Things NITS do...
I feel as though I've been playing real nitty lately, however, I'm having trouble identifying all the behaviors that would warrant this characterization. Can we construct a list here of the top ten things NITS do?
I'm thinkin along the lines of playing too tight preflop. Not raising good hands, etc. Anything a little more specific would be great too. Thanks. |
Re: Things NITS do...
Assigning too tight ranges to villains, consequently not calling enough, not value betting enough. Especially in 6max, I actually think I'm too nitty on the river.
Overprotecting made hands. You don't want to eliminate all action, you want to invite bad calls (while taking into account implied odds) Not 3-betting AK. Some people only 3-bet AA/KK. This is wrong imo, especially at 6max. |

Re: Things NITS do...
Did the definition of a NIT change over the last few months? I was under the impression that a nit is one who is very 'nit-picky' at the table. One who constantly makes it a point to explain the rules to everyone at the table. One who freaks out when there is an open seat at his table and demands the floor fill it immediately. Silly things like that.
When did playing tight adapt this term? Most nits play extremely tight but not all extremely tight players are nits. Am I wrong? |
Re: Things NITS do...
Yeah, you're wrong. A nit is someone who wont lag it up. He plays predictably and safely.
I think he will over estimate his opponents hands. He only plays his own cards, rarely bluffs and hates variance. Also, he is more likely to slow down on the turn and, as said before, wont value bet enough, esp last on the river. |

Nit is the prime part of 'nit-pick'. [ QUOTE ] Most nits play extremely tight but not all extremely tight players are nits. Am I wrong? [/ QUOTE ] Pretty much. Some loose players are nits too. The only good part of their game is the fact they know the rules. b |

its better to be a nit than a station

Re: Things NITS do...
If you are playing one table, I find it hard not to be able to play close to optimally. Talk to any internet player and they are playing 4-6 tables optimally. If you are nitty, just stop sucking and learn how to play.

Re: Things NITS do...
Here are some things nits do:
- Complain about open seats after the floor has already been called. - Ask for new deck setups when there is no evidence of marks on the cards - Complain about ratholing in a limit game - When the first arrive at the table, sit out the blinds and post immediately after the button has passed them - Change seats at a table more than once - Complain about table talk that is neither collusive nor reveals private information - Sit out entire downs just to earn a comp dollar - Tip dealers or waitress with loose change - Immediately get up from the table if it falls to a certain number of players - Stare at their hand for a long time before tabling or mucking at showdown - Ask a dealer to break down down/color up chips at inconvenient times - Call for a misdeal after an inconsequential dealer error These types of players also tend to play tight, but it is the above behavior that makes them nits, not the fact that they play tight. |
Re: Things NITS do...
Good post, Nick.
"Nit" to me refers to miserable behavior, not playing style, but you definately could generalize and say many nits tend to play in a tight somewhat passive manner, and are regulars to the cardroom as opposed to the loose recreational players. |
Re: Things NITS do...
Of these, I change seats frequently, generally moving left, keeping newly vacated seats and laggy players to my right, as appropriate.
Relative table position cannot be underestimated in importance. AB |
Re: Things NITS do...
I'd posit that actually being called a nit by someone in an online NL game might mean that you are doing something right.

[/ QUOTE ] Good post! Also: -invoke "i want to see what you have" at showdown, esp. when not in hand -keep track of missed blind buttons of other players for dealer -not always, but often they will critisize others play: How can you raise with AK preflop? It is a drawing hand. -try to get others to turn over cards first at showdown -knows how to get free parking, where the 2-1 coupons are, etc. (this can be quite handy if you need to know) -will complain about a bad beat from years ago that was "similar" to the last hand |

Can we construct a list here of the top ten things NITS do? [/ QUOTE ] Here's the top 10 things they do at my casino 1. IWTSTH 2. Engage in lengthy and heated debate with the dealer/floor over who is entitled to the first (or second!) seat change button. 3. Ask the dealer to square up the table when its already fine. 4. Criticize/coach new or recreational players who are just there to have a good time. This is almost always done with incorrect, ridiculous advice. 5. Monitor how long anyone has been away from the table, its always, "over an hour he should be picked up." 6. Charge up to the podium and interrupt whatever is going on if they think they were next for the must-move game, but were not called for the must-move game. 7. Go 100% beserko if a new player cashes out $$ when moving to a new table. We all know you can't do this, but it seems to drive a nit into a red-faced stammering tantrum. 8. Make a huge deal over the slightest dealer/player mistake, and keep talking about it for 15-20 minutes even though no one is remotely interested. 9. Bore the table with bad luck/bad beat stories. 10. Annoy the sh*t out of me. |

Or perhaps to whether there's some beanpole at your table with his elbows out like he's rebounding a basketball. |

im called a nit for having a 14% VPIP at NL 6max. I never do any of the above.

Re: Things NITS do...
Nits:
1. call with a PP if oop, raises AA or KK if first to act, although may LRR to be tricky. 2. limps AK UTG PF. 3. slowplays a set. 4. Open shoves with the nutz. 5. Weak bet/shoves with the nutz 6. open completes the sb then folds to a raise. Does this for an hour before finally realising it is easier to just fold. |

These are all types of play of various skill levels. The actual poker actions have nothing to do with being a nit. It is what they say and do at the table that makes one a nit. Slowplaying a set has nothing to do with being nitty. Berating someone after the hand for slowplaying a set is very nitty. In fact, me correcting you for having the incorrect definition of being a nit makes me a nit. |
Re: Things NITS do...
there is a difference b/t life nits and poker nits.
i call people nits for stopping at yellow lights, basically nit means reserved. In poker to me it is another classification of a player as in Tight, Loose. Nit is someone tighter than Tight(get it hehe) Post flop you could apply it if you really wanted but i personally just stick with the aggressive or passive. |

Re: Things NITS do...
Sometimes the same word can have different connotations. Here are my definitions:
NIT 1. A person who exhibits a pattern of miserable/complaining behavior in a poker room. 2. A regular poker player who has an extremely weak-tight playing style. In either case I love taking money from nits. |
