Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
I have decided to play poker professionally. I will submit my resignation letter on Monday, June 4th.
I was wondering what I should tell my boss and coworkers. Should I tell the truth and state that I'm going to play poker professionally or make something else up (i.e. such as taking time to travel)? I want to leave on good terms and would like to have the door left open for me if I choose to return. My boss and coworkers know I play poker but not as much or well as I do. Any good advice would be greatly appreciated. P.S. Please don't give me advice on whether to go pro or not because I have already decided. |
Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
Tell them you need to take time to yourself to decide what you want to do. A white lie kind of but still the truth
|
Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
tell them you are going to become an online investor
|
Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
pretty much anything but the truth works, why do people always ask this [censored] question. I assume you know how to bend the truth or lie to GET the job in an interview or whatever, not that hard to think up something that will meet your needs.

Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
THERE IS NO NEED TO LIE JUST TELL HIM YOU NEED TO PERSUE OTHER INTREST.IF he asks tell him it personal, or you would perfer not to say.
|
Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
Why do you need to lie or hide the truth at all?
When I went pro, I told everyone at work the truth and they were really interested, impressed even. It's not the same as leaving for another company (which always causes a little resentment) because they realise that you are going to do something that (seems at least) really interesting, almost like a dream job. My ex-boss says she still uses me in presentations as an example of somebody who followed their dream (LOL). Have you any reason to think that they would react in a negative way? |
Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
you are asking this question for a reason? Sounds like you are not proud of your selection. good luck...

Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
Tell him the truth, the job demands too many hours, the pay sucks, the benefits suck, and he sucks as a boss.
That's what you wanna say anyway, so WHY THE HELL ARE YOU ASKING US? |
Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
Tell him that you're going to nurse mentally challenged people because you really feel the urge to help the unfortunate people.

Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
Why do ppl always tend to overcomplicate this stuff. Here's what I said:
"I quit." Do you think anyone really gives a [censored] whether you'll be there or not? |
Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
Doesn't anyone here think gambling for a living is morally wrong? How are you bettering society? Taking money from others without providing a service should not make you feel good and only evil people would think gambling for a living is ok. I feel bad for you my friend, don't quit, you'll regret it on your death bed.

Lets face it, most people don't get a job to make society better. Thats silly. Most people get jobs to 1. Make money, and possibly 2. Do something they enjoy |
Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
Agreed. I don't give a crap about my contribution to society since I live in a country with a lot of retarded buffoons who destroy everything what we would contribute to the society anyway.
But if I my job pays the same as playing poker, I'd rather have my job because it's more fun and more social. Also, a poker player DOES better society in some way. You pay rake, and therefore increase the GNP of the country of the casino. You also provide entertainment for the fish at your table who play for fun. |

Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
Must be getting levelled here surely. How could somebody who thinks gambling for a living is evil rack up 316 posts on a poker forum?

[/ QUOTE ] I don't really think that this guy has a quandry on his hands here. I think that he gets a kick out of telling people that he's going pro. Makes him feel cool. Then there is the attention that he gets from this thread. Someone with the emotional fortitude to play poker professionally and succeed does truly have the quandry that is posed here. |

Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
If your gonna play professionally I hope you have done some math and also hope youll play mostly live???
You don't have to tell work anything. The day they don't have work for you, do you think they will come up with a story for you? No they will just send you home. To be on good terms requires a 2 week notice. Type up a one or two sentence note and turn it it. "I resign" usually covers it. Typically, most places will just relieve you then. Depending. I hope you have at least 100k to start, and about another 50 to support shlt. Plus living expenses covered for at least 6 months. Good luck. |
Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
you should tell the truth obviously.
|
Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
"Goodbye" ?
|
Re: Going Pro, What should I tell the boss?
You're under no obligation to tell him anything. If you think he'll be cool with it, tell him the truth. If not, or if you don't have a close enough rapport with him, say the general "I've chosen to pursue other options."

Ok, to respond to the first quote, it is possilbe to make a positive contribution as a poker player. Look at Barry Greenstein, giving his tournament winnings to charity... I'd call that benefiting society. It all depends on the person. We each can choose to make a difference, or choose not to make a difference. It's individual choice. Where we happen to be employed really doesn't matter. It's what you choose to do with your available resources that reflect on your contribution. Some people like Barry give to Charity. Others donate their time to help others. The point is that you shouldn't consider yourself limited by your profession. Think outside the box. You CAN make a difference... if you really want to. |

If your gonna play professionally I hope you have done some math and also hope youll play mostly live??? [/ QUOTE ] I can make more money playing online with less of a bankroll spending less time per day playing. I see no reason to mostly play live, unless you enjoy it more. You can practice better table selection playing online, and also play in a more comfortable environment for yourself. [ QUOTE ] I hope you have at least 100k to start, and about another 50 to support shlt. Plus living expenses covered for at least 6 months. [/ QUOTE ] 150k total to start? wtf. no way you need that much. You can earn a good living at 200nl and 400nl And you don't need a 100k bankroll. Most people on here who are pro don't mostly play live and didn't need to start with a 100k bankroll |
