Sandwich tips thread

Here are some of mine:

1) Cut sandwiches in half diagonally into triangles. This definitely makes them taste better.

2) French's French Fried Onions - toss a few of these in for a delicious crunch.

3) Potato chips - can serve the same purpose as #2 if you don't have french fried onions handy. I try not to have potato chips around, though, because I can't help but eat them all.

4) Beaver Sweet Hot Mustard - especially outstanding on roast beef sandwiches

I like to butter the outsides of the bread and then throw the sandwich in the toaster oven. Comes out tasting sort of like grilled cheese but with less mess to cleanup.

Find a good honey mustard and never let it go. Turkey sandwiches are not complete without honey mustard.

Most Subways have barbecue sauce. You just have to ask.

Try horseradish sauce instead of the mustard some time.

i like to take a little butter spray (garlic flavored is especially nice) and throw the roll - I like my sandwiches on french rolls, but I guess bread would work - into the oven (my apartment is too small for a toaster or toaster oven).

also, I find hummus to be a delightful and healthy alternative to mayo. mostly I hate mayo.

As you're eating the sandwich, flip it over every so often. You'll taste whichever side is on the bottom MUCH more strongly, so if you flip it over it's like a new sandwich.

For example, I have bread-mustard-roastbeef-ham-swiss-bread.

I'll start with the mustard/roastbeef side on my tongue and take a few bites. Yum, mustard and roast beef with a hint of ham and cheese. Then I flip it over and suddenly it's a ham and cheese with some roast beef and a nice hint of mustard.

Horseradish sauce is fantastic. I especially like Boar's Head mustard because it has a strong horseradish flavor.

Best Sandwich ever: The Cuban

Tasty, toasted Cuban sandwiches are Miami's favorite snack. These treats can be found in most Miami restaurants, but the best places to buy them are from the street corner-snack bars, called loncherias.

The sandwiches have a submarine-style layering of ham, roast pork, cheese, and pickle between a sliced length of Cuban bread. The key to a great, versus a good, Cuban Sandwich lies in the grilling. A great Cuban sandwich is grilled in a sandwich press (called a plancha) until the ham, pork, and pickles have warmed in their own steam. Cuban restaurants use a sandwich press, but you can substitute a waffle iron. These sandwiches use no mayonnaise, lettuce, onions, bell peppers, or tomatoes; however, butter and mustard are optional. Cuban sandwiches are sold hot (pressed)

Also, with ice cream, you should turn the spoon upside down when you put it in your mouth. Otherwise you taste mainly the spoon when you eat it out of a bowl.

Soss: Not sure exactly why, but that just looks like it will be AWESOME.

B2L: Those who have read my other cooking threads know I am a HUGE fan of horseradish. I often use horseradish on my sandwiches and love it. Sometimes I'll do mustard on one slice of bread and horseradish on the other for some extra kick.

acme: Cuban sandwiches are delicious, but Vietnames sandwiches are the best!

mason: I am going to try the flipping technique tomorrow.

Everything tastes better with Onions.

Tip your local subway guys, after a while they really make them better/add extra items at no charge, etc.

Matt,

Do you directly tip the subway guy making the sandwich or do you just conspicuously leave some money in the tip jar? If the latter, is this a place where the guy making your sandwich is usually ringing you up too?

My tips:
1. Avacado makes almost any sandwich better
2. George forman grill is good for making paninis
3. A side dish makes a sandwich a meal. I like chips, fruit, or steamed veggies. Otherwise, you have to have two sandwiches.

Good question, I leave the money in the tip jar. They all rotate between making sandwhiches and ringing customers up. Usually two guys have a part making my sandwhich as they switch off after the toasting. I make it a point to say thanks to them. They remember that as well. Also, they must note that I'm the big guy who always comes in workout clothes and orders three chocolate chip cookies on the side.

You can put the side-dish (as well as another main dish) IN the sandwich with equal results:

SossMan - I can't believe I've never tried this Durkee's stuff before. Thanks for bringing it up. Von's down here in SoCal though, not Safeway.

El Diablo / Tik - Vietnamese sandwiches (the pork banh mi, especially) are awesome. Here is a pic from this place in SF's chinatown, called "Vietnam Rest." -

Impossible.

Example: When you make cocktail sauce, if the sauce's final color is closer to ketchup than horseradish, add more horseradish and a touch more lemon juice.

Bacon makes virtually every sandwich better.

Dids 01-04-2006 07:28 PM

Re: Sandwich tips thread

The bacon statement is only true if you're preparing the bacon or the place at which you are eating uses good bacon. Bad bacon is like doubly bad, because you're missing out on a bacon opportunity and having to eat greasy leather.
