Summer fashion thread
Time for a new fashion thread for the summer season. I did a bit of shopping last month, picked up some sweet short sleeve shirts, but then heard after that those are out. Is it true?
I also need to find some good shorts that would be wearable at bars without looking like a backpacker. Anyone have good suggestions on where to find some nice ones? |
Re: Summer fashion thread
Short sleeve shirts are definitely not out. They are getting real popular again now after a couple of years of being not so hot. It depends of course what type of short sleeve shirt we are talking about but in general, they are very nice.
FWIW, I'm not American and I think that most Americans dress like [censored] and don't even know what fashion is all about (no offense, I'm sure some of you are in to fashion and are great dressers). Here is one from Neil Barret that I really like: http://www.luisaviaroma.com/ecnew/Co...I/049/0030.JPG |

I'd love to get some ideas for shorts if someone knows anything in this area.

Re: Summer fashion thread
Sperry Top-Siders. They are great.

Re: Summer fashion thread
If short sleeves are "out" for summer, then fashion can suck a dick.

Re: Summer fashion thread
I don't know anything about fashion at all. I'd like to start dressing better and with more style. Are there websites, magazines, books, etc. that i could read that would teach me a bit about fashion?

Re: Summer fashion thread
i don't wear short sleeve shirts that are button down - i have a bunch of them, but every time i put them on i think they look dumb. the pictured neil barret shirt looks sweet, but i have a feeling i'd have the same reaction. occassionally i'll wear one unbutttoned with a wifebeater and shorts but that's pretty rare.
if i have time later i'll take some pics of a few things. |

Are there websites, magazines, books, etc. that i could read that would teach me a bit about fashion? [/ QUOTE ] thesartorialist.com is one of the most known blogs around. A guy travels around the world (with NY as home) and photographs people on the street that dress well. You could also check out men.style.com and the articles (avoid the runway photos since that's often more 'art' than 'fashion'). Back to original topic: I'd avoid shorts as much as possible (looks horrible on 95% of men) and also short sleeve shirts (although the Neil Barret looks good above). I normally use a dress shirt were I roll up the sleeves instead. Usually looks better and you can vary how long you roll it up + you can use it with a blazer/suit. Anyone using a short sleeve shirt with a blazer should be shot. So, unless you're a kid, or look like a model and afford really fashionable shorts/shortsleeveshirts I'd go for pants+dress shirt. (choosing a light fabric it'll be almost as comfortable) |
Re: Summer fashion thread
lapoker17,
I doubt that you would have the same reaction with the Neil Barret shirt. I think I know what you mean and I am very picky when it comes to short sleeve shirts. They can easily make you look stupid, but that's generally not the case with the "high fashion ones". Kjell201, I couldn't agree more. Wear a short sleeve shirt with a blazer and you should be shot. DonkBluffer, There are plenty of good sites to check out online but it depends what you are looking for. Do you need nice clothes for work? Are you in college? What's your style? What's your budget? You could start with checking out the links in Kjell's post and if you are American, I can say with some confidence that you should drop a size or two and please stay away from oversized clothes. |

I think expensive T shirts (good material, design, usually like $30) and jeans are the way to go if you are trying to look decent but not overdressed. |

[/ QUOTE ] I'm in college. Tall, skinny, 19 year old. I live in the Netherlands. Plenty of budget I guess, since I make money playing poker. I don't really have a 'style', not yet anyways. I'm not looking to be the center of attention with my clothes. I'd prefer a more 'laid back' style, and know that whatever I'm wearing looks good on me. Now I don't really have a strong opinion when it comes to fashion, and rely on other people (sister/mom/etc.) to tell me what I should wear, which sucks. |
Re: Summer fashion thread
I really like the suits and how they fit so well on Sartorialist. How do you find a tailor to do that so well?
http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger...61810/DV60.jpg The contemporary male stuff on there is stuff I'd never go near, but the women's mostly looks really good. http://bp0.blogger.com/_qjpwnPW4c1o/.../LVEvening.jpg |

Others buy suits that fit good enough and do the small adjustments at a local tailor (that hopefully know what he's doing). Some are just lucky and are the same size as the suit was made for. (I have two rather cheap suits from the same brand that fit so well (slim fit suits) that they look like they were tailored for me) |

