i just broke the PC card slot on my laptop. having previously broken the internal wireless card, i now have no way to access the internet from it. so i just ordered a new one to get me through the next few months.

on another note, i should probably stop playing the stars 320, because it's costing me a lot in computer equipment.

no link, its acer travelmate, very old for a laptop, i paid straight cash, it was new in box, it's weak but it does everything i want (play poker, browse internet/email, stay on aim/msn, microphone for chatting), also it can play decent games like starcraft which is a bonus

I have this exact laptop. I didn't read all your options so no idea how they differ. It's a good laptop, but it's really, really big and bulky, so if you travel a lot I would ditch it in favor of something more manageable. In this day of resizeable tables the humongous screen is pretty unnecessary, particularly given you can plug in your second monitor when at home. I actually thought about selling mine because I do travel quite a bit but I will probably keep it for now to avoid the hassle.

I have a 17" screen too and I love it, I really don't find it to be that inconvenient at all when travelling. Too lazy to looks specifically at everything but 4K+ is a lot of money, you must have upgraded a ton of stuff that you just won't ever notice/need.

I traveled a good amount with this one, and it was totally fine.

I had a 19" compaq previously (1920x1200 max-res) but last year bought a MacBook for travel purposes. Honestly if you're spending a lot of money on a laptop I'd recommend the most pimped out MacBook Pro you can get. It'll cost a lot less than the one you configured at Dell and it'll be a helluva lot better.

Well I guess it's all a matter of how much you travel, how you travel, and how much you use it in other portable ways. No question that a heavy clunker with a big screen is the best way to go if your primary usage is far and away at a desk. But, for example, it's very, very difficult to use on a plane. The only reason I went huge was for multi-tabling, but now that I can resize on Stars and Tilt it really isn't necessary.

Anyway, it's all a tradeoff. Because I am constantly taking mine everywhere, I'd much rather have a 4 lb smaller one then this 50 lb giant.

Yeah and a nice MacBook Pro is still quite portable (muuuuuch moreso than Dells), it's got 17" for 1680x1050 (good enough for 9 tabling at least IMO, I've played more on less before), it's slick as [censored], etc. etc.

Laptops go to Dell to die, and then Dell sends them back out to their customers to die

I just got a 17" as well and if I had to choose again I'd get a 17". Definitely think you overpaid for that though. Looks like you got 2gig processor with 2 gigs of RAM and 260GB hard drive which is plenty for whatever you want to do. Can't imagine you'd ever fill that unless you have tons of music/movies. 1.6gig processor with 2gigs of RAM and 160GB hard drive, it was $1400 Canadian. You can definitely get one with the same specs for a lot cheaper than what you paid. Also, I'm not a fan of Dell laptops but that's just me.

DEAR GOD NO

I got one of these puppies for 2200 and received an astounding 47 min battery life, thus making it my most expensive paperweight.

I work tech support at my college and we use almost all dells. We got in new laptops (about 2k but we get discounts etc) with the care 2 duo, 2 gig ram, 15 in screen, very nice. bought the extended battery and its almost 3.5-4 hours of life with constant use. Wish i had one of those [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

Been a tech geek for 15 years and switched from Wintel to Apple about a year ago. Parallels runs the few programs that are not available on OS X (PokerStars). No viruses, no spyware, no rebooting every other day (I honestly cant remember the last time I had to reboot).

Remember about a month after you got your high speed Internet (DSL/Cable/T1) and you said 'God, I'll never go back to dial-up'? Well after a month with OS X you will wonder how you lived without it for so long.
