Ipods
I just bought an 80 gig video ipod and it's awesome. I love it, it's pretty much my best friend. However, it got me to thinking what is missing and what can still be done to improve it
In my opinion there are 2 things: 1. speakers. im often hanging out with friends and wanna play my ipod, but theres no speakers. id like a tiny one on the side 2. internet. this one is obvious. what do you guys think? |
Re: Ipods
Any speaker built into the ipod would suck sweaty balls. Get one of the speaker dock things if you must, or plug it into something through the headphone jack.
Internet is not obvious. What would you want to do w/ internet on an ipod? How much are you willing to pay for it? |
Re: Ipods
$100 bill printer.

Re: Ipods
i dont see how a speaker would suck, but maybe it would i don't know. id like one.
ummm. maybe surf the net when im in class, at work, on the bus, subway, etc. even dl music directly to ur ipod!!!! |
Re: Ipods
Buy one of those cases that protect it when you drop it. Or when you get 2 outered for your case $1000.
I havn't bought one yet but everyones been telling me that for the last 6 months. |

Re: Ipods
Speakers are a horrible idea - you'd never get enough sound out of them to be worth anything.
The best thing an iPod could improve on IMO would be, in order: - drag&drop file copying like a normal USB memory stick - anything but itunes - FM tuner - better quality earbuds - |
Re: Ipods
I've heard that HD-based players break down far more than flash players, so I just ordered a Sansa 8 gig flash memory based player. Not that much room in comparison, but I won't have to worry about it overheating, etc., and dying young.

Honestly, I don't really see anything else that will get added to the iPod. Eventually, they will stop making the iPod Videos and only sell the iPhone and iPod Nano. |
Re: Ipods
Yeah by far the biggest problem with iPods is that you have to use iTunes. I refuse to install that flaming turd on my precious computer.

Re: Ipods
definitely wireless......
i really think ipods will change and keep changing, it's such a major industry |

Quicktime files bug because it means I have to install iTunes, which in addition to being a general PITA does what all the other media downloads do - tries to get you to use their software as the default for everything, sign you up for stuff, add icons to desktop, quicklaunch, stapled to your forehead, etc. It's nearly as annoying as spyware. Piggybacking Quicktime onto iTunes is a clever marketing ploy, but it also makes me hate them. |
Re: Ipods
with ur support, tuq, it's a lock

3. Not breaking after 6 months of routine use [/ QUOTE ] This really depends on what you do with your ipod. If you have a high-capacity ipod with a HDD in it, do NOT use it for activities. Running with an 80GB iPod is the nut low. If you want a running/exercise device, use a nano or (I recommend) the Shuffle. The video is best for things like riding in transit, or as a mass storage. They tend to break because people knock them around when they are playing, and that will cause problems for *any* hdd, not just iPods. |
Re: Ipods
Also adding:
- SD card expansino memory support. It would be nice to carry a handful of 2-8gb SD cards and plug them in on the fly. - Wireless is a good idea - just 802.11b/g/n or even bluetooth. |
Re: Ipods
wireless would be the nuts with redraws. whoever says otherwise clearly never felt the need to whack it at work or in class
|
Re: Ipods
I don't mind iTunes.
Anyways, get a docking station if you want to be able to play it around the house. It's the best. Besides... if you really want the internet, just get an iPhone when it comes out. |

Re: Ipods
Rumor has been going on for months that Apple is going to be coming out with a new "true" iPod video, that is similar to the iPhone, but is only a video and audio player without all the extra phone stuff. Might be HD or might be flash. Within two years all of this stuff is probably going to be flash anyway, and wireless of somekind is inevitable.
But, if you want an internet enabled device, get the iPhone. I want my iPod to be small, have a screen the size of the player (like the iPhone), and get good battery life. I am plenty happy syncing by plugging it in through USB and don't want a bunch of additional stuff added on. Alot of the ideas so far don''t make much sense, why would you need a 2-8gb expansion slot on an 80 gb player. Apple rules the market b/c of its similicity and elegance. Everything you add will burn more battery and make the player bulkier. |

If a 4 gig is too small tough, buy an 80; at which point a 1-8 gig enhancement will be worthless and annoying. |
Re: Ipods
tuq/others:
I used to feel the same about Quicktime/iTunes. But it's not really that bad. QT's default file associations are only QT audio/video/picture files. It doesn't (anymore) try to take over mp3, avi, or any other common non-apple ones. The only minor annoyance is the taskbar icon, which is easy enough to disable with a right-click->settings. As far as iTunes - I don't really get the bad rap. I think it's a very good player. I don't even have an iPod. I'm weird - I use iTunes to manage my library/playlists, but listen to everything with Winamp. The only thing that stops me from using it as a player is that I can't shrink it down to a slim bar and/or auto-hide the playlist like winamp can. It does lack the open source add ons, but I don't think I even use any in Winamp. I love that it has built-in volume normalizer and gapless playback, which I could never seem to get working effectively in Winamp. |
Re: Ipods
The expansion slot is a good idea. For one, some people specifically want a flash-based player vs a drive. For another, microSD capacities are going up so fast - a year from now you will probably be able to get at least 8gb cards, doubling the capacity of a nano.
Right now, people who bought a 2gb sansa a year ago can like quadruple their capacity for $25. That's a lot cheaper than going out and buying a whole new 30-80gb player. |
Re: Ipods
Plus what makes a Nano great is their size. I don't want a slot for a memory card making the bigger. Plus it is going to cost $100 to jump the capacity up a few gigs, not worth it. I just change up the music on my Nano anytime i want to. You are never going to listen to 2000 songs the Nano can hold in between being by your computer.
