A9s utg....play along please! what it do

live 7.50/15. i was on the tail end of a 10 hour session so i was real tired at this point, so please forgive me if the details are wrong....but lets play along eh?

game conditions: table is loose and passive as usual for this game. you are up like 6 racks and people might be gunning for you. your preflop raises arent getting too much respect (cause after all you're a LAG ) but no one seems to be 3 betting you, cuz maybe they fear your stack or somethin' (LOL).

so you get A9s utg. lets say folding is out of the question (cause then the play along would suck) so do we raise or call?

I think that in a game like this you should just limp. ATs is a raise.

If I am staying I limp, if it is the last hand, I raise. I love to be loosey goosey on the last hand of a session.

I don't because a) it's all one long session and b) I love money.

Just limp, you don't mind calling a raise from someone else.

Alright, in the actual game I went with the consensus here and I limped as well. Before I continue with the play along, I was wondering, is there any justification to raise PF with this hand? Is ATs really that much better than A9s?

ATs is quite a bit better than A9s. You can make a straight using both cards.

you've gotta draw the line somewhere. honestly, sometimes i would limp ATs and sometimes i would raise A9s. i hate thinking in terms of "rules" when it comes to preflop actions. i like to play according to the situation. in this spot i would limp A9s.

alright...so you limp A9s utg...sounds good.

predictably, 5 people limp along after you, the blinds check.

Flop comes a rather interesting AcQcQs. blinds check to you and....

EDIT: our hand is the Ad9d

Ugh. I'm so worried we're gonna be dominated or crushed, I feel like checking and seeing what happens behind us.

Bet. I don't think any gutshot is going to fold, and there's a very strong chance you have the best Ace, and a pretty good chance you have the best hand.

Re: A9s utg....play along please! what it do

I understand checking here also, because we want to play Ad9d and see a red flop rather than a black one... and the QQ should chill the action. But certainly I see that betting early might clear out at least half the competition and give our A a chance to hold up. Might this be one of those situations where we want to bet to "see where we're at?"

Re: A9s utg....play along please! what it do

This is an easy bet. There may be a queen out there as well as a better ace but your hand can also be best here often enough to make a bet correct. What to do after this may be more difficult.

Re: A9s utg....play along please! what it do

alright...i bet as suggested. this seems like a rather obvious play to me...theres a good chance we have the best hand here, esp with no raise preflop. somewhat surprisingly, though all but one limper calls! the blinds fold. 5 (including me) to the turn.

turn is a brick (3s). our action?

i'm a n00bie here, but are we not worried about someone holding a Q here?

I'd check and fold to the three Queens.

Me noobie too. But if I understand correctly, there is about 35% chance of a Q in the other 10 cards (1-(1-2/47)^10)). Then for every $1 you bet you are collecting $0.65 from each caller and paying out $0.35 to the pot, on average. This is very simplified, ignoring other possibilities (e.g., AA, flush, etc).

Re: A9s utg....play along please! what it do

Chino,

I like your play up until the turn. My first inclination is to fire again and fold to a raise, since a free card could be potentially disasterous. Also, in live play, if someone pops the turn, I think it's a Q something like ~100% of the time. However, if you check and one person bets, one calls and the action's on you, you're left with a legitmately tough decision. On the other hand, if you bet and then get raised, I think you can easily muck it assuming the players in question have no tricky to them (which is probably the case given the pink game.)
