$30K Missing from Absolute Poker Account!! Help Please.

$30K just went missing from my girlfriend's poker account at Absolute Poker. She hadn't played there in a month. Her balance used to be $31,623.

A week ago she requested a withdrawal of $1000 from her account via mail at midnight. At noon the next day there is a bizarre transaction in the Account History which says:

Type Amount Fee Transaction#
----- ------- --- --------
[Adjustment] -30,622.98 0.00 0

Then 5 hours later it says that the $1K withdrawal request was cancelled by agent.

Absolute did not even send an email acknowlodging any of this!!

Does anyone have any ideas how she should proceed? We are waiting on an email back from Absolute. We can't find a phone number to reach them at. Does anyone know how to contact them via phone?

My girlfriend is very panicked right now, understandably so, so any advice would be appreciated.

Does anyone know what this [Adjustment] could mean?

By the way, there hasn't been any suspicious activity on her account. And I do not even have an account there.

I have no idea why the money is missing but why would you leave $31K just sitting in the account for a month?

And TBH it looks like they made some weird mistake, she requested 1k and they took all but 1k.

Re: $30K Missing from Absolute Poker Account!! Help Please.

Okay she got in contact with Absolute and apparently they seized the money because she made some large deposits without adequate playing time. This was partially due to the Neteller Canada fiasco where she needed to move money on to a few different sites she wanted to play at. But then she hasn't ended up playing at Absolute as much as expected.

So apparently if she sends them ID and a utility bill then the money will be released again.

In my opinion they handled this situation terribly though. They claimed just now that they sent her an email about it and called several times. But there was no email sent and no phone messages from Absolute.

Hopefully it all works out okay but I'm definitely not impressed with their security team.

Yeah, that's a touchy subject. I taught her to play 25NL a couple of years ago and she has moved up in limits a lot faster than me. So now she plays 2/4 and 3/6 full time while I'm too scared to move past 1/2 in my spare time.

But hey, at least I'm winning so it's all gravy. Also I've read 10 poker books, she's read none. I study and think about the game, she does neither, plays by feel and doesn't even know basic poker math. But she never tilts.

Anyways thanks for the help guys.

And I agree with the other poster that it was stupid to leave that much money sitting in an account for a month. The Neteller fiasco really caused a lot of problems and we didn't want to get money locked up in there, so now it's locked in Absolute instead.

Yeah I think you might be right.

Wow, how can we trust poker sites with this much money if they can make these kind of mistakes? Isn't that absurd?

Also I understand if they are skeptical and freeze the account to prevent further withdrawals or playing. But they really shouldn't just remove $30K from someone's account right? Especially without a phone call or email.

Wow, glad I don't play at that site, that's some sketchy business.

AP took $12,000 from my account one time, in nearly identical fashion, it showed up as a [-$12,000 adjustment.] I nearly had a heart attack, but after I called them up, they fixed it and the money was put back into my account.

I asked them how this had happened, and their response puzzles me to this day. They said "we were entering you into the $12k guaranteed tournament, and someone messed up."

AP is an absolute joke. Just call their VIP line and hopefully things will get straightened out. A secondary piece of advice is to get off AP. They're a bunch of swindlers. Sucks that their NL tables are some of the best around the net for US players right now. I left anyways.

Yeah well I'm assuming these situations always sound fishy. Basically the situation is very similar to what Slim is describing happened to him.

Yes it was an unnecessarily large amount of money for a $600 NL player to deposit and keep on a poker site. Like many Canadian players, we were both panicked by the Neteller fiasco when they shut down operations with little warning. I told her to get all of her money off Neteller ASAP into trusted poker sites so it doesn't get seized like it was for American players. Absolute was obviously a huge mistake. They do allow very large deposits though, and apparently it is so that they can seize them with no notification.

Anyways, for your guys sake hopefully Absolute keeps the money so you can all have a good laugh about how "fishy" the situation sounds. Whatever, I thought this was a decent place to ask people for advice how to handle these dreaded situations.

The sad thing is that the poker sites can seize this money and there is no possible legal recourse.

Absolute is still being very difficult about this situation and are claiming not to have received the ID verification emails that she sent. I would strongly recommend that people not play there based on this situation alone. If they seize your money then I'm sure it will be because you're a scammer and your story sounds "fishy" though.

Okay, this was obviously the wrong forum to come to for help. You can choose to disbelieve me if you want, but I'm telling you that we're both just cash game grinders, in my case in my spare time and for her as a full time job. So if this happened to her then it could happen to anyone in my opinion.