[/ QUOTE ] Ok, first of all you need to get rid of that undershirt! You should hardly ever use an undershirt. I never do it. If you don't have a tan, go get one. If that's not possible where you live, get it anyway (hint: solarium, fake-tan). To get a little taned can make wonders for your looks. The shirt in the picture is from a famous designer. It's not a suite shirt and it's supposed to look good without a blazer or anything like that. There are buttons on the back of both sleeves that you can't see in the picture, the collar is white and there are plenty of other details that makes this shirt awesome. You can't go to a store and expect any short sleeve shirt to fit like this one does. Brand, model, fit... it all depends. It's all about what label their from, how they are cut, how they are supposed to be worn. DonkBluffer, I know it's not easy to dress nice if you really have no clue and no real opinion but don't make it complicated. Start out with a couple of nice pair of jeans and some cool t-shirts and go from there. There are plenty of good online stores as well if you don't know where to go for this kind of stuff. |
Re: Summer fashion thread
I don't think anyone gets as lucky as the dude in the picture above...
There's no tailor that can do magic on a poorly-fitting suit; you'll have to spend enough money that you can find a suit that fits well in the first place, then take it to a skilled tailor that can make just minor adjustments. You can look tailors up on Citysearch. |

[/ QUOTE ] I feel your pain at 6', 145, and a 6'4" wingspan. I find that a good pair of jeans, tshirts, blazers, and long sleeve button down shirts for me. I have a ton of tshirts, including a good bit from threadless. When going out I'll usually wear the jeans, very rarely shorts, with a button down shirt. If I do happen to wear shorts out to a bar or something, then I always combine it with a long sleeve shirt. I think wearing a tshirt and shorts looks really goofy on me unless I'm doing something very casual. I also think short sleeve button downs look horrible on my body type |
Re: Summer fashion thread
OP:
when it comes to short sleeve button up shirts, alot depends on your body. If your in shape (nice arms) you should be wearing semi tight shirts w something like faded jeans. I would recommend Hugo Boss or Theory short sleeve shirts; linen would be best for summer (tried finding pics of shirts I was talking about but couldn't). You cant go wrong with polos either: Zegna polo http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/3871/zegnajc9.jpg |
Re: Summer fashion thread
In Atlanta people wearing shorts in bars are either FRAT-n hard, have no style, or don't care that they'd look better in long pants (read not single).

I don't really like flip flops, but I also know (think?) that tevas have worn out their welcome in the fashion world, if they ever had one. What are some alternative sandal styles that are still hot? |

These are the ones I was referring to
http://www.rainbowsandals.com/Sandbo...al_576X285.jpg The leather ones are pretty standard, and nice. Anything with a back strap is for middle school summer campers. http://www.rainbowsandals.com/Sandbo..._DB_200X98.gif edit for Wookie - if you don't like flip flops Sperry Topsiders are trendy, and look pretty good. Don't own a pair, but 1/2 of coastal North Carolina swear by them. *link* |

[ Kjell201, I couldn't agree more. Wear a short sleeve shirt with a blazer and you should be shot. [/ QUOTE ] So if you're not to wear short sleeve shirts under a blazer what are the use of non-traditional blazers? I just bought a diesel blazer that has all these zippers and is white with gray pinstripes. I'm planning on taking it with for my european trip and wearing collared dress shirts exclusively with it is impossible. I realize a lot of wannabe hipsters do the t-shirt/blazer combo but I think it can still be pulled off by some people (me). Opinion on blazer buttoned with short sleeve shirt underneath? Extra random question - cool jewelry that doesn't fall apart online got a site? |
Re: Summer fashion thread

I prefer to stick with plain khaki shorts instead. |

They aren't really dress sandals, though, so if you're an older guy looking for classy/dressy sandals, these aren't really them. For lounging around and casual wear, though, they're amazing - they look great and are really comfortable (after the break-in period), and last a long time. I'm a college student and almost always wear them (as opposed to shoes). Those white sandals are hot. I've seen only a few people with them, but they always look good. I'll have to buy some for the summer. |
