Should I steal this money?
I am completely broke, having as usual lost this week's wages playing online poker. I spent my last £1.50 ($3) on food for Saturday-Monday. I have nothing in the cupboards except a packet of pasta (no butter, oil, garlic, sauce etc). I haven't eaten in 24 hours.
I am currently in an ongoing temporary position as a legal secretary; I've been at the firm since February. A woman just left on Friday, and from today I'm doing her role, with the option of applying for the permament post if I want to. Looking in the departed lady's drawers, I found a half-packet of biscuits and three small chocolates, which I eat without thought. I also found three sealed envelopes containing small change: £2.50 in five pence pieces, £1.70 in one pence pieces, and £2.30 in two pence pieces. The totals are written on the outsides of the envelopes. So in total there's £6.50 / $13. Can I take this money to buy myself the food to live on until payday on Friday? Yes, it would be theft. But she has left the firm and not taken this money with her, so why not? My only worry would be if she came back to say hello to her former colleagues, and remembered / asked about it, but that doesn't seem likely. If you were starving - albeit through your own fault - would you take it? Or would you try to borrow money from a friend instead? |
Re: Should I steal this money?
Wow, what a stupid story. Take this to BBV where they will rail on you because of the low amount of money involved.
Oh, and take the money and play some poker, since that's been going well. |
Re: Should I steal this money?
It's only a small amount of money, but you should never be dishonest or unethical at your job (especially a job you obviously need). It's not worth the risk. Ask friends or family for a loan, stop being such a stupid degen gambler, and get your life back on track.

Re: Should I steal this money?
Why don't you spend the money and then pay it back when you get paid on Friday?

Why don't you spend the money and then pay it back when you get paid on Friday? [/ QUOTE ] Probably because he'll lose it playing poker thinking he can make some money and pay it back. Stop being a degenerate and go to gamblers anonymous. to quote NT from the locked sober thread "OOT is not a support group". But it seems like you need one. |

Why don't you spend the money and then pay it back when you get paid on Friday? [/ QUOTE ] Yes, that seems like a good idea. I would have to get the bank to give it to me in 1ps, 2ps, 5ps though, and in the unlikely event the departed woman came back she'd see I'd opened the envelopes. I think though it is VERY VERY unlikely she will come back - I mean stuff people leave in their desks when they quit a job tends to be stuff they don't care about or expect to see again, right. Oh I've been to GA in the past, we didn't get on. I had no honest desire to quit. I've also written 10,000 words about being a degenerate in my thread in the Psychology section... |
Re: Should I steal this money?
spend less time jacking off to pics of sbrugby and durrr and actually figure out how to win at penny stakes?

Re: Should I steal this money?
Never steal anything small. You are risking your career for chump change. Beg on the street until you get enough money for a egenerate: tattoo. Then buy a copy of George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London. Then Doschevsky's the Gambler.
Some people are not cut out for poker and you are one of them. You are a great poster and you can still post. |

Re: Should I steal this money?
Jeez dude! You do get yourself in some situations don't you!
My recco is, if u have enough to scare up a bus ticket, give ALKA a ring and he'll more than likely loan you a pony for food. |
Re: Should I steal this money?
how do you not have a credit card is the real question.

[/ QUOTE ] I've borrowed money from 'Alka' too many times already; I really don't want to ever ask him again. I don't like to borrow from friends, and I count him as a friend. You know, it sucks to call someone up and have a good honeset sincere empathetic conversation, while all the time both of you know you've really called about borrowing money. It is bad for the self-esteem to borrow money and compromise friendships over it; even if you always pay back. So I would much rather take this abandoned small change, this £6.50, than ask a friend for a loan. |

One has about $6k of gambling debt on it - a year and a half ago I used it to play on £10/£20, was about $6k in the credit and ended up $6k in the hole. Fortunately with the help of the Citizen's Advice Bureau I got them to freeze it and not require any payments for 18 months. The other card I have about $700 on, and I can spend $120 on it when a payment goes through on Thursday. Generally though, credit cards are a bad idea for people like me! |

Based upon your OP, you probably should modify your forum name at some point.

Re: Should I steal this money?
Here's what I should do:
1. Stop playing poker forever (I can tell myself it's for six months). 2. Write a novel about a degenerate gambler, squalid and phonily romantic. Put all my energies into this, and try to get it published (I do have a few connections - until not long ago I was an Eng Lit PhD student at one of the top schools in the country). 3. Profit! |

Just because of
"Theft is theft, karma is karma." I vote take it, just to prove people who believe in crap like karma wrong. |
Re: Should I steal this money?
Yeah I'm taking it. I went to the bank and got it changed up. When I get paid, I'll tell a girl who knows her "Your friend left £6.50 in change in her drawer, I got it changed up for her as I was going to the bank anyway" and pay it back that way.

I believe his policy is similar to mine when I was in London town. I had a neverending supply of score, pony, and bullseye loans for those who desperately RQD them AND who paid them back eventually prior to asking for another loan. Either Way good luck. |
Re: Should I steal this money?
No need to steal.
Dumpsters have tons of free and good food. Try bakeries and donut shops, or buffet restaurant dumpsters. Food is free, you just have to know where to look for it. Free booze and hookers are trickier. |
Re: Should I steal this money?

Re: Should I steal this money?
WTF, of course take the money. You don't have any food! Then when you quit gambling and get your next paycheck, get in touch with the old secretary, tell her you found the change and took it to your bank to get bills. then mail her the money.