Anyways, for the investigative geniuses, why would I create an Absolute account in her name when I don't have one there of my own? There are sites where we both have accounts but I've just never felt the need to get an account at Absolute.

If you are honest, there is not much we can do. Contact Absolute support, call them, e-mail them. Be persistent as hell.

However, Absolute support is horrible. I would be real scared in your position.

Best of luck!

Well here are the primary facts:

1) She deposited money to their site but didn't break any of their terms and conditions. Unless it was something very obscure, I doubt they have rules against deposits if they allow newish players to deposit $10K at a time. Some of the more sensible poker sites only allow small deposits at first to prevent problem gambling instead of thinking as a cash grab.

2) They seized $30K from her account without sending an email or leaving a phone message. There was no message upon logging into her account, only an obscure note in the transaction history about an adjustment. Her account was still left open with $1K left in it for some bizarre reason, instead of just locking her account if they thought it was suspicious.

3. If she hadn't noticed this missing money it would have gone undetected forever. There was no notification whatsoever and she was still able to play in the games. Realistically this couldn't have happened, but if the amounts were reversed with $1K taken from her account then she might not have noticed and would have been defrauded out of this money.

So do you honestly believe that they handled this in a reasonable fashion? Whatever, I'm not trying to convince you not to play there, I honestly couldn't care any less. But I would not recommend that site to a friend based on their actions in this case.

For what it's worth, Absolute finally acknowledged her ID and have said they will be reinstating the funds. She does not want to play at that site anymore, so hopefully they will add it back to her account and assist her in getting her money off.

This is just another warning not to keep a lot of money on any poker site.

When an account is frozen at AP it shows that all money has been removed from the account. But this does not mean they are confiscating the money. It is just an automatic process by the system. Once the account is unfrozen the money is adjusted automatically back into the account.

No, she didn't play enough.

However they have added the money back to her account after many phone calls to them. They wanted to monitor her account every day to ensure she was playing often enough at high enough stakes. I'm not sure where the poker sites come off making these kind of demands. Does that seem unfair to anyone else or just to me? Are people not allowed to deposit some money and then change their mind about how often they will play at a site? She has found much better sites to play at recently. Or is she supposed to just move there permanently for a winrate of 1 BB/100 instead of 6 BB/100 elsewhere?

Regardless, Absolute agreed to just close down her account permanently and let her withdraw her money. Based on other threads that I've read on Absolute this doesn't sound like a sure thing though because there have been tons of cashout problems.

Anyways, this is a real shocker, but it seems that poker sites make it dead easy for people to deposit huge amounts of money but close to impossible to actually withdraw it. Wow, it's almost like they are only happy if you gamble it all away. "Come to site XYZ and WIN!" (but good luck getting the money out.)

I think they get charged about 5% on all transaction.

$30 000*5%= $1500 in fee they pay when you deposit.

If a lot of players make large deposit and withraw without playing it get expensive for the site.

Im not 100% sure for the 5% but even at 2% it add up very quick.

You're right of course, but this is a cost of these sites doing business. I will never have sympathy for the business costs of a poker site, as long as it's within their rules and not some deliberate form of scamming them. They do also make 5% interest per year on the money held at their sites. And on top of that they charge exorbitant rake for a service that is cheap to provide in exchange for poor customer service.

So I see where the poker sites are coming from. But imagine you have $50K in Neteller and they suddenly inform you that they will be closing operations for your country in a week or so. And you know that US players have recently had their money frozen in Neteller for months due to not cashing out from there right away, even though they followed the advice given from Neteller.

What would you do in this scenario? The advice that I gave turned out to be bad. In fact Neteller has still allowed Canadians to cash out their money after the deadline and nobody's money was seized. But at the time my advice was to get all of the money out of there ASAP on to any trustworthy poker sites which would accept it.

I don't think that constitutes money laundering. That is just a cost of these gambling sites doing business (and making a killing) off of a quasi-illegal and unregulated business which may have payment processing companies jumping ship at any time. Absolute does not appear to be a trustworthy poker site.

I am a bit surprised that poker players would take the side of a poker site in a situation that has been very difficult for players to handle. Personally I have $5K locked up in Eurobet and I'm not sure how I can get that out, partially because I'm lazy. They no longer have any legit cashout methods, I don't know if I want to deal with EcoCard and I'm not looking forward to figuring out bank wires. But I am sure that they will try to screw me though because they would rather I keep that money there forever until I lose it to rake or -EV gambling.
