way. I would be grateful if anyone could answer ANY of the following questions. If you can only provide input on 1 or 2 questions and not all of them that would still be much appreciated. Q1: What is the best way to get started? Q2: What books or websites should I read up on? Q3: Is there any real difference in play on any of the sites? Q4: Apart from having a good poker strategy will I need to be efficient in anything else to become a successful player? Q5: I am seriously considering acquiring the services of a coach. Are there any reputable coaches who charge reasonable prices available? I have read that a lot of coaches analyze hand histories and send feedback etc. I feel that a personable approach is needed thus can anyone provide me details of a coach who can teach over the phone, IM or in person and teach me the basics of poker to more advanced theory, psychology, software, and even the best sites to play on. Thank you in advance and I hope I can contribute to the 2+2 community once I get going. Shaz |

why did you post this in four forums simultaneously?

Re: What to do with $14000?
Hi, because I didn't think everyone reads every forum. I'll keep this post limited to around 4 forums incase anyone thinks I'm attempting to crowd the forums.
Forgot to put down contact details. If you have any input, advice, are a coach or just want to chat email address is [email protected]. Shaz. |

Re: What to do with $14000?
You missed the last one, but they are sure to have another:
http://www.camphellmuth.com/img_index/banner9.jpg That is 2,000 so you have 12,000 left. Play 20/40 limit with the 300BB you have left. I hear that 6max tables are better than full ring so you might want to start with that. Good luck! |
Re: What to do with $14000?
Buy a piece of BK when he pummels Matusow.
|
Re: What to do with $14000?
I enjoy eating Funyons. The perfect size are those Big Grabs that they sell in most convenience stores. I would probably buy 14,000 bags of Funyons. But don't buy them all at once, because they will go bad before you can eat them all.

Re: What to do with $14000?
Play Dikshit heads up on Stars. I heard he cleaned out JJProdigy and is waiting for a new challenger.
|
Re: What to do with $14000?
The best way to get started is to read a ton of books and head for the play money tables, I like pokerroom.com because the players take it more seriously there than other sites IMO. When you can beat those soundly start playing the small buyins and work your way up.

Re: What to do with $14000?
put 13k into an investment account
use the other 1k to get a 20" lcd, pokertracker and some books then deposit $50 into one of the sites with nano limits, start playing 5c/10c and work your way from there |
Re: What to do with $14000?
Lol, thanks guys. Some relevant and some not so but any help is appreciated. I think I'm going to get my head down into some books and start at the low limits and get a feel for the game.
Noone's really mentioned any coaches. Are there any apart from Ciaffone and Tommy. Any good threads on coaching? TY. Shaz |

Re: What to do with $14000?
i only skimmed your post due to laziness but i'll try to offer some advice.
you said you have 14k in savings. keep at least 13k in there. you have no need for that much right now. learn about bankroll management and VARIANCE. start playing in small games even if they are boring. read these forums a lot. read a few books but dont worry too much about them. bonus whore a lot to begin with. word. |
Re: What to do with $14000?
Put $13 500 in a bank account with high interest.
get the $500, buy PT and PA - thats about $80 gone so $420 then buy Small Stakes Hold'em and maybe Theory of Poker or Getting Started in Hold'em depending on if your very new or not. Read them loads, play .5/1 with your $350 or so remaining and log like 15 000 hands and post here lots. Make the move to 6max when you got like $500 bucks Then grind it away. Edit: i dont mean lose it, i mean grind and get more. Oops. |

Re: What to do with $14000?
Thank you to all who have replied with some sound advice. I merely advertised I had a bank roll of $14000 to indicate I do not need to play at the micro limits and also to make sure I am given advice that one may not necessarily be given if people perceive him/her to have little or no money such as details on a coach or decent software etc.
I think I should apologize for asking such vague questions. I should have been more precise. "Q1. What is the best way to get started?" --- Should one opt for a coach before playing with real money? Should I practise with Poker Academy or other learning aids? Are there any other learning aids? Which is the best limit to start at considering I have a decent bank roll. I ask this because I am under the impression that in the lower limits any hand goes and play is very inconsistent. It is not until limits 3/6 and upwards that a skilled player may beat a less skilled player. Q2 - ANSWERED!! So thank you. "Q3: Is there any real difference in play on any of the sites?" --- Which sites have the highest fish:shark ratio in favour of sharks? Would one be wise to assume Party and Stars have the largest number of fish as they have the largest number of players. Which sites offer the best rakeback deals and bonuses? Is there anything else I should look for in a site other than what I have stated above? Q4: Apart from having a good poker strategy will I need to be efficient in anything else to become a successful player? --- Such as the use of software (PokerOffice, PokerEdge), table selection etc. Where will I be able to find more information on this? What can I do further to increase my edge on other players? Q5: Details on coaches would be much appreciated. So far have only been in contact with two potential coaches. Are there any threads or sites that are dedicated to coaching info? What information should one request from a coach to determine their ability as a player and a coach? I hope I have been specific enough this time. I look forward to all feedback. Thank you all. Shaz |

Re: What to do with $14000?
Shazzy,
I suggest you spend it developing software that will auto-post multiple threads in 2+2 on every board at very regular time intervals. Make sure they cover topics that have already been discussed ad nauseam or are just plain stupid. |

Don't worry about finding coaches and software etc etc etc. Play limit to start with. Buy Getting Started in Hold em by Ed Miller. Read it and reread it again. But Small Stakes Hold em by Ed Miller. Read it and reread it again. Open an account on Pokerstars (they do not offer rakeback so you won't miss out here). Buy Pokertracker. Play some low limit games (0.25/0.50) and play 1,000 hands. See how you do. See if you enjoy it. Read hands and advice in the micro/limit small stakes forum. See how you go for 20,000 hands. Move up as you see fit and when you are comfortable. If you enjoy the game etc then you can worry about bankroll, coaching, rakeback and the like. A couple of other things. Do not be embarrassed to play low limits to start. Do not be ashamed if you are playing BicycleKick at 400/800 at the commerce within 3 weeks. Do not envy the people that are making $20,294,024 a week playing holdem. Good Luck. |

Re: What to do with $14000?
put $13,300 in a high inteest bank account.
Deposit $500 in pokerstars and start playing $0.02/0.05, log all your hands Buy poker tracker Buy a poker library and re-read it. People say you have to pay to learn poker.. you have to donate your money in cash games to learn from better players. I think this is just wrong if you start in the right place. |
Re: What to do with $14000?
Has anyone suggested 50-100 NL yet?
|
Re: What to do with $14000?
I know everyone wants him to start at .50/1.00 Since he has the bankroll why not start at $2/4 after doing the reading.
Is the play that much different at .50/1.00 than 2/4? |

Re: What to do with $14000?
I would suggest starting at small stakes, wether limit or no limit is your game, but 2k should be enough to handle any variance you see at .5/1 games and various expenses. The reason I say small stakes and not micro is that micro tends to be really really poor play and you might develop some bad characteristics trying to beat it, its best to have opponents who at the least, are at the tables to win (despite how poorly they do it). A 2001fp was suggested earlier, and I agree with it because, 1. its easy on the eyes, 2. its useful for everything, and 3. 3-4 tabling is minimal for any serious online player.
Other than that, read up and study your play. Edit: POKER TRACKER |
Re: What to do with $14000?
Shazzy,
I wouldnt get a coach till I was winning at the micro limits, that's just me. the early part of the learning curve is so steep cause it's all new info and you will have TONS to learn and develop, that you dont need the subtle stuff a coach will mention till later. |
