How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
Some new people moved into the fourplex across the street from my house. Their garage is immediately across from my driveway. They've been parking one car in their garage, and putting their other car directly in front of their garage (which obviously isn't a legal parking space). It makes it incredibly difficult to back out of my driveway, especially for my wife in her SUV. In fact, the previous neighbor used to park there until my wife smashed into his car (which of course I paid for, because being parked illegally doesn't absolve us from the damage to his car). There is always legal street parking within 50 yards of the building. Here's a diagram:
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3.../situation.jpg How nitty is it to ask that they stop parking in front of their own garage? I really don't want to be a dick about it, but I also don't want to pay another $500 when my wife inevitably hits their car. There's a reason they put these things directly across from one another. I'm correct to talk to them/leave a note about this, right? |

Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
I would talk to them in person, and not nitty at all imo.

Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
This is marginal. If your street is very narrow and it's really difficult to back out then I think casually mentioning it to them is ok. It seems like they ought to be able to park in their garage. It's a little nitty, but I would probably do the same thing. People interfering with my ability to move my car irritates me to no end so I think you're fine with this.

Talk to man of the house, make many bad women driver jokes, both laugh, man will move car, all will be well.

What's your relationship with them like so far? How much, if any, do you care about future neighbor goodwill?

Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
Is this a side street or a main road? Why can't your wife just back into the driveway? Although you say its not a legal spot, if the police don't seem to mind, why should they have to move because you're wife is a bad driver?
I guess there is no harm in asking them, but if you can manage and its just her hitting them because she sucks at driving, then I wouldn't blame them for thinking "Wtf theres plenty of room?" Also, I'm shocked that she is bad female driver who has a huge SUV that she can't manage. PS- Be careful. If your neighbor is a ninja, there's no telling how he might react. |

Although I was grilling yesterday while they were parking and glared at them a little, which I regret. I would've talked to them then, but I was 3-4 scotches into my day and thought it would be wise to do this while sober. |
Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
To address a couple of questions:
-The street is VERY narrow. It's a side street. -My wife has a big SUV because we have a 2 year-old and I want her to be at the front of the car-size arms race. She doesn't suck that hard at driving, it really is tricky getting in/out when they park there. -I'm sure the police would only ticket there if they got a complaint. I don't intend to have their car ticketed. |
Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
very nitty imo. if someone asked me to not park in front of my own house, i would laugh and walk away.

Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
Well, if they are indeed parked illegally, you can always snitch to the cops. Or, you can teach your wife how to back out of a driveway. You're call.
Edit: I see I got this in a bit late. Oh well. |

Tell them about the previous accident. They won't want their car hit.

[ QUOTE ] very nitty imo. if someone asked me to not park in front of my own house, i would laugh and walk away. [/ QUOTE ] Is it your own street as well? [/ QUOTE ] with all due respect towards the OP's wife, are we assuming that she is unable to back out of her driveway without turning the wheel? Also, if she drives a long SUV (I am guessing a Suburban), why can't she crank the wheel and take it down the curb a bit? I suggest that if she is not able to get out of her own drive way, perhaps a smaller car is called for. What happens if the neighbors car is on either side of his driveway parked "legally"? Does she back straight up into the front of the neighbors driveway and then turn the wheel to proceed down the street? I will assume for the sake of arguement that parking is aloud on only one side of this narrow street. Why can't she angle out sooner and proceed? |
Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
I'm not understanding this. Why would they park in front of their own driveway, thus blocking their second car in? It doesn't make sense from their standpoint, considering as you say they could park up or down the street less than 50yds away tops. Is there something else going on here that would make them want to park the car at that particular spot, like say a sloped driveway and they play basketball a lot or something?
Edit- if, based on your diagram, their house is directly up against the side of the road then never mind... |

Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
either talk to him using the woman driver angle, or just explain your situation to the cops (i.e. don't say hey can u ticket this car kthx, say well theres this illegal car blocking my driveway and i already hit it once, etc)
|
Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
You should talk to them. if it was me, I would probably just get silently angry at them, allow the frustration to build for years and years, until one day I got so drunk and angry that I hucked a whisky bottle through their windshield, a la Homer.

Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram

Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
Your neighbor's car is a lovely orange color.
Saying something to them is completely reasonable, to me. No reason to be an [censored]. I have problems with neighbors doing similar [censored], and usually all it takes is a knock on the door and a five minute chat. People live in bubbles oblivious to the world around them, but when you point out something they're doing is making life worse for you, most people are cool about it. If they are [censored], then just call in the nuke strikes. |
Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
easy answer, just have your wife park in front of your driveway, that way she can get out easy with no problem. Also then they will feel your pain. Your wife drives a big SUV so they will no doubt have a tough time getting out.

[/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] BT, That's not a driveway, that's a garage, it comes right up to the street. The driveway on that side of the street is to the right of the garage I pictured. The legal parking spaces are easily 10-15 feet away. If they're not parked there, you just pull right out. Yes, that is the color of the neighbor's car. It's an Element. |
Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
I think actual pics would give everybody a better idea how nitty this really is/isn't.
|
Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
I was going to come down on your side until I saw your wife drives one of those obnoxious huge SUVs, which she probably doesn't have full ability to handle.
|
Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
Talk to them about it. They may not have any idea of the stress they are causing parking there. If they are decent people, they won't mind changing their parking arrangement.
If they aren't decent people, then you won't have to feel guilty about getting the police involved. I doubt it would come to this. Unless you live across from By-Tor. |

[/ QUOTE ] Why is it that you're ragging on somebody for their bold sense of entitlement at being able to exit their driveway and not the [censored] who's parking in a non-spot? Imagine that LFS talks to the neighbor, and he gets riled up and makes the following post on 2p2 "So I've been parking in front of my garage for a while, and it's not in a legal spot, but nobody really uses that road. My neighbor just asked me to move my car 'cause they can't get out of their driveway. I should firebomb them, right?" I don't think that goes so well. |
Re: How Nitty? Parking situation w/diagram
It really doesn't matter if his wife sucks at driving or if she shouldn't be driving an SUV. He's parked in an illegal space. It's an inconvenience for OP's wife. /end discussion
