In the genre of strategy books, the Harrington/Robertie series is an easy vote. The quality of the writing in terms of clarity, organization, flow, humor and the basic communication of an idea is extraordinary. I sense that Bill Robertie doesn't get anywhere near the acknowledgment he should for his contribution to poker.

In terms of prose, John Updike and Herbert Yardley come to mind though that vote is influenced by their non-poker works.

John Updike ?

Updike had a short story called "Poker Night" that painted a vivd picture of the traditional home game and its place in a grown man's social universe. The story deals with age, mortality, and the familiar rhythms of urban/suburban mainstream life.

Best of all, the story is absent of the obligatory strained anguish when a straight flush loses to a royal flush and someone loses their life savings that is such a common feature of old poker prose.

.....

David Hayano deserves his own category as well. His "Poker Faces" is a great read, especially for anyone who has spent a lot of time in card rooms.

No poker theorist writes as well as John Vorhaus, though there are many interesting books and subjects covered by the other theorists but in terms of pure literary style it has to be Vorhaus.
