Well, mostly it was because I was fresh off of seeing Brokeback Mountain and had never seen him as evil, in like, anything. Just had never really been impressed with him.

I would trust Christopher Nolan with any casting decision though, as he's my favorite director. At first glance, I was like WTF because of my predisposed thoughts of the joker.

This will obviously be a darker version of the joker.

I hope you're not hating on Nicholson's portrayal of the joker, which I thought was great. The tone of the Batman comic series and its characters has varied constantly since its creation. I don't think a darker version of the Joker is necessarily more correct than Nicholson's portrayal. I really liked Burton's first Batman, though I thought the 3 Batmans after that were terrible. Christian Bale's portrayal was a little too dark for my tastes, but I'm still open minded about the subsequent movies.

My favorite depiction of Batman is actually the 1990s cartoon series. I think that series found the happiest medium between darkness and campiness.

This is gonna rule so hard. Joker is an absolutely sick murderer. The Nicholson version was too big on appearances, and gags. Like if he was gonna kill you, he needed to make a joke out of it and do it with a special toy. I can picture Ledger's joker just going to town on someone with a big knife, and chuckling under his breath.

Yea, it kind of does.

I love the casting decision and think the picture looks dark, creepy and fantastic. I agree w/ the comment that comparing this Joker could be like comparing apples and oranges, similar to how Batman Begins had a much different feel to it than Batman.

I think by the end of this movie the only people that are going to be bitter with Ledger being the Joker are the ladies, yet another movie in which he isn't the male heartthrob, not exactly a swooning type picture in the OP.

Guys, no one is going to slip into your memories and eat Jack Nicholson.

I love the Tim Burton Batmans, but I'm really looking forward to a Joker that's not scored by Prince and dressed by MC hammer.

The Prince stuff was a resoundingly flat part of that movie. It really sucked a lot of the life out of it.

Nicholson's performance was top notch. I look forward to another take on it, but as someone said, you can't compare apples to oranges. Someone may give a virtuoso performance, but that won't necessarily make it any better than Nicholson's.

That series was so awesome. Remember the episode where the clock king got a hold of those time displacement devices, and went around stealing [censored], so batman and robin got there own time displacers, and ruined his [censored]? That was awesome. Or the one where the huge computer started making robot copies of all the politicians in town? Or the one where bruce wayne gets amnesia, and ends up in a forced sweatshop camp in the desert, then finally remembers he's batman, and starts kicking ass? Lots of fond memories there.

this movie should rock if it is anything like Begins. The roles played by jack and ledger likely will not be comparable if this joker is indeed super dark. I don't think ledger will touch jack in acting.

I'm SRSLY busting a nut over here. Finally we'll get a true Joker in live action. I'm also happy about the way they're marketing it. Last time around, they had a bunch of crappy commercials that took the one liners out of context in order to make the movie look "fun." This time around, they're promoting it extremely early and in a mysterious manner. The joker response to Harvey's campaign (ie "ibelieveintharveydenttoo" adds a bit of creepiness and foreshadowing.

That cartoon series really is great. It's one of my favorite cartoons of all time. The movies should be just like that.
