Rebuy tournaments: Adding/rebuying?

I played my first rebuy tourney yesterday somehow managed to cash. But I was wondering should you always rebuy? Should you always add on? Should I essentially just play real tight the until the rebuy period is over? It seemed to be very very loose last night until the rebuy was over.

Like mikey said, that question has been covered thoroughly in other posts in both this forum and the MTT Strategy forum. There's also information about this in the FAQ and Anthology posts that are stickied at the top.

my opinion is that it doesnt worth another buy in to get 1500 more chips or an add on of 2000. i say that because it worths more to play a new tourney if you lose with a new 1500 chips which gives a place on that tourney from pay a whole buy in for some more chips...anyone with the same opinion?

The thinking is that if it's +EV to play the tourney, then every rebuy/addon is also +EV. Obviously if someone is a losing player, then not rebuying/adding on reduces losses. Rebuys/addons are probably better than a new tourney because of the dead money in the prize pool (and maybe because of fish with a lot of chips at your table.) Additionally, I find that I can't just fire up tourneys with 50k+ prize pools for $20 whenever I want, so it's not like that's really an option.

This isn't a matter of opinion but rather one of expected value vs. rate of return on your investment. Sorry to say this, but you don't have anything resembling a clue about the value of a rebuy or add-on in a rebuy tournament. You should definitely read the same threads we directed the original poster toward.

Poker is not a game of luck, opinions and gut feelings.

Actually in many freezeout tourneys that is precisely my strategy...obviously not to the extreme as in a rebuy, but I'll gladly take a coinflip early to try and get a stack going.

IT is a MUST, if you are going to to buy in for say 10$ and recieve 1500 in chips, then why would you not spend 10$ (same price) for 2000 in chips for the addon?

Reguarding the rebuy compared to a freezeout. There is no comparison. Jow in the Rebuy you are trying to gain more chips early, as opposed to the more "steady as she goes" style of a Freezeout. Your knowledge from FOs is getting in the way of looking at the Rebuy tourneys

but say you have 3000 chips at the add on time. by paying another buy in for 2000 more chips how much is the +ev you earn? is it so big to worth the buy in for that? (while 1500 chips on a new tourney its a lot +ev.)

[/ QUOTE ]

If you start with only 1500 chips the first hand and manage to double through a player with 3000 chips you have missed out on 1500 chips. This amount grows exponentially with each double-up that follows. Missing out on 1500 chips at the start of the tournament could translate to missing out on 48000 chips a few double ups later.

Your logic would be ok if people only rebought once and added on once, but the reality is that many players are over-aggressive specifically because of the ability to rebuy and end up spending way more than just one initial rebuy and add-on... while others will drop out in the first hour creating what is essentially dead money in the prizepool. This is a HIGHLY +EV situation for any skilled player. Let's not forget that most of the online rebuy tournaments have prize pools and payouts that rival freezeouts with significantly higher buyins.

Honestly this point isn't worth arguing so I'll just reiterate that this has been covered in depth... and even the 2004 world champion, Greg Raymer himself, agrees with this sentiment. If you do a bit of reading and searching in the strategy forum and the archives you can find a lot of information about this topic... including a post where Greg addresses this exact issue and talks about the math behind it.

OP, you're clueless about this and you should really consider doing some reading on the subject before making yourself look like any more of a fool in a public forum. Your opinions are flat out wrong and you have nothing to back them up other than your gut feeling.

Maybe all of you guys should get off your high horse and admit that you are wrong. The sticky is wrong. The entire forum is wrong. No rebuys/addons FTW!!!!
