Re: nyc home games
my home game is very friendly, mostly made up of guys I grew up with (i'm 32).
We used to have 6-10 guys, now we are down to 4-6. We play $5 and $10 sit and go's and .25/.50 PL. |
Re: nyc home games
I'd love to play in in a NYC home game as well. Although Staten Island is a little too far for me, I'd be willing to travel to Manhattan and anywhere in Brooklyn close to a subway stop.

Re: nyc home games
I'm also looking for a home game anywhere in Manhattan/Brooklyn close to a subway stop. I'm looking for a completely legal rake-free relaxed game.
|
Re: nyc home games
okay... so there are a few of so far... anyone willing to host a game... i don't have the space... otherwise i would. Anyone down for a beer to talk about it and further plan it or drink a beer... PM me.
|
Re: nyc home games
I'd also be in, but I also can't host myself (studio condo). Please include me in PMs if a host appears, thanks.
|
Re: nyc home games
i like where this is going.
|
Re: nyc home games
I'm also in a studio and don't know if I'd have room, at best I could squeeze 5 or 6 people around a coffee table. I'm down for a beer to discuss it, I'm not around this week and weekend but after that any time is good for me. Or if you get together sooner you can count me in for a game.

[ QUOTE ]
I'm also looking for a home game anywhere in Manhattan/Brooklyn... I'm looking for a completely legal... game. [/ QUOTE ] Actually, there is no such thing as a completely legal poker game in New York State. If you read the NYS Penal Law, ARTICLE 225--GAMBLING OFFENSES, you can find the following paragraph: [ QUOTE ] 4. "Advance gambling activity." A person "advances gambling activity" when, acting other than as a player, he engages in conduct which materially aids any form of gambling activity. Such conduct includes but is not limited to conduct directed toward the creation or establishment of the particular game, contest, scheme, device or activity involved, toward the acquisition or maintenance of premises, paraphernalia, equipment or apparatus therefor, toward the solicitation or inducement of persons to participate therein, toward the actual conduct of the playing phases thereof, toward the arrangement of any of its financial or recording phases, or toward any other phase of its operation. One advances gambling activity when, having substantial proprietary or other authoritative control over premises being used with his knowledge for purposes of gambling activity, he permits such to occur or continue or makes no effort to prevent its occurrence or continuation. [/ QUOTE ] In plain English, by inviting people to play poker you are "advancing a gambling activity" and therefore you are in violation of the law, as quoted "... toward the solicitation or inducement of persons to participate..." Furthermore, there is part that says "... One advances gambling activity when, having substantial proprietary or other authoritative control over premises being used with his knowledge for purposes of gambling activity, he permits such to occur or continue or makes no effort to prevent its occurrence or continuation." This means that if people play poker at your home, and you permit such activity or do nothing to stop it, you are advancing a gambling activity". Don't get me wrong. I do not say weather or not a agree with this law. I am only saying that this is what the law says in the books. So, it is true that by hosting a home poker game you do not "profit from gambling," which is a violation of the NYS law, but you are still "advancing a gambling activity," which is also a violation of the law, in NY State. The players, however, are not breaking any laws because there is nothing in the law that says you can't play. Don't shoot me. I didn't write those laws. I am only quoting them. |
Re: nyc home games

Re: nyc home games
Hey Guys,
I live on LI and work in Brooklyn. I would love to get in on a home game... let me know if anything comes of it. Also, I have the room to host, but it's a 40 minute LIRR ride from Penn or Flatbush... But still, If people were willing to travel, Long Beach smells nicer than Staten Island ;-) |
Re: nyc home games
There is a group of people I know in Brooklyn who have home games. 20-40 dollar buyin tournaments followed by cash games, all rake free (well maybee a few bucks comes out for the host to buy sodas) and in private apartments. PM me your email and I'll send it to the hosts so you can get the info.

Re: nyc home games

Re: nyc home games
Hey guys, I live in Queens and work in Brooklyn. I'd be willing to play a home game but nothing lower than .5/1 or 1/2 nlhe.
PM me if something comes up. |
Re: nyc home games
i think this thread needs a bump
|
Re: nyc home games
I think somebody needs to take initiative and organize a game. But that person needs to have a place to play, which seems to be the main stumbling block.
|
Re: nyc home games
try the groups here:
http://poker.meetup.com I just moevd back to NY after three years in Los Angeles and was ablr to find a couple games in the groups there. Actually, trying the first one this week on this specific group: http://poker.meetup.com/1315/ Its at a bar in Manhattan. I can report back if its any good if people are still interested. |
Re: nyc home games
I am in Elmont, (Nassau/Queens border), I have chips and a poker "tabletop" but I don't have a place to play. I would be interested in some home games.
|
Re: nyc home games
Please do. I'm thinking about going if there's still room tomorrow (when I'll know for sure if I can go).
Is this a rake free game? I'm a little paranoid, and only want to play in legal games. |

[/ QUOTE ] Like I said - I haven't played in it yet, but I spoke to the host and it seems totally legit to me. Its at a bar, not some seedy place. I think there is a $25 fee to play, which goes to paying the bar to rent the room, and you get two drink tickets. Not a raked game. My movers are now showing up Thursday (was supposed to be Monday - clowns) so I may not actually make this one. In any event, I wouldn't be too paranoid about it given its at a bar. If you make it and I don't, please post a review. Are you Jeremy? Saw a new ergistrant and assume that's you. I'm Josh - registered on 8/24. |
Re: nyc home games
I'm in Staten Island, willing to play there, in Brooklyn, and in NJ if necessary. I would have myself and my fiance, looking to play for some decent stakes, tournaments preferable. I'd like to find a good game, so hit me up, I've sent a couple of PM's.

Re: nyc home games
I've given up on this thread. I'm looking for a game (and may be moving to an apartment where I could host a game) so if somebody wants a Manhattan/Jersey City/Hoboken/west Brooklyn player please PM me.

Re: nyc home games
There is a thriving low-stakes home game community in Manhattan. Look on CL and you shall find.
|
Re: nyc home games
what is CL?

Re: nyc home games
Craigslist. Also try homepokergames.com if you wish.

Re: nyc home games
I have been contacting my NYS Senator and Assemblyman to push them to legalize Calif style cardrooms so that we can play anytime that we want without going to AC or CT. I hope you do too!
Our politicians know that there is an active underground poker industry in NYC (LI too!)and in an opionion letter written in 1999 on the legality of Turning Stone Casino's poker room by Barry W. Brandon, General Counsel of the State of New York Racing And Wagering Board said as much and added footnotes to NY Times articles verifying it! "There is no serious dispute that poker is played within private homes and public locations throughout the State of New York. We concluded, therefore, that the requirement contained in section 2703(7)(A)(ii), for the game to be “played at any location n the state,” is also satisfied. [3]" Footnote[3] The Oneida Indian Nation submitted evidence to show that poker clubs are operated in the State of New York. According to the submission documents, in New York City, there are dozens of private clubs that offer poker games. See Francis X. Clines, Tell A Lie? No. But Gambling? Count Him In, N.Y. Times, February 20, 1994 at Sec. 1, pg. 39, Column 1. Another recent New York Times article stated, “New Yorkers can play poker . . . in joist around Manhattan that require a membership fee and charge for rent for occupying a chair.” Walter Goodman, My New York; Where Your Destiny Is in Your Hands and the Pot’s the Limit, N.Y. Times, Sept. 26, 1997 at Sec. E, Part 2, Page 45. I would love to go to a nicely lit card room and not worry about being robbed or have to drive 3 hours to play. |
