According to PokerTips.org and Wikipedia the first online pokerroom was Planet Poker in 1998, though neither specifically talks of NLHE. Don't know if that helps. Are you doing research for your book?

I would guess 2002. I can definitely remember in 2000-early 2001 that there wasn't NL online. Or if there was, it was micro limit on some tiny site I hadn't heard of.

I read somewhere (on RGP maybe?) that Chris Ferguson used to play on IRC for real money in the early 90's.

I believe Paradise introduced NL games around Summer of 2001. They used the current 100BB / 20BB min buy ins that are standard

They offered no limit in their play release?

I remember playing for real money on Planetpoker in 98 and everyone wanted them to start a no limit game, but the expectation of collusion in a no limit game was too great back then. There were only 200 or so money players peak, no hand histories available, and one table max. Man, how times have changed...

Re: When was no-limit hold\'em first played online?

Well, your question doesn't specify playing for real money, so I thought I'd mention that IRC Poker had online NL HE games for play money in the mid 90's (can't recall exactly when NL first became available). As for the first real money NL game online, I have no idea.

You might be able to find some info on RGP. Best guess for real money, UB in 2001.

It was late 2002 on Paradise. The games were not popular at first. Highest limit was $200 NL I think. You could probably find the threads about it in the archives.

Re: When was no-limit hold\'em first played online?

Yeah, I played a lot of paradise in 2001 and there was no NL. 2001 (maybe late 2000?) was when they first introduced sit n gos and that was all limit, as was the cash games.

fyi paradise was not the first with NL, they added it only in response to.. someone else doing it. Planet or UB, not sure.

I distinctly remember UB & Stars having NL before Paradise did. I'm not sure which of them had it first though (or even if they were the 1st for real money NLHE.) I think old school Dobrosoft (ACR during the Promo Buck days) had NLHE before Paradise too.

Re: When was no-limit hold\'em first played online?

I am pretty sure Stars had Pot Limit first for real money before No limit. I have hand histories from 2001. $100 max.

I actually think UB was first with NL, and if I reme, ber correctly it was very small like $50 max.

There may have been other sites I was not aware of but, I am sure about those 2.

I'm pretty sure that neither planet nor paradise was the first to have nl.

Were paradise's sit n gos the first tournaments?

Do you mean for real money? If not, then a small group us were playing for Etherbucks on IRC chat in 1994.

I think Paradise was the first site to offer SNGs, around '99 or 2000.

As for PL/NL real money cash games online--I remember 'Stars having them more or less from their kickoff, which would be late 2001; UB may have been first for all I know, but I didn't start playing there until much later on, so I can't say for sure.

Re: When was no-limit hold\'em first played online?

A little off topic, but I can remember when Party's biggest NL game was 200 NL. There was only like 2 tables of it, and the wait list was such a pain in the ass. I wish I still had the hand history, but I saw 2 SOB's get it in with about 3K a piece top set over middle set for the biggest pot I've ever seen in terms of buy-ins. Still one of the most disgusting hands I've ever seen online.

Also, which one of you mofo's is "surferrick"? Anybody who played Party back in the day must recognize this guy. He used to sit 200 NL 24/7 when that was the highest game they had.

Absolutely correct. I should have made this distinction more clear when I posted--we had sort of wandered off the OP's question (when was the first NL/PL game spread online), and had started also talking about when the first SNGs had been spread. Yes, those first Paradise SNGs were definitely limit holdem--shortly after that, they added SNGs for all the other forms of poker they were spreading at that time as well (stud, stud/8, omaha, etc).
